Oh heck no eh, cardiac medicine advanced so much since, getting heart surgery in the 2010s sucked but it would have sucked a lot more in the 60s especially considering that the heart-lung machine was only first used successfully in 53.

Not only was Dons mother a prostitute and his father a John who got stuck with the baby, but his father was a nasty drunk who died leaving his wife and her new husband to raise the baby so the “parents” who raised Don had no connection to him whatsoever. Kinda explains to a point why Don isn’t a great family man. Cooper is probably in my top 3 characters on this show. His message to Joan actually had a few layers as I heard it. One, that she could do better than that guy that night, Two, she could do better than Roger’s mistress and Three she doesn’t need to be looking for a rich older husband, she has the talent to make her own success.
