2024-03-22 06:05:31 +0000 UTCI really liked B’Elana seeing her life on Voyager from fresh eyes. I liked the ‘gang’ getting together based on the data they had and instinct. I think the Captain saying ‘no’ to a relationship with Jaffen due to protocol was completely wrong. He could have been a civilian advisor. Conflict resolved. No, a better reason would be 2 issues: 1) He really doesn’t know her - you cannot ignore how much being in Starfleet for life impacts your perspective and 2) she honestly should have said ‘you’d always come second’. Her first duty would be her crew. He would get her 20% (at best). And that’s not a relationship. And it’s a valid choice. Finally, ‘not for a second’ feels like the Jaffen relationship was meaningless. It was too offhand. A little more like: ‘No. That wasn’t me. It was like living an alternate fantasy life but I’ll take my reality.’

2023-07-05 10:29:47 +0000 UTCI think Roxann's performance in her acting role was beautiful. The episode did feel slower, but there was - I thought - a desire to allow the actors to carry the story more than the director. I loved that intimacy with the characters, but agree that the second of a two-parter is usually pacier and maybe they should have switched on who directed?

2023-07-05 10:28:39 +0000 UTCI gotta say I don't think that it would have worked out between Jaffen and Janeway. I can't remember when I first thought it (certainly since being an adult), but the point when Janeway is telling him about what Chakotay said, he was so belittling in his disbelief that she had the ability to captain a starship. He diminished her in that moment and I just feel like over time that would have become a trait of their relationship, that he didn't think she was as capable as she actually was. Every time I watch this episode it makes me angry. The fact that, at the end, he doesn't seem too bothered about the relationship ending when he says goodbye to her on Voyager, and instead has taken the supervisor role rather than considered staying with her where she is in charge (and so in the position of power), speaks volumes. Maybe I'm being overly sensitive or whatever, but as a woman who has chosen to be single after relationships where I was made to feel lesser than the male, I literally want to punch Jaffen from that moment onwards (well, from the get-go because I know it's coming). Janeway needs someone who sees her potential, respects her, and enables her to blossom, not someone who scoffs at the idea that she could be a Starfleet captain. I don't think that's Chakotay either, btw. I think it needs to be someone outside the Starfleet bubble. I'd have Q on the list before Chakotay because he doesn't care about little things like rank and career. It may be that it was a memory, being with Jaffen, of something lost that she revisited, but I think Janeway is at peace in her proactive decision to be single, just as I am. Yes, if something comes along that can work out then great but it's going to have to be something exceptional and Chakotay, Jaffen and Q are definitely not that!

2023-07-05 10:06:13 +0000 UTCRobbie mentioned a special camera / equipment used for the one shot of Chakotay laying on the medicial table. When such a device is just used in a small amount of scenes are they rented? Usually I guess cameras, different lenses and such things belong to the studio or the company for which the series is shot? I just was wondering and curious.

2023-06-26 10:15:59 +0000 UTCI don't think that there is anything wrong with the blocking in the supervisors office scene. He leans to the right as a bit of comedy then goes to his left because that is literally the ONLY place he can go. He cant go right because of the wall and he cant go straight because there are two people in the way so he goes left. What is the problem with that? Point taken about how Janeway should not have that much stuff, but we can't see the whole planet and do not know if there are trees or not. Come on man. Cameras have timers on them. Have for decades. Come on man.

2023-06-19 12:20:07 +0000 UTCThis episode is oddly close to the Stargate SG-1 ep "Beneath the Surface", which aired 6 months before this one and does pair up its will-they-or-won't-they characters (Sam and Jack) while they've lost their memories, only to have to return to their original, military-appropriate platonic relationship afterwards. That might be where the idea that Chakotay and Janeway were meant to be lovers in this episode came from.

2023-06-19 00:19:10 +0000 UTCCame here to say this. Also that they considered having her and Chakotay (instead of Jaffen) but it didn't make it past writer room discussion, I think. Too bad -- it would have been perfect -- we would have gotten to see them as a couple without any "permanent" effect to the crew structure (but lots of conflict to touch on here and there, which of course, would have required more character continuity)

2023-06-18 01:11:40 +0000 UTCFinally catching up after a family week at the beach! Robbie - your Life Lesson made me immediately think of a song from Into The Woods. The Baker’s Wife sings “Must it all be either less or more? Either plain or grand? Is it always "or?" Is it never "and?" That's what woods are for For those moments in the woods … Let the moment go. Don't forget it for a moment, though Just remembering you've had an "and" When you're back to "or" Makes the "or" mean more Than it did before…”.

2023-06-17 23:51:34 +0000 UTCI wonder if the writers were listening to Oingo Boingo when writing this episode. The lyrics to "Perfect System" (sung by Jack Skellington) fits it to a T.

2023-06-17 17:28:57 +0000 UTCJANEWAY: It may not have been real, Chakotay, but it felt like home. If you hadn't come after me, I never would've known that I had another life. CHAKOTAY: Are you sorry I showed up? JANEWAY: Not for a second. Resume course, Mister Paris. 👏 👏 👏

2023-06-17 17:20:05 +0000 UTCw/r/t the photo of Tom & B'Elanna, why couldn't the computer have taken the photo? There's monitors and cameras everywhere (which is why you can video chat from any console).

2023-06-15 02:19:09 +0000 UTCI wish the guys (since they are now full-blown J/C Shippers) had commented on the time Janeway is lovingly touching Jaffen's face and she seems to be focused on the right side of his forehead -- like there should be a tattoo there or something.

2023-06-12 14:39:55 +0000 UTCGood news: AI isn't going to take over the world, it's just going to plagiarize it. All the 'what if AGI???' talk is religiosity at best, and a misleading smokescreen from the actual harms at worst. It's not an argument that serious AI scientists are making, just the TESCREAL techbros.

2023-06-12 11:47:57 +0000 UTCThere was a young Klingon named Bel'anna whose food of choice was banana. She joined the Marquis, But then Janeway said "You're free" [....and some other line that rhymes with "be'alanna'.]

2023-06-12 10:00:21 +0000 UTCmaybe the doc cheated on the Kobyashi Maru scenario (ha ha). Just remember watching "Star Trek" (J.J. film) last night. Not bad really. Worth it for Leonard Nimoy's cameo.

2023-06-12 09:36:41 +0000 UTCThis is Roxann's directing ep - don't actors have a hard time directing themselves as well as practically the whole cast, as well as all the pre-shoot prep that goes into it. Hand off as much as you can to "2nd unit" and just direct the primary cast I suppose.

2023-06-12 09:22:30 +0000 UTCYou'd think of course in classic Trek style, there'd be SOME sort of social commentary on child labour. Come to think of it did you see any other characters that seemed to be of child age?

2023-06-12 05:17:42 +0000 UTCHoly crap! I JUST started this episode, walked into my kitchen to grab a drink, and came back JUST in time to hear Garrett talking about shoving drugs into somewhere that for many of us, is STRICTLY an EXIT ONLY. Now I gotta rewind it to see just what the hell I missed in those 30 seconds. (It must've been really something in order to go from the Opening theme music to talking about shoving drugs up your bum in less time than it takes to pour a glass of Kool-Aid. (Yes, yes, I drink a kids drink. I know. At least it's not drugs up me bum, though. LOL)
