The flying things were locusts. Which are supposedly one of the signs of the apocalypse. I wonder what year this is suppose to be in in the show and if they calculated it right for them actually emerging or just a plot devise. Apparently, 2024 is the next 17 year emergence AND the 13 year emergence all at once. That's alot of locust!
