Pentatonic scales get a bad rap in Math Rock / Midwest Emo, but they can actually be very useful if used properly. The trick is to think about these in a creative way where you write lines that avoid generic blues cliches. Think about things like string skips, interesting chord shapes derived from the scales, etc.
