By the way, right now it seems there's good reason to hope for a 4th season. It seems they are getting the crew back together to start production in 2025. But it's not 100 % official yet. Yes the show is spectacular, and get's even more spectacular with each season. One reason is, that Seth Mac Farlane knows something about good scifi, and he takes this very seriously and puts a lot of effort in it. He never really wanted it to be a spoof. Obviously he knows something about comedy, too. But what he really wanted to do, was to make a new Star Trek show, but CBS declined it. So he rewrote everything a bit, and created his own franchise for a different network, and so The Orville was born. The only reason that he put so much comedy in it was, because Fox feared to get sued by CBS, if there had been too much similarity with Star Trek, but you wouldn't sue them for a "parody", right? However, I never saw it as a spoof or parody. It's what you said. It's just less stiff, and more laid back.
