It really shows how kind Shin is when he wipes the blood off his hand before picking up the locket to show Eugene. Also, have you noticed how Shin doesn't look as boyish as cour 1 anymore?

He can easily tell them no and stop them from reenlisting or getting the equipment needed to go back to the war. Plus, the Officer school condition was so that when the war ends, they could get whatever jobs they want instead of being just another veteran. They never even considered an "After the war" and he's spent the past month trying to get them to consider what happens next. The trauma of being raised in the camps in the 86th district won't let them.
