The shortest way I can put it: The engine came through the portal, opening a pocket dimension. Pocket dimensions usually collapse naturally, but this one is corrupted. All the coincidences are guiding forces for Donnie, as he is the only one who can close the pocket dimension before it collapses and the world ends. He follows the engine back in time through the portal and chooses to die to save everyone. There's a lot more to it.
