Engineer vs non-engineer

So for the resin lenticular lens video we needed to make 3 "mold masters" to pour silicone around to create our mold. This is something we've had to do in the past and I can't help but laugh at/admire Evan's brain sometimes. For comparison, here's my version of a mold box from a past project where we tried making rainbow diffusion resin

I grabbed a box from my "box of good boxes" that I like to keep, we glued the masters down, and we poured silicone over them.

Here is what Evan came up with for this mold box:

*takes breath* A perfectly sized base with the exact diameter that can fit into our pressure pot, precision made with the laser cutter and held together with thumb screws, with a built in spacer so that we can glue the 3 mold masters in place with the perfect 1/4" gap around them for optimal efficiency silicone usage, and you'll notice the spacer has little "pull bars" attached to it so we can easily raise it out once the 3 masters are glued down.

Gotta love him :P

Engineer vs non-engineer

Comments

I (a software engineer) had a running joke with one of our mechanical engineers, because his solutions were lovely CAD models printed on a $10,000 3D printer, and my solution was always gaffers tape. But it would take him at least 3 days to model and print his, and 1 minute to make mine!

I make mold boxes out of anything I can. I love reusing things before sending it to a landfill or recycling center. Makes me feel like I've done something good. So I reuse as much as I can and in the long run I save money, help the environment, and generally don't have as much waste to worry about. But I love to see such similar people come up with such different ways to tackle the same problem lol
