GAM Bonus 046: World War Z

With veteran guest masochist Rachel.

"You see all these fucking zombies, bro?"

ForwardslashTim

Because I can't help but compare things to D&D, that scientist losing his mind is a prime example of someone rolling a one while they're using a weapon they're not proficient with.

ForwardslashTim

Honestly, it's bad when the Lego robot Chicken version is better than the movie

Joseph Misinec

No matter how many times Brad Pitt is mentioned, I always picture Marky Mark as the lead

tsukiouji

NO mention of the really weird cameo by Mathew Fox billed as "paratrooper" at the end?!?!?! I had to check IMDb, thought I was going crazy. But it is him. This is post Lost, he is a KNOWN actor. So, WTF is going on here????? really really weird....

Kidda Sweet

Another jab to Heath's kidneys, please

The Deep State of Kelno'reem

Unless it’s Tom Baker or John Pertwee again, not really 😂

The Real Moorey

Welcome to the family! :)

Niamh Coghlan

Nobody else was excited to see the 12th Doctor (Who) playing a WHO Doctor?

Kara Z

It isn't a matter of it not being as good as the book. It's a matter of them yanking the book out of the hands of the writer, ripping it apart, throwing it in a garage can, taking a crap in the garbage can, then setting it on fire. They probably bought the IP from the author or publisher, who thought that they might actually make a fair translation of the book ... say like they did with The Martian. The people who did The Martian stripped it down to its bare bones and cut over half of the content ... but they kind of had to. It's a very dense book that's aimed at geeks who love the details. But once the producers of World War Z had the IP, they just yanked one or two details from that brilliant book and wrote a shlock movie, then had the nerve to stick the name of the book on it. It's an absolute disrespect for the source material, even worse than what was done to Starship Troopers. I happen to disagree with you about the enjoyability of the movie as it stands on its own, but that's secondary. We could probably have an amusing discussion about the pros and cons of it. But that rape of the source material is horrifying. So, you didn't enjoy The Prophesy, back in the day? Or did you just never watch that one?

Looming Dementia

Firstly, I’m not a movie guy. Long time GAM devourer but new patreon. I have only heard of 1/2 the bonus episode movies, seen maybe 2 of them before (and I’m approaching 50yo. Who says Australians are behind?) Just watched it tonight, about to listen to the review. First thought is that waaay too much crammed into a movie to attempt to develop a feasible and congruent develop . Seems like it should have been a series like a childhood favourite, the original ‘V’ series....but not as engaging. That said....I’m looking forward to hearing from Rachael again 😍

The Real Moorey

The audiobook is excellent, I bought it when I heard about it on Philosopher's in Space. The best audiobook I heard in awhile. And the guys are comfortable enough with Rachel to give her a bit of hell back.

Hypatia

fwiw the audiobook of the book is one of the best audiobooks I've ever listened to. They do a full-cast with people doing characters like a documentary.

Rachel J Larris

I adore Rachel. I'd love to hear her more often. She's hilarious and the gentle jabs at Heath are the best.

Rachel Adams

I actually lol’d at the ScriptATron’s final joke

Nick

I don't know why Eli keeps singing "Truly, Madly, Deeply" like it's a Nickelback song. Darren Hayes has the voice of an ANGEL, monsieur.

Markus D

Nope not sure who she is perciscely. Eli's wife is Anna.

Ben

So Rachel is Eli’s spouse?

Rachel J Larris

Amazing book, the movie was ok

Square root of negative one

I'm glad they picked it. As are others. Is it still a waste of time? Get over yourself and appreciate the work these guys do

Charles Pickering

Loved the movie and the book. While very different, they both gave me the same creepy, uneasy feeling. I thought the movie did a good job of capturing the feeling of seeing the end of the world in the same way the book “documented” it.

Evee

Well, I sure liked it. I guess I had some time to waste. Who knew?

Como

Loved the book so much; hated the movie

Tyler "Alex" Allen

Truly worth two comments there.

JustAGuy

So glad I didn't watch this movie. Woof!

Lethal Wheat Gluten

This is an embarrassingly bad episode compare to other movies they’ve done for bonus episodes.

Ian

What a fucking waste of time. This was the best secular movie to break down? A disgraceful pick.

Ian

Oh, sweet baby satan, a bonus episode with Rachel! Thank you!

Taru Tikkanen

I had to watch this movie and write a paper about it. For college. English 102. It’s amazing my brain isn’t mush.

Jennifer Farinet

Oh no. My first ever Gam movie I love. I know it's not as good as the book, but I love it as a stand alone modern cheesy zombie movie.
