GAM Bonus 043: CATS!

Yep. Those cats.

Comments

"Hal. It's about cats." Actual quote from ALW

tsukiouji

Okay…so Heath saw the same show at the same venue?!?!? Small world …

Catboyslim

Never understood why Cats on stage was such a hit. Got suckered into seeing it as a child ( in Detroit too!) and am currently convinced that Hamilton will be looked upon as just as ridiculous in the future. Let’s rap along with with our forefathers in powered wigs and silk tights….

Catboyslim

still insane

Markus Nävergård

Sorry to comment years later, but this has been driving me crazy since I fall asleep listening to this episode a few times a minth.. "Jelllicle cats" is in fact a corruption of "dear little cats" from am unpublished Elliot porm.

Lauren W

So I am going through this catalogue backwards (slowly) and I was just listening to another episode where Eli mentioned this was the bonus and skipped ahead.

Jesse Ozog

I’ve seen the 1980s movie and I’ve seen this on stage. Also, I own the book of poetry the show is based on. When we first found out it was being made, my sisters and I were super excited. Then the trailer dropped. And we’ve been hating on it ever since.

Laura Lusby

How many variations of Dame Judy Dench did we get? Dame Doody Jench, Jame Doody Dench, Jame Doody Jench, Dame Judy Jench, Dame Doody Dench... did I miss any?

AaronRobertoMusic

I think all of the bonus episodes should have one of the guys not watch it so the others have to explain it. I loved that aspect to Batman Vs Superman as well.

Canadian Puppeteers

I need you to know that I (1) genuinely loved Cats and (2) became a patron because I saw they covered this movie and I *knew* they would hate it and the episode would be amazing. I was not disappointed on either front. When I exited the theater with my wife, I tweeted about how much I loved Cats and *she* tweeted that it was the best eldritch horror film of 2019.

Robin - Books That Burn

Its this one https://www.rte.ie/entertainment/movie-reviews/2019/1218/1101984-cats-is-a-twee-and-irksome-furrago-of-a-movie/ Notably the first line "First off, full disclosure -- I am not a cat person. Second off -- after watching this frankly mortifying film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Cats,' I'm not altogether sure I am a movie person anymore either."

potato potato also another potato

I took a bong hit every time Eli mispronounced Jame Judy Jench and I still wasn't high enough to enjoy the movie when I saw it straight after the episode.

Ben - Come eat at Ben's Big Bugs, the restaurant where I force you to eat bowl after bowl of big, beady-eyed bugs!

Did I miss where Eli mentioned the meanest review comment?

Moriar

She sings McCavity which is in the Original play, but she also Subha Beautiful Ghosts which is her original song.

Alexander Thomas

This review made me remember some old (1981) stuff. And so I though: why keep this nightmare fuel to myself? Enjoy. https://youtu.be/3rIp1ge_CQ8

Trivia from IMDb Pro: Tom Hooper's second musical movie after Les Misérables. It was rumored that Hooper wanted Suki Waterhouse to star in this movie. The stage version is the fourth-longest-running show in Broadway history, and the sixth-longest-running in London's West End. Jennifer Hudson and Sir Ian McKellen have both worked with Bill Condon. Hudson collaborated once with Condon in Dreamgirls, for which she won an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance as Effie White. McKellen has collaborated with Condon four times, in Gods and Monsters in which McKellen received a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Actor; Mr. Holmes; and most recently as Cogsworth in Disney's Beauty and the Beast, as well in The Good Liar. James Corden and Sir Ian McKellen have appeared in Disney musical movies. Corden appeared in Into the Woods, and McKellen appeared in Beauty and the Beast. Anne Hathaway and Rihanna were considered for parts. By coincidence, Taylor Swift had released the first official merchandise for her two cats, Olivia and Meredith, earlier the same day that her casting in this movie was announced. The two cats also featured in Deadpool 2, in which the title character wears a t-shirt, with an image of the two of them. Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote new songs exclusively for the film. This is Andrew Lloyd Webber's fifth musical to be adapted into a movie following Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and The Phantom of the Opera. This is the first movie adaptation of "Cats" since the 1998 made-for-television BBC movie. Universal Pictures originally planned to release Wicked on this release date. Steven Spielberg's Amblimation planned to adapt the musical into an animated movie, but abandoned it when the studio shut down. This is the first time Old Deuteronomy has been represented as female. Dame Judi Dench was cast in the original 1981 London stage production in the dual roles of Jennyanydots and Grizabella. However, shortly before the opening of the original production, she suffered an injury that forced her to withdraw from the show, to be replaced at the last minute by Elaine Paige. In Six Degrees of Separation, there is a discussion of how impossible it would be to pull off a film of the Broadway show "Cats." Paul (Will Smith) tells dinner guests his father is making a movie. Amongst the guests excited to be an extra in the movie of "Cats" was Sir Ian McKellen (Gus The Theatre Cat). Rebel Wilson is allergic to cats in real life. Tom Hooper's first movie shot in the 2.39:1 widescreen aspect ratio since his feature film directing debut, Red Dust. Idris Elba and Sir Ian McKellen have starred in Disney live-action remakes. Elba played Shere Khan in The Jungle Book, and McKellen played Cogsworth in Beauty and the Beast. Trailers for this movie received far more dislikes than likes on YouTube primarily due to the cats' awkward part-human, part-CGI appearances, and how seriously they were played off. One reviewer on entertainment site Nerdist News said they felt the teaser trailer was more terrifying than the trailer for It Chapter Two, which was released around the same time. The cast includes two Oscar winners: Jennifer Hudson and Dame Judi Dench; and one Oscar nominee: Sir Ian McKellen. The cast attended "cat school" for preparation, according to Taylor Swift. Was originally intended to be a traditionally animated movie before Tom Hooper came on board to direct. One clip that features prominently in the trailer is Bombalurina (Taylor Swift) lounging in a lighted crescent moon sign, sprinkling powder from a can marked "catnip". This is a reference to a large sign depicting a lighted crescent moon with a cocaine spoon that hung in the infamous Studio 54 nightclub during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Catnip is a herb containing a compound that acts on the feline brain in a way that some veterinarians describe as analogous to the "high" that humans receive from recreational drugs like cocaine. T. S. Eliot's book "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats", which was the basis for this movie, was also widely quoted by Sir Peter Ustinov in Logan's Run (1976). Second movie in which Idris Elba portrayed a feline. The first time was in The Jungle Book (2016) as the tiger Shere Khan. On December 21st 2019, a mere 2 days after its release, Universal Pictures announced they would be releasing a new version with updated CGI at an undisclosed time. One week after its release, it was revealed by The Daily Mail that director Tom Hooper edited and re-cut the film after it was panned by many critics. One of the worst-reviewed movies of the year, it currently has a 17% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The London and Broadway theater productions ran for 20 years, turned into the 4th-highest grossing musical ever, and won the Tony for best musical. Similar things happened to The Wiz, Mame, Rent and Chrorus Line, which were all Broadway sensations, but then bombs as movies. Andrew Lloyd Weber has had to fight off charges that he was a plagiarist hack throughout his career. "Memory" in particular - one of his signature songs - is said to be copied from (or influenced by) Ravel's Bolero. Entered in the 100 worst movies of all time on IMDb. The film includes one human character and several literal mice and cockroaches. The stage production cast is only made up of cats.

My favourite review of this movie was “Cats is the worst thing to happen to cats since dogs”

Alex Eckersley

“Ohhh, it’s like being a woman for one second” fucking SENT ME 😂

RJ Blue

Wait.....Taylor Swift didn’t write her song. That’s in the original Broadway soundtrack.

lil-brudder89

Well, on the positive side, I learned where the "Rum Tug Tuggernaut" nickname came from in "Tropic Thunder." No idea it was any kind of a cultural reference.

Kurt Montandon

I wish I'd been in the same theater as Anna. I lost my mind over Skimbleshank having pants too, but I would have killed to see her reactions to the cats with shoes and how the fuck relative size works in Mungojerry and Rumpleteaser.

Andi

I might have, allegedly, started watching a bootleg copy of this film. I lasted 7 Minutes. Seriously.

The Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch Childrens Non denominational Choir.

Sweet baby satan, what an episode! Thank you.

Taru Tikkanen

How is Tom Hooper an adult man?

Markus D

I NEED to see what the mouse and beetle kids look like. The stage show (at least the ones I've seen) does a sort of cute thing where the "kittens" put on some like DIY trash costumes of mice and beetles. I don't know why for this they decided to do otherwise.

Markus D

I would like to clarify that when Taylor swift’s dad mentioned catnip, the director asked “what’s that?” Because Tom Hooper, director of the movie “Cats” didn’t know what catnip was. So T Swift and her dad proceeded to show him a bunch of YouTube clips of cats acting crazy on catnip.

Dirkdammit

I saw this movie in theaters because partner wanted to. I knew from my parents it had no real plot. I'm glad to see my reactions reflected in this episode.

bad.shepherd.pod

This is what I became a patron for. I paid money for this. Good times. But seriously what kind of leverage does anyone have over all these amazing actors?!

Wendy

Rebel Wilson and Melissa McCarthy are the same person. Prove me wrong.

El Oso Café

A lot of furries actually aren't into the way the "cats" look in this movie, interestingly enough. However, I did have a similar revelation upon seeing the stage play. I really like the costumes in it (except for the very floppy tails).

Markus D

I loved weird hate watching this movie, and realising on a deep personal level that I may in fact be a furry!

Embrace your own void this is mine

I almost came when I saw the notification.

Markus D

Omgomg

bad.shepherd.pod

Ok please do The Apple. Because you’ve broken the cinematic musical curtain you might as well take out a load bearing wall!

Bill Capehart

Thanks. This must unfortunately be my last bonus episode for a while. Thanks for making THIS the last one <3

Hjörtur Þorgeirsson

Today is my last day before vacation and this made my whole day better. Thank you. ❤️
