Comments

I would totally watch that!

Barbara

Oh I get that. I wasn't lobbing a criticism. I love the podcast. I just thought it would be fun. Lol.

Kevin Greene

As I typed that I did wonder how many other countries had kept the correct spelling, I always liked Aussies! 😂

Catherine Green

Absolutely great points! The Picard torture really does set the tone for a lot of our understanding of Cardassians, so its really interesting seeing their perspective on Cardassian society and characters without that context. (And haha, Aussie actually, but objectively the correct way to spell it 😉)

Ria

Also, I always thought Riker's interaction with O'Brien was a cover to not interact with him because he knew of everyone on the station, O'Brien could have realized he wasn't Will and it would have thwarted his plan.

Alicia Stolp

I can buy that Kira would know who Riker is. Picard and the Enterprise were in the first episode, establishing Sisko as the commander of the station. Surely Riker would have been present for that and we know Kira was already on the station. Seems like she and Odo would have looked at a ships manifest to see who was docking at the station. His name would have been second on the list.

Alicia Stolp

Good point! And they’ve mentioned labour camps before in other episodes I think. (When is “labour camp” ever a good thing in TV or real life?) I do think the Picard torture scenes make the idea of it that much worse though. (Oh and hi fellow Brit, I just realised we’re both spelling labour with a u 👋)

Catherine Green

I love the crossovers. Although it may not have "fit', if it wasn't for Q-less I would have never started DS9. The premise of the show never really stuck with me.. And yes when Armin just hates on all things not DS9 it's annoying for me. But DS9 is my least favorite 90s, 2000's Star Trek, so that may have something to do with it. 🤣

Svpike

Yeah it bothers me that everyone thinks Kira should be punished - she thought she was giving a tour to Will Riker, XO of the Enterprise. She *did* make him go through the security check to get onto the Defiant! If anything its Starfleet that was lax in not flagging the existence of both Rikers and developing extra security measures specifically for them.

Ria

We also saw a Cardassian labour camp with Li Nalas and the other Bajoran prisoners in The Homecoming in season 2, so we know that they're brutal places! Of course Kira doesn't want Tom Riker - or anyone! - to be stuck in one for the rest of their lives.

Ria

I think they'd be very surprised by the actual show, given their impressions of it.

Ria

Yeah I thought the same, it's not confirmed one way or the other whether it was manned. It could well have been a space station of some kind, but given they give those proper names (Terok Nor, Empok Nor) that doesn't seem likely. It definitely doesn't sound like it was a settlement - surely Dukat would have been made a bigger deal if they'd killed hundreds or thousands of Cardassians.

Ria

The DS9 Tribble episode and Those Old Scientists (SNW and LD) are the best crossover episodes. I also liked Barclay being on Voyager.

Sarah Berkner

New Ensign here! "Cupid Detective" is too funny.

Sarah Berkner

I don't mind him, I just don't "ship" him and Kira.

Sarah Berkner

Unpopular opinion: the cardassian outpost 47 may not have even been staffed… armin kept referring to it as a settlement, but I always thought of it as a remotely controlled military outpost. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it was never mentioned that anyone died.

Veronica

I know it was a casual comment, but I would love for the Delta Flyers to recap TNG and Enterprise one day! The first golden age of Trek. 🩵

Anita DiCastri

Ohhhh, Fascination next...I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess that Robbie is gonna haaaaaaaate that one. Side note: I don't quite get all the hate for Bareil, though. Women at Warp don't like him either. Sure, he's not very exciting, but he's very nice. What's wrong with nice?

Elisabeth Westner

I agee with this too! Why the romance?? Because, that's why.

Elisabeth Westner

I’m about halfway through the podcast and Armin does seem extra nitpicky on this edition. “Defiant” is easily one of my favorite Seasons 1-3 episodes. Armin plays my favorite character on DS9 but he does take pride in his cast and crew and it seems like when TNG characters pop up he is protective of his show. Q didn’t fit in on the crossover episode but I felt that Thomas Riker was perfect for DS9. I get it though DS9 always was being compared to TNG when it was on the air.

BallparkDude

I agree, I do want to hear their thoughts. My issue is that when it becomes about criticism just for criticisms sake, it gets grating and tiresome. I love science fiction. If I did not suspend my disbelief, I would not care for it as a genre. I also love Star Trek and find it difficult to listen to the speculation that’s involved in what’s happening. I did not think the point of this is to continuously poke holes (pun intended).

sgtb99

I read that and it was great to read about the early days of the Federation taking over Terrok Nor -DS9!

sgtb99

I also love crossovers! These folks exist in the same universe, it makes sense that they might interact occasionally. To me it feels really fun. Like Harry Kim on Lower Decks, yay!! The only time I did not care for it was the finale of Enterprise, but that's another story of course.

Marcy Beard

This is a good point. I can definitely see Kira not wishing a Cardassian prison camp upon anyone given her knowledge of how Tom will be treated. I still think she should have kicked him in the balls after he forced that very 90s nonconsensual kiss upon her. Even without the destruction of the outpost, it’s hard to buy she would be over his manipulation of her.

Andrew Cano

I agreed with Armin about Q-Less because Q just didn’t “feel” like he belonged in DS9. However, I completely agree with you here because crossovers just make sense in Star Trek. On TNG, for example, Bashir’s presence in “Birthright, Part 1” worked very well. On a related note, crossovers are common in Star Trek novels and it’s great to see beloved characters from different shows interact. For a good TNG/DS9(ish) one, check out “Pliable Truths” by Dayton Ward.

Andrew Cano

I really don't mind the criticism, I want to know what our hosts and guests think!!!

Marian Bieniek

Crossovers are wonderful! I really enjoy those episodes. It brings a coherency to the Star Trek universe.

sgtb99

Seven was in all 3 seasons of Picard. Seven and Picard have the commonality of being reclaimed humans from the Borg before that was a thing.

sgtb99

Nana’s book is excellent!

sgtb99

I think the kiss was very 1990’s where everything male/female has to have a romance angle. We are thankfully somewhat past that but it does still exist, though not as ubiquitously.

sgtb99

I agree. Watching this as a child I idolised the independence of Kira. Seeing her go gooey over a terrorist who betrayed her felt off. The kiss at the end before he was beamed away was way over the top.

Veronica

The Obsidian order does not want the Cardassian military to know their secrets so in keeping with the wild speculation, I will wildly speculate that the Obsidian order can disrupt or jam or even better project nothing into the Cardassian sensor logs so the Cardassians cannot pick them up. I will say that with wild speculation authority.

sgtb99

Kevin, thank you for your suggestion. However we will not be doing any TNG episodes at this time. If we decide to do another series it would be with careful planning, with members of that cast, and after they finish DS9. We understand that our hosts lack of knowledge of TNG or Original Series is frustrating for some, but our podcast is not meant to be review based on anything but their behind the scenes experience of the show and knowledge of the industry. Not every viewer or even every Trek fan has seen every series and we do not see it as crucial to our goals with this podcast that our hosts be briefed on canon. Even if they were to have seen every episode of Trek in order beforehand, they likely would not remember most of the canon that people want them to which would bring a different set of criticism. Our hosts rarely remember episodes that took place in their own series. This podcast is meant to provide a perspective that you can't get elsewhere.

Garrett

We could all write our 15 favorite TNG episodes and rank them 1-15. Since we all would start to vary wildly no doubt after #5 we could easily get 40-50 top episodes out of it. Somebody would have to compile and count the votes to get to #1 voted and #2 voted and so on. (not sure who that would be. lol.) For the purposes of this all two parters would be counted as one episode. Could be fun.

Kevin Greene

Posted this for Civil Defense but since Frakes was on this one and Robby joked that they should do TNG next I'm posting again: I have a suggestion. Garrett and Robby have almost no knowledge of TNG. How about a segment called Next Gen Gems where Garrett, Robby, Armin and Terry watch 50 (or maybe 25) of the best TNG episodes (as voted on by the listeners) and do the recap and review. That would add even more episodes to the podcast and they can either do it at the end of the DS9 run or intersperse them as we move forward. If it's 50 eps that adds a year to the lifespan. I think that could be fun and they can see where a lot of the themes that DS9 and Voyager had originated. Thoughts?

Kevin Greene

I feel the same. Discuss the flaws. But it’s been quite constant recently and it turns me off. The “constant” specifically, is what I mean. Agree above, a lot of it has an explanation in cannon. Love the Podcast but it’s getting hard for me to look forward to it.

Brian Grubb

My gosh, the constant nitpicking over the past few episodes is becoming un enjoyable.

Brian Grubb

The Virginia-North Carolina connection is real. My mother was from Virginia and my dad was from North Carolina.

Kevin Greene

I agree with the person who wrote in to ask if they were glad it wasn’t Will Riker kissing Kira. I was disappointed at the time that there had to be a romance at all. Kira was a massive step forward in female representation on Trek and I didn’t want to see her immediately swooning over Riker, the ladies man of TNG. It felt like a step backwards. I hadn’t thought about how it makes it slightly more palatable that it’s Tom. He doesn’t have the same reputation, though he was swearing undying love to Troi the last time we saw him!

Catherine Green

Haha lucky for everyone that they spelled it differently- lawsuit averted!

Catherine Green

It’s obvious to anyone who’s watched TNG. People who haven’t seen Riker & O’Brien interacting before might not pick up on it. I loved the missing scene suggestion that had O’Brien realising something was wrong. It would have made so much sense and as O’Brien had the relationship with Will, it would have been good for him to play more of a part in the discovery. (I mean, he’d left the Enterprise before they found Tom but surely our transporter expert would have read up on that particular accident!)

Catherine Green

Agreed!

Brian Beirne

Thomas Riker hates the Cardassians and is dedicated to fighting them. Kira, who spent her life fighting and hating Cardassians would look to free him and be an ally of his.

Brian Beirne

I think at the time the episode was written it was inconceivable to the writers that anyone watching this episode would not have watched TNG. For a TNG watcher, Cardassian prison = Picard getting brutally tortured for 43 minutes, which is why we have the scene with Dukat promising that won’t happen to Riker. Even though “Labour camp” sounds bad, without the TNG context you might think, as the guys did, that it’s fair enough for Tom to be sent there to pay for his crime. A TNG watcher might be fine with him going to a Federation prison, but no-one deserves a Cardassian one. I think this is also why they spent no time explaining Will’s relationship with O’Brien - a TNG watcher would simply know something was off. It’s great that people are now coming to DS9 as an entity in its own right. It’s not a given these days that everyone has seen TNG first.

Catherine Green

I agree! They don’t know canon and really are not expected to be fans. Everything they have done in the franchise is appreciated and they are loved for their contributions. Pointing out some flaws and giving an expert point of view are fine and welcomed. The other stuff is very grating. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this. Other people feel this way who write comments in the video part as well.

sgtb99

I agree, some of the incessant nitpicking gets in the way of exploring the episode for me. Sometimes I feel the perception of a flaw comes from a lack of knowledge of the canon. That doesn’t make it invalid, but it makes it more grating to my ears.

Set Phasers To Malky

Everybody IS a hero on TNG!

sgtb99

Jonathan Frakes hosted a show called The Paranormal.

sgtb99

Of course Kira can rig replicator parts into a weapon! She was a terrorist!

sgtb99

So, Sisko has been on a Cardassian made station for 3 years…he can read some Cardassian. He also was probably responding to the visual of the ships positions.

sgtb99

I disagree that Sisko went to Cardassia rogue. No way.

sgtb99

Kira thought he was William Riker someone who is trustworthy.

sgtb99

I mean it seems kind of obvious that part of Kira's sympathy for Thomas Riker is that he was fighting Cardassians. She's hardly in a position to argue that blowing up their outposts is worthy of condemning him to one of their prisons. As the podcast points out, Kira criticizes him directly for not being ruthless *enough.*

Gary Alexander

It's in the feed now - hooray & thanks!

Sebastian Goettling

Robbie that show was called" Beyond belief fact or fiction".

Robert Allen Stiffler

I haven’t gotten it on Overcast.

Michelle Kruse

Thanks for asking my question! I remembered Armin expressing a sense of resentment during filming of Q-Less. Seems like that had dissipated a bit.

Andrew Cano

Thank you.

sgtb99

Thank you for the quick fix this morning!!

Marcy Beard

Super fast response! Thanks! And the episode just appeared! Talk about customer service! 🙂

Deborah Moltisanti

This is a Patreon issue and we have reached out to them about it to see if we can get it fixed.

Garrett

This is a Patreon issue and we have reached out to them about it to see if we can get it fixed.

Garrett

I would normally agree but I find a lot of charm in Armin’s nitpicking. It makes me think about some things differently without detracting from my enjoyment of what is, ultimately, escapist fun. Of course, that is just my subjective experience and I can completely understand how you and others think and feel differently.

Andrew Cano

Episode hasn’t dropped on Apple Podcasts?

Deborah Moltisanti

It depends. There's some great criticism sometimes, I thought Terry really hit the nail on the head with Meridian last week and how Dax and that guy never having more than surface conversation made the romance so unconvincing but sometimes they nitpick about stuff the average viewer would just fill in the blanks themselves or they've just misunderstood things.

Andrew McKinley

I mean surely that's blatantly obvious. How did they miss that.

Andrew McKinley

Same for me on Spotify. No sign of it

Andrew McKinley

Same on Overcast

Jeff Kloosterman

I agree…I used the word incessant, that’s what I am not a fan of and it’s ok for me to express that. Thank you.

sgtb99

The fact that they talk about the flaws is what makes this podcast good, if they didn't it would be boring. And it's especially useful to have people with much more insight than you or I talking about the flaws.

Theo Adams

Me too, must be an issue with the RSS feed

Theo Adams

Same here. Listened here instead.

Elias Nordling

But I am!

Elias Nordling

Exactly!

Brian Beirne

Same here (I'm using MusicBee). Nothing showing up this morning. Thank you for all you do!

Marcy Beard

Riker is XO of the flagship of the Federation. He is a rockstar!

sgtb99

NOT a fan of the incessant nitpicking.

sgtb99

Hey guys, maybe it's just my podcatcher (Pocket Casts), but the new show has not dropped in my RSS feed yet. Maybe some technical hiccup? Have a good Monday, all the best from Germany, heading out now for a snowy hike.

Sebastian Goettling

Dukat showed up really Quickly in Civil Defense too. I think he has his ship parked behind the nearest moon constantly looking out for opportunities to get DS9 back.

Elias Nordling

I thought Riker came on to O'Brien to cover up for the fact that he knew the real Riker and could easily have exposed him in a conversation. So he had to make sure that didn't happen and had probably thought it up beforehand.
