2023-09-11 05:04:56 +0000 UTC(*This could be completely wrong*) But I think with this episode at the time fans wanted a what-if series to happen like what if Shane was to kill Rick in the field at the start.. so this was kind of an ode to that idea so they did it with Michonne and the only real way to show it without changing the story was either dreams or drugs etc. but it also as you said is to show how vigil was lost and broken. "I remember hearing stuff about this but dont know if this is the reason or not" :)
