2024-07-18 05:06:40 +0000 UTCI enjoyed the Delta Flyer's coverage of this episode! Having been a Trek fan a long time, I enjoy the connections between the series. I think some fans and members of the the cast of Enterprise didn't like the last episode with Troy and Riker in the last episode . In both instances, I understand how it irked some. Today, though, we're seeing all sorts of references to previous series in the new Star Trek shows, which I feel contributes to the sense of world building and pays homage to the previous iterations of the show.

2024-07-18 05:02:09 +0000 UTCDr. Richard Daystrom (played by Emmy Award Winning William Marshall, first appeared in the original TOS series. Clearly, a new institute was named after him at some point. So , it's not a clear TNG reference, but I feel can feel considered canon TOS as well.

2024-03-13 02:58:57 +0000 UTCI love All of the historical crossover between the shows. A daystrom institute was on tng , but it was actually named after the scientist from the original series. I think it's great, and it doesn't take away from this series at all to have all of this cross over.. It makes it feel more real as though it's part of an actual larger universe. For me anyways.

2024-01-20 23:47:08 +0000 UTCNever mind… It was bugging me so much that I had to go and check. I think my memory is confusing the “ manta ray” - like appearance of this light form with the “jellyfish “ -like appearance of that lifeform from the TNG episode… Damn marine-inspired alien shapes… 😂

2024-01-20 20:06:20 +0000 UTCI hope that in my review of all the comments that I didn’t miss somebody else already mentioning this… and I am trying to recall my thoughts from watching this episode many months ago, however, if I recall correctly, didn’t the life form/being that emerged from the crystal “egg “look like the miniature of the being from the pilot episode of TNG, that rose from the surface of the planet?? I believe the episode title was called Encounter at Farpoint… I apologize to possibly point out another TNG connection. It’s just a very vague memory and I really need to go back and rewatch it to see if I’m recalling it correctly. Lol.

2024-01-20 20:00:27 +0000 UTCI am reading Sir Patrick Stewart's book and he discusses the 3rd episode of TNG "The Naked Now" and how it was a riff on "The Naked Time" from the original series. It was quite a preposterous undertaking to have this be the episode after the premier of the series. However, I loved seeing Q and Vash on DS9 - I thought it was a great story!
Vicky Thompson
2024-01-20 19:38:02 +0000 UTCAnd according to memory alpha, the story pitch was just Vash. Then the writers figured well, if we’re doing Vash, that’s a credible way to get Q to show up, given they were last seen going off together. Then BOY did the writers lean into the characters they were already more familiar with, given barely any DS9 scripts had been written yet (and if they’d seen the actors creating the DS9 characters at all, Emissary was likely the only filmed episode at the time they’d have been doing this story and script).
Jenny
2024-01-20 15:03:31 +0000 UTCGenuine apologies to Armin! My question (about what it was like filming with de Lancie when filming DS9 was so new) was genuinely trying to get an Armin-question rather than de Lancie question in - there’s an old quote from a DS9 S1 companion about Armin enjoying watching de Lancie film with Avery I was thinking there might be an expansion on, but the quote was obviously from 25-30 years ago! As the hosts observed, the DS9 plot/character involvement was *so* limited; it was kind of a crappy episode, with Q’s sole appearance on the series being all that was really noteworthy. Odo’s great monologue and Quark being a joy to watch with the auction weren’t exactly good *question*-foddler! 🤷🏻♀️ Nor was the oo-mox. 😂 But definitely a shame if the actors were already feeling ratings pressure at the time of filming with the TNG guest characters - I’d assumed it was SUCH an early episode that it was filmed before anything else, except MAYBE the pilot, had even aired. (Hopefully take solace in how much vastly better DS9 is regarded than TNG in current decades! TNG holds a certain place for nostalgia, but a decent percentage of it was…not so good. And I’ve always found DS9 and Voyager’s clunkers to be vastly more watchable and enjoyable than TNG’s stinkers. 😳) The writers definitely focused more on the characters they already “knew” better from TNG (given there were only a handful of DS9 scripts at the time, and probably none that had aired yet to see with the actors creating the new characters). From some other quotes online, it sounds like they realized that error, focusing too heavily on the guest characters with whom they were more familiar rather than the new series’ characters, after the fact when seeing the completed episode.

2024-01-20 14:45:04 +0000 UTCI used to see this episode as more of a nod to TNG however looking deeper Q and Vash episodes were written by Ira Behr who is showrunner for DS9. So I see it more he brought his characters to cross over more compared to it being a TNG thing. Just caught this while watching the extra content on the end of Season 3 TNG boxed set.

2024-01-20 05:21:09 +0000 UTCI can imagine Q not coming back because he knew that the Commander was DONE - there would not be any baiting. It is interesting that Picard and Janeway did not have children at the time they encountered Q and Sisko was a single father of a teen boy - so when he was done, he was DONE, no arguments!

2024-01-20 00:30:34 +0000 UTCThe opening scene is the most unbelievable thing I've ever seen in Trek. Never have I ever impressed a love interest with a story about my pharmacy school exams and believe me, I tried!

2024-01-19 19:02:42 +0000 UTCWith this episode I struggle with Q’s story purpose. He doesn’t do anything. On Voyager we had Q dealing with a continuum member who wants to end his life, we had civil war in the continuum, and we had Q’s child. All of these were stories relating to Q and the nature of his being. I can’t relate him to this episode at all. It should have just been Vash and the story fleshed out in other ways.

2024-01-18 14:02:40 +0000 UTCI really like discovering DS9 through the eyes of Garrett, Robbie and Armin / Terry. I was one of the ones that gave DS9 almost no chance because of how they portrayed my favourite Captain Picard in the first episode. It does get better after a while though (especially once Worf joins them). For my personal taste it doesn't have enough science later on and it's mainly about the characters, but there are some very good stories. It's definitely still S1 at this point with DS9. I think all Star Trek series suffered in S1 (maybe SNW is an exception) and the characters were still finding themselves as well. One note about the Q - Vash relationship, it seems to me that it's a kind of abusive relationship or definitely very controlling. If it's romantic on top who knows, even worse if they were involved. He wants to control her, but she's strong enough to get him out of her life. Also because of this, I would definitely say Vash is the winner of this episode.

2024-01-17 19:10:58 +0000 UTCTo be fair, a lot of new Trek gets judged harshly when it first comes out - even TNG went through the same! Maybe it was worse with DS9.. not sure.

2024-01-17 05:39:02 +0000 UTCI wish I had a time machine so I could go back and contribute to the ratings for DS9. I didn't end up watching it until the early 2000s, but its been so dear to me ever since. I love all the Treks, but if I'm to be honest, DS9 is my absolute favorite. I actually love the fact that they are on a station. I know the complaint was that it wasn't a ship, but I think exploring another aspect of what it is to be in Starfleet was genius. The politics, the character development, and the blending of the bajoran military with Starfleet made it feel so full (in a good way.) I rewatch it every couple years and it never gets old. I appreciate Armin's comments on this episode. It's never been one of my favorites. It always felt odd and out of place when they mentioned TNG. I completely agree with his assessment. DS9 was a strong series right from the start. Aside from the traditional hand off in the pilot, I don't think it was necessary to refer back to TNG at all. It saddens me that DS9 was judged so harshly when it was airing. Everyone was doing an amazing job, and I wish they could have felt more appreciated during that time.
Jennifer
2024-01-17 02:46:45 +0000 UTCGarrett needs to write down the comment by Armin about Avery breaking Marc's nose in the final episode, so they can revisit it later. Or maybe Rebecca or Molly.

2024-01-16 21:39:25 +0000 UTCSo appreciate Armin’s candor and care. Doesn’t sound like there was enough appreciation at the time, so I hope that as this podcast experience plays out, he and Terri feel the love and appreciation for all their work on this show. TNG references got a lot of people in the door, but it was the exceptional work of the DS9 cast and crew that kept us here.
Constance
2024-01-16 19:58:50 +0000 UTCSo glad they highlighted O’Brien’s reaction to Bashir - I love it. He was convinced Bashir was bombing and then the girl was totally bought in - hilarious. You can see O’Brien mentally reviewing his bachelor days and thinking where does he find these ladies.

2024-01-16 19:49:10 +0000 UTCI really like Q, Vash and DS9 but, as a lot of folk have said, this episode is a bit off. It certainly has it's moments but as a whole, it didn't work. Not sure it's the number of references to TNG though - as someone has said, they inhabit they same universe at the same time, so there's bound to be some connections. Towards the end of the series, I'm surprised there weren't more. I never quite understood what was off about this, but I think Armin nailed it - DS9 was all about longer stories and consistency. This episode doesn't have any - it could have been set anywhere in the Star Trek universe, not just DS9. The conections, instead of being to other parts of DS9 (which is the case for most episodes and is one of the reasons I love the show) are to TNG. And that makes it just off.

2024-01-16 08:48:44 +0000 UTCAlthough the DS9 still shines in this episode due to their talent, I also think Armin is right. The episode is a bit insulting to the DS9 cast even though I did enjoy catching up with Vash and there were some fun scenes with Q, Quark, bashir, and Sisko. It's just like this episode was both not enough DS9 and not enough TNG. And I'm not saying I wanted it to be a TNG heavy episode, just that they couldn't make up their mind as to they wanted and didn't commit to either. Maybe Vash being there was the issue. Q interacting with Garak, Odo, Kira, Dax, etc could've been fun. Either way, I still find this an enjoyable episode but flawed episode. There's still some gold nuggets like Odo and Quark's scene. Thanks for another great episode to the hosts, Rebecca, and anyone else that helped!

2024-01-16 06:03:33 +0000 UTCIt’s a shared universe. TNG established it while DS9 expanded it. Maybe specific nods like Q and Vash are TNG nods but the rest they mention are just references to world they inhabit.
Chris
2024-01-16 03:42:55 +0000 UTCI actually liked the references to TNG.... I love it when shows that are supposed to exist in the same world actually show that they are in the same world. For the same reason I loved that Voyager had scenes in the pilot at DS9 and that the enterprise dropped off the Chief. It would have been odd to have had this story and not mentioned TNG. 🤷🏼♀️
Jennifer Barnett
2024-01-16 01:28:58 +0000 UTCI love this episode of DS9; and I believe that the reason that the powers that be used Q and Vash is also continuity. Star Trek, all the shows are supposedly the same universe and many Captains know each other. Star Fleet had meetings about how dangerous Q was. It was more of a continuation of a story. I don’t think it was meant to be a put down to DS9. Love the Podcast!

2024-01-16 00:00:39 +0000 UTCI don't know what RDM is talking about. The stories so far in DS9 have not "connected and build" so far than any other Star Trek show. Later in the series we will get very good story arches over many episodes and even seasons..but not yet. Maybe Sisko and Kira were there to meet the Runabout after it docked but then when the crew did not come out they figured out something was wrong and were trying to help. I think, as usual, the boys are way too sensitive about the issue de jure. For the most part, Star Trek fans LOVE easter egg comments and call backs (at least I do). The comment about the Daystrom Institute is not only a callback to TNG but to TOS as well do due to the founder, Richard Daystrom, being a character in the episode "The Ultimate Computer".

2024-01-15 20:15:03 +0000 UTCThere’s this compilation of Star Trek bloopers on youtube somewhere that includes a blooper of the fight scene between Q and Sisko that is HILARIOUS. I think of it every time I see that scene 😅

2024-01-15 18:11:04 +0000 UTCI agree we should have had a scene with Q and Garak, but it may have been far too much sass for us to deal with 😂

2024-01-15 17:33:21 +0000 UTCI feel like the assay office in the episode was meant to be the station equivalent of a Purser's Office on a ship. Not sure why they didn't just call it that.

2024-01-15 13:05:07 +0000 UTCLoved the ep this week - sometimes hearing the guys analyse why an episode didn't quite work is just as fun as hearing them discuss why it did haha! And for me this is definitely one of those middle of the road season 1 episodes where the show is trying to find its feet - though there are still some great bits, Bashir getting put to sleep by Q and reappearing at the very end always cracks me up. There was definitely a very deliberate trend in the first season to bring across TNG characters to try to get the audience invested - the Duras sisters, Q and Vash, and Lwaxana Troi (coming up) - which I think speaks to that lack of trust in the show and its new characters, which Robbie and Armin were discussing. As a fan I *loved* reminders of the shared universe between TNG, DS9 and Voyager, but I think the problem here is that the episode really centres around Q and Vash, not any of our main characters (yes Quark is involved, but it's not really *about* him). In my opinion those crossover / shared universe elements work a lot better when they're just a part of the fabric of the worldbuilding, as when we saw the Duras sisters earlier in Past Prologue, OR when it connects more heavily to one of our main characters, which in my opinion Lwaxana does when she appears later in the season. I think the focus on and continuation of TNG storylines in this episode is what (understandably!) rankles Armin. It's a very tricky balance to get right, to let a new spinoff stand on its own two feet while also letting it be part of the same universe as the shows that came before, and I personally think the show handles it a lot better after this episode.

2024-01-15 09:06:32 +0000 UTCthe best and most fascinating thing I find about Star Trek in general is the ability it has to change opinions and get over long held biases. For example, the in kirk era, Klingons = bad but then Worf changed that and I came to respect and like the Klingons. in TNG ferengi were portrayed as 'horrible little trolls' and DS9 changed that, in no small part to Armin's performance. Wonderful writing

2024-01-15 08:51:05 +0000 UTCJohn De Lancie as Q is a draw but unfortunately his episodes aren't always good. A character like that is so difficult to write. I do love seeing him get knocked down by Sisko, both for the satisfaction and for it showing who Sisko is vs Picard. Sorry Armin doesn't care for the TNG connections, at this distance I see this just as background but it was different at the time I guess.
