Have you ever been part way through a project and decided to throw out a ton of the experiments and work you just did because you think you now have a better idea? Well that is what hit me part way through this dice video and Katelyn was nice enough to not guilt me too much for it.
First, a little background: my initial dream idea was to have 1 LED per face of each dice but even though the LEDs are really small, they are not THAT small. Instead we next went with a design of 6 LEDs around a metal cube so that no matter what rotation the dice were at, a few LEDs would be lit at the same time (they are brightest when in the same axis as the power transmitter coil). That totally worked but it bothered me that the dice now had spots of light at random points on their face.
So my "bright" idea was to use a transparent, clear core and have all the LED lights face inward, so that at least the glow is now at the center of each dice. The little inserts we made now super remind me of a tiny fusion reactor or something which is an awesome bonus. We also tried covering them with holographic flakes to see if we like that look.
Hopefully I explained everything well enough for you to make sense of the pictures along with this post haha! Excited to get this video out! -E
