They are fixed height shelves, but the wheels make it easy to turn any storage room into a "library stacks" situation as long as you leave room to move them around. I've also been helping a friend who broke her pelvis to get ready to move. As we sort through items, we make sure there's a "sell, donate, pack" system so the things being given away don't take up valuable storage space.
