Monster of the Week: Schute

Bannock's Guide to the Monster's of Llamarkolos

   Schute

Finally we get to something good! Schutes are mainly harmless. I mean, they're as big as four Nalanjos, and they're as dangerous as any wild animal, but they're not ACTIVELY evil like some of the other critters in this guide. AND they happen to be absolutely delicious!

Schutes are giant crustaceans that live in the desert. That makes it a bit of a hassle to actually GET one, but oh boy is it worth it. At a metre and a half high and five metres long, the MEAT on that baby could feed an entire village for two nights. And yeah it's not TECHNICALLY seafood, but it must've crawled out of the sea sometime, right?

Some Farmers've tried to domesticate Schutes, but I think they're about as stubborn as the Farmers are. They don't do real well outside the desert, and they'll just stop eating and curl up until they starve. A couple operations have been succesful, but they're a lot smaller and don't taste all that good.

Right, right, this is a creature guide, not a menu. So Schutes are pretty slow to move, but they're capable of bursts of speed when they want to, so don't underestimate them. Their tail packs a whallop and can break your ribs, but the real threat is those claws - lethal, yet oh so delicious. Those things grab hold of your arm, I'm sorry, but you're losin it.

They're typically found aboveground either drinking at watering holes, or picking apart a carcass or a fallen tree. The rest of the time they're buried under the sand. They don't typically mind being walked on either, but if you feel the sand start rumbling, it's probably a good idea to get out of the way!

Stahl's Notes:

These are technically dangerous but if you know how to deal with them, it can be over in seconds. Just be sure there's a pot nearby so you don't waste the effort. Once these things die, they start to rot QUICK. Cooking and other methods can help to preserve it, but if it rots, it'll leave your stomach in knots for days.

Anyway, what's important is that if you simply have a tool long enough, you can stab it in one of two places and it'll go down immediately, no matter how healthy it is. There's a tiny hole right at the top of the mouth area, between the eyes. If you stab it right there, its arms will fall off immediately and it'll just die. They also have a weak point in the armor on their backs, around the point where the tail connects to the main body. You can stab right there and swish your blade around a little bit, and it'll just stop moving. I'm not sure if it actually kills the creature but, it does stop moving.

In retrospect, that actually sounds incredibly inhumane.

Please cook what you kill.
