Every time someone still says ferengiS, I die a little bit inside

Nog is the best

Harmony through Time Mighty Mouse

Late comment, but the quibble with the phaser is easy to explain. It must have been fired at the lowest possible setting, and we know that a phaser set to stun only renders a humanoid unconscious without injuring them, and some humanoids are resistant to the stun setting. Furthermore, it's not a stretch that to surmise that since changelings can reproduce many different surfaces and objects which have the various properties such as different degrees of hardness, they can take a form which is tolerant to phaser fire on the lowest setting. Their biology remains rather mysterious and all of their properties aren't established on-screen, and again we know that humanoids can be unharmed by a stun setting.

David Wehde

I’m glad I’m not the only one who couldn’t finish the episode. I listen to the podcast when I’m running I had to turn it off after about an hour as the nit-picking was too much for me.

Nicholas Daniels

Yeah I didn't mind the quibbles much this time because the B plot of this episode deserves to be criticised but this one, and a few others, was weird to me as well.

Andrew McKinley

Yes, you can enlist. O'Brien didn't attend the academy and doesn't fit under the same rank system as the officers. He mentions in a later episode that when Nog graduates he'll have to call him sir. It's not something they've really explained that well though. I guess Nog could view joining the academy as the true starfleet experience or perhaps non Federation citizens can't enlist.

Andrew McKinley

It is utterly horrific. I don't know how Nana just kept on functioning so she could go to work and be Kira. I have so much respect for her in the way she dealt with her trauma and the ways she shares her experience to help others who have endured traumas in their lives. Check out her "Mama Nana" posts. She is always inspiring!

Jim-Rhonda Lancaster

Wow thank you for sharing this - just listened to that podcast episode. Holy moly, how horrific. Wish they’d tie these pieces together on the show.

Victoria Mitchell

The way Garrett, Robbie and Armin talk about Kira/Bareil is the way I feel about Kira/Odo

Victoria Silas

Armin’s quibble about life signs—he must have forgotten that later in the series we know that changelings can mask their life signs because blood screenings become necessary to prove someone isn’t a changeling.

Victoria Silas

It’s my understanding that they can’t just enlist. They can be given a field commission and and then do the Academy or go right into the academy once accepted.

sgtb99

Maybe a silly question, but does everyone who joins Star Fleet have to go to the academy? Or only if you want to be an officer? Nog said he just wanted to join. Couldn't he 'enlist?'

Sherri Benner

The quibbles were too much in this episode. After an hour i had to turn it off because the complaining was too much and I couldn’t enjoy it. I came back a few days later but i hope they don’t continue nitpicking this much in future episodes.

Ingrid

The founder changeling lady is a real piece of work

Robert Allen Stiffler

Armin’s lessons are spot on! Research backs his first lesson. That’s why certain forces want us all to hate each other. Totally disagree with the rating. Nog could do anything he wants to do. No mockery.

sgtb99

Rom is an amazing father.

sgtb99

I respectfully disagree that nothing moves forward in terms of the arc of Odo and Kira. The audience gets to see how absolutely terrified Odo is about his feelings for Kira. So terrified that he denies it in his own mind. It may not be quantum leaps forward, but it is moving forward and he realizes how scared he is of his feelings for Kira. That’s called character development.

sgtb99

The founder is a bigot. Why is that hard to believe? Humans do that all the time, right? How unfortunate. The writers are on the money.

sgtb99

Exactly! I hope your year is going well. March is almost upon us and for some it's called March for a reason! I am plugging away.

Mike Khorshidianzadeh

With all due respect, when Sisko shakes Nog, that scene was so unexpected and powerful. It brought a depth to Nog that we have not yet seen. Avery is a brilliant actor and Aaron kept right with him…amazing.

sgtb99

I agree…I have to keep reminding myself the guys are not fans. They’re doing an analysis from their point of view as actors directors, etc.. and that’s fine.

I am also a high school teacher and I see this with adolescents. At some point, they will pivot and understand the seriousness of what’s before them and this is the episode when Nog makes that pivot. It’s actually a very wonderful thing to see if it happens during the school year. Sometimes it happens over the summer and the student comes back and they’ve made the pivot. It’s wonderful to see.

sgtb99

Yes, I was thinking the same thing. I have a hard time watching this episode knowing what she went through right before. Of course her performance is off. For anyone unaware, she tells the story on Gates McFadden's podcast, first episode of two here: [Gates McFadden Investigates: Who do you think you are?] Episode 106: Nana Visitor Pt.1 🅴 #gatesMcfaddenInvestigatesWhoDoYouThinkYouAre https://podcastaddict.com/gates-mcfadden-investigates-who-do-you-think-you-are/episode/124490883 via @PodcastAddict

Jennifer Gruenke

I'm about halfway through, but it seems like the guys were all unaware of Nana's extremely traumatic personal circumstances, which played a big part in the emotions she displayed while trapped in the crystal. There were real personal reasons for the tears.

Jim-Rhonda Lancaster

The phaser has to be part of the changeling come on guys!

sgtb99

You do see the back when Odo is speaking from behind her.

sgtb99

I like Kira/Odo because they have the same personality types as my parents (ISFP and ISTJ), suffice it to say they're opposites. I'm the same type as Nog (ESTJ) so I resonate with his character, he's at his worst until he has something to work towards in life and then he does a 180.

Sarah Berkner

"Sometimes a Great Notion" was filmed here on the Oregon Coast, in Lincoln County. The original Stamper home - which at the time of filming was basically a giant empty prop - is now a rental. So, for you or any of your listeners who would like to go relive that film, they can! https://sometimes-a-great-notion-kernville.booked.net/#w

Bethany Grace Howe

Here the "everyone but Kira knows Odo is in love with her" is heading towards the absurd. We've now learnt that Lwaxana knows and the Dominion knows, and in a few episodes we find out that even the ROMULANS know! If they know, the entire galaxy except Kira must be aware of it.

Elias Nordling

As a HS teacher I have been where Sisko was with Nog several times when I've had students ask for a letter of recommendation. I've never grabbed student but I get why Sisko did. He knows Nog will face a lot of prejudice and he will have to be able to withstand that, even from people he may come to admire or respect. He needs to be able to stand up for himself and push back. It's a powerful scene.

Mike Khorshidianzadeh

I love Odo but that story in this episode was entirely forgettable. The Nog plotline though is perfection.

Brendon

The high fan score reminds me that it seems most DS9 fans like Odo/Kira a lot more than I do, which is "not at all, worst part of the show."

Gary Alexander

Does this episode have the lowest ratings they have ever had? Lower than Move Along Home?
