Live Drops

Hello all! As most of you probably noticed we have been experimenting with the new Live Drop option when posting the Podcast videos. This option gives you the ability to watch it at the same time and chat about it as you go. The one down side is that you can not skip ahead, but have to watch it as it's aired live. I believe you can go backwards to watch what you missed during a Live Drop.
After trying it out for a few weeks we wanted to do a poll to gauge how everyone is liking this new option. Please take the poll below and let us know how we should proceed!

Option 1: We'll keep doing the Live Drops just as we have been the last few weeks.

Option 2: We will go back to just posting the video as a regular post.

Option 3: Each week we will post the Live Drop early, so that it will be finished playing by the usual posting time at 9pm PT. So, those who want to watch and comment as a group can, and those who just want to watch it regularly can do so once the Live Drop has ended by the usual posting time. This would change the timing of the Live Drop, because most episodes average 2.5 hours, the Live Drop would likely usually begin around 6:30pm PT. If episodes are longer or shorter, the time will change so that all Live Drops are finished just before 9pm PT so that others can watch it without restrictions. Once the Live Drop has finished playing the entirety of the episode, the video essentially turns into a regular video post. However, it will remain at the top of the feed, saying "just dropped" for 24 hours.

Thank you all for your continued support of the podcast!!

We totally understand that this isn't an option for everyone based on time zones. And if we get enough interest in the live drops we would consider dropping them earlier in the day for some of the more popular episodes to try to accommodate the UK.

Garrett

Hi Peggy, as confirmed by many and tested by me, you can go backwards. The only restriction is that you can not go forward. Option 2 would leave no option for those who do like it and use it. Option 3 means that anyone, like yourself, could watch the video normally at the usual posting time of 9pm PT, while still letting others enjoy what the live drop brings.

Garrett

I like option 3, but it does seem like it maybe limiting comments as there’s so much less analysis.

SnazzyO

It's too late at night

David Canada

same..

Irene Artho

I wish I could join the live drops but I live in the UK and the new podcast always drops at 5am Monday morning. Good idea but just dropping the video works for me.

Stephanie Davies

I live on the east coast, so watching an episode live that begins at midnight isn't really an option when I have to go to work at 9am. If it started earlier, I'd be interested, but it just doesn't really work for anyone who isn't on the west coast otherwise.

Harpo1987

Option 2 please. The live drops are irritating because you can’t go back to the beginning if you miss the start until it has completed.

Peggy

Oh, if I could watch live (a bit late on a weeknight on the East coast) that would really bug me! (And kind of an odd technical limitation, since I *think* YouTube can cast/airplay lives that are actually live and not yet finalized video files, whereas the Patreon live is a finalized video from the get-go.)

Jenny

Yeah, I’m on the east coast, so the live drops aren’t an option for me (becomes a sort of sometimes possibility with #3) and it’s always been an ok, the podcast drops Sunday night for the west coast but effectively Monday evening for the east coast and Europe (on east) thing. But the live drops definitely ruined the existence of the comment section for those who aren’t live.

Jenny

I like option 3 the best. With it coming out at 11PM I will rarely be able to join in the live chat. Thank you for making this offer.

Chris Garis

Hi Nick, yes we have already reached out to our point of contact at Patreon and expressed this feedback in hopes that they can find a fix!

Garrett

It really doesn’t matter to me. I’m on the east coast and am asleep before it would finish most weeks, but who knows? I may have insomnia sometime. This would be fun. Why keep someone else from enjoying it if y’all are okay doing it?

Suzanne Hollifield Eller

Whatever the outcome of the vote, please forward our feedback about the email notifications on to Patreon. For a number of reasons, not all of your Patrons are able to take part in the Live Drops - eg: they take place in the middle of Monday afternoons here in NZ - and so it is frustrating to have to wade through multiple Live Drop-related email notifications each week. Currently the only way to opt out of the Live Drop emails is to unsubscribe from ALL of the Delta Flyers emails, and that's not a great outcome for the Patrons or the creators.

Nick Johnston

It also occurred to me that it sounds like extra work for the Delta Flyers to time the live drop to end at the same time each week. I appreciate all the effort that already goes into making and editing these reviews, so hopefully that doesn't cause too much hassle for you!

Trevor Yan

Option 3 sounds the best. Thanks for putting this question out to us! Once again the Delta Flyers is a class act, showing respect for their fans. :)

Alex Ray

I’m in the UK so even the earlier time is in the middle of the night for me. But if I don’t have to be up the next day I will definitely try to join! :D I’m glad you’ve been enjoying though! It’s such a good feature:D

Amy Tudor

They have been good fun, in my experience, albeit with a small group compared to the number of patrons of Delta Flyers. Hopefully the earlier time, which it sounds like they're implementing, will enable you to join the chat!

Trevor Yan

It sounds like they plan to move them up to an earlier time for East Coast patrons. Hopefully that enables you to join!

Trevor Yan

Live drops sound great! Wish I could join but unfortunately too late for me. I love the community sound of it and have done them for YouTube shows previously and they’re good fun!

Amy Tudor

Live drops sound great, but midnight on a Sunday night is really difficult on the US east coast. I would have a much better shot at participating with Option 3, but I resigned myself long ago to not being able to participate until Monday evening at the earliest.

Spencer Kormos

Well, you can still do that with the live drops. I'll usually watch the first hour or so on the live drop then watch the rest over the next day or two

Wrestling With Gaming

Thanks! So have you!

Wrestling With Gaming

You've been a great contributor to the chat on recent live drops, Wrestling With Gaming. Hope that the new time will get more community engagement, as you said!

Trevor Yan

I love the live drops, because they provide a sense of community, which I felt was lacking around the release of new episodes. While 6:30 or 7 pm does not work as well for me personally, it seems like most people (especially on EST in the U.S.) prefer the earlier time. I'm all for what works for the "needs of the many" to increase the number of people chatting about the episode! I'll hope to join for as much as I can, which will likely be for the Patreon content only around 8 pm PST.

Trevor Yan

I voted for 2 only because I watch the podcasts over the course of 2 days when I'm working.

Kathleen Scherrman

Option 3 is best of both worlds (cue Hannah Montana) 😘

Cheryl Palay

I am way behind, still working through Season 1. 🫣 But Option 3 sounds like to best to me.

Sara Stewart

I have nothing against the live drops. But I voted for option 2 because of the email notifications for them (there's no way to turn off notifications about the drops separately), and unfortunately a large number of the comments on the episode are now those made during the live drop. I like reading the comments to get others' perspectives, but now some of them have nothing to do with the episode ("hi everyone", etc.) Hopefully Patreon will improve this feature so that the live drop stuff (notifications and comments) are separated out from other stuff.

Sarah Ettritch

You can drag the episode back to the beginning from the live drop, but there is not an AirPlay option (I just used screen mirroring last night). Once the episode is complete, the AirPlay option returns. 🤷‍♂️. Option 3 sounds like the best of both worlds (🤣🤣🤣… pun intended).

Mike Fillmon

I love the added sense of community the live drops provide. Also, I’ve been able to watch the new episode on its own while the drop is happening, so it’s the best of both worlds. I think this is a great new addition :-).

James Morrow

Big fan of option 3

Martin D

I put option 3 as it currently starts 5:00am my time and I wake up at 6:00am so I have to go back to watch from the beginning for an hour before I pause it to go to work and watch the rest in my work breaks, and during that time when the live feed has finished I have to refresh to watch the rest as "just dropped".

bakura

We reached out to our point of contact with the feedback. Hopefully they can work on a fix for those who do not want the constant notifications!

Garrett

With issues like that it's usually the device or browser you're using. Try switching to a new browser and see if that helps. If not, reach out to Patreon support, they may be able to help you troubleshoot. https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

Garrett

Agreed, I had my settings changed for both email & app. Thank you for thinking of your fans nationwide. Cheers!

Cassandra Girard (عَلِمَ)

have had to switch to audio if I want to listen to episode

B obrien

My iPad just freezes with theses drops ,,no idea why

B obrien

Thanks a lot! Love the show regardless!

Jeremy Sessions

Got it, yeah we don't know of any way to just mute select types of notifications. But we can reach out to Patreon and let them know that there are those who would like the ability to turn off specific notifications, but not all. We can't promise they'll do anything about it, but they are usually very good about feedback and looking for ways to improve the experience.

Garrett

I get both, which is normally fine. I want the notifications when the videos drop, but there's no separate category in those settings to turn off the extra notifications I started getting with the live drops.

Jeremy Sessions

Are these notifications in your email or from the app? I believe you can go into your app or Patreon email settings and change how you are notified about new posts. https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002984566-Manage-my-email-notifications

Garrett

The Live Drops are great, love the interaction. Option 3 sounds the most sensible - and incidently allows me to join in if I catch a 5AM alarm to finish before my office grind starts (nothing wrong with a bit of selfishness ;-)

Richard Knijnenburg

The think that annoys me the most is all the extra notifications that come in counting down to the drop time. I haven't found any way to turn them off. But considering it happens at the same time every week, I don't really need or want all the extra reminders.

Jeremy Sessions

I LOVE the live drops. You can indeed rewind to catch anything you missed if you join them late. I think option 3 is the way to go. I live on the east coast so I can only stick around for about an hour of the live drop since it's so late in the est time zone. With option 3 the people that aren't into the live drops will still get the full show at the usual time and the earlier time will probably get more engagement in the live chat during the drops. Sounds like a win/win to me

Wrestling With Gaming

Option 3 sounds like the most sensible choice.
