Ratings Robbie: 9.2. "I loved this episode." Both the others gasp at the high rating. "Every note was accenting the other notes. From direction to writing to lighting, all if it." Armin: 9.2. Armin had written down this rating without knowing Robbie's. Armin calls the episode "seamless." He also likes that it gives the Ferengis respect. Garrett: 8.1. He says this is upgraded from his original rating, influenced by the praise by Robbie and Armin. Patreon patrons/fans: 8.3. Garrett is bbacks the standout among the four hosts as closest in his taste or reaction to the episode as the fans. 1:28:50 -- 1:32:15

I definitely see your point, but the drama of it is that Keiko feels she has made this sacrifice for Miles and his career, and she is determined to keep it. It is Miles who has to absolve her of this promise. They could have had a scene where this was made more explicit but I thought it came through. Sure they could sit down and work out the future together like the mature couple they are, but I'm not sure you would get a good story arc out of it. Also, by having his family go away, it is now Miles who makes a sacrifice, so if that was the suggestion of Keiko, it would once again put Miles in focus. Well, it's Colm Meaney, I could easily see him play a scene where we expect him to be heartbroken but is instead overjoyed for his wife, so I guess it could have worked.

Elias Nordling

Couldn't agree more!

It’s a really good point, Keiko is the person with the problem to be solved but the focus is on Miles’ reaction and his solution (which he comes to with the help of another man). I’m sure the aim was to show a man recognising his wife’s career needs and valuing them (yay, how modern!) but the focus still has to be on him not her. Still, baby steps…

Catherine Green

That wasn’t on Quo’nos it was elsewhere

Rob King

You have a point but I think we still have to classify this episode as comedy or farce.

Yule Tide

This episode is one of my favourites, and I love that this podcast thinks that too. It's one of the rare occasions we get to see 'ferengi-ness' being a strength rather than a source of comedy - Quark's financial skills are his superpower here, and help to (finally!) earn him some respect.

Helen B

You are correct. They go back in the Season 5 opening episode “Apocalypse Rising”.

BallparkDude

Nope; it was aboard a Klingon space station.

Brendon

Maybe it's just me... and I do really appreciate Miles figuring out what Keiki needs to be happy... I just think it would have been nice if she had been involved in finding the solution. On one hand, it sounds like she would never consider leaving the station to work somewhere else (so he had to be the one to suggest it). On the other hand, does a person really need someone else to "fix everything" for them, without their agency? I'm probably being WAY too nit picky here, it just struck me a bit sideways. Otherwise, I really enjoyed the episode!

On the meaning/origin of the word "Quark" (Armin's etymology segment) and the name of the character. One of the Klingons, when meeting Quark in a formal srtting, hears Quark's name incorrectly and repeats it back as "Quirk." The Klingon has obvious disapproval that such an absurd character as this is somehow involved in Klingon politics, and seems unsurprised that the "ridiculous little man" would indeed have a matching name like "Quirk". Quark corrects this mistake politely and the Klingon gets it right the second time. But the message is given: It is perfectly plausible, in Klingon eyes, that a man like this WOULD be named "Quirk." The character Quark is often "comic relief" (and S3e3, House of Quark, is more than anything a comedy episode). I wonder if the name Quark was meant to be similar sounding enough to the word "quirk" to get the point of what this character is about, or was intended to be about. (The whole Quark/Quirk joke in this episode, though, is one of many many cases in the series where real questions are raised about how the "universal translator" works, exactly. It's an english pun, the scene is of a kind Shakespeare would insert in a comedy for similar purposes. But how would this subtle pun make it through the universal translator?)

Yule Tide

Armin said they didn't go back to Qo'noS until Enterprise episodes...I thought the epi where they thought Gowron was a changeling was on that planet. I could have heard wrong.

Phil Adams

Awesome episode!
