"This document explores a variety of different scales which can be used to create music. I recommend memorizing the “formulas” for building the scales you enjoy. Moreover, if you can apply your knowledge of how a scale is built, with your knowledge of intervals and note names, this can be an easy way to access these sounds without relying on pre-established fretboard patterns. For example, if you know that the natural minor scale is spelt 1-2-b3-4-5-b6-b7, you can derive those sounds by creating these intervals from your root note.
Consider that G minor contains the notes: G (root) - A (Ma2nd up for G) -Bb (Mi3 from G) -C (P4 from G) -D (P5 from G) -Eb (Mi6 from G) - F(Mi7 from G). Notice how all of the notes in the scale (other than G) share the interval relationships laid out in the scale formula."
