The Machine gave the number to Harold and not Root because she knew Root wouldn’t hesitate. She wanted Harolds view on it and for him to make the final decision. Personally I think Harold is too self righteous. I’m with Shaw, trust The Machine. Roots already told us what’s going to happen when Samaritan comes online, “in the first minutes after Samaritan comes online a lot of people of going to die, but they’re gonna start with 4” Only thing I’m ever disappointed about with this episode is that we didn’t get to see Shoot flying around kicking Relevant ass. I love that we can fully see now how much Shaw trusts The Machine and by extension Root. She didn’t even really ask any questions, just followed. The last run of episodes this season are phenomenal. Amazing writing and storytelling.

Saying that "you're not sure whos side to take here" is a great accomplishment for the show. It shows how nuanced and layered it is. There is no obvious right or wrong. What this episode also reminds me of is the old "would you kill Adolf Hitler when he is still an innocent child to prevent what he does in the future?" That questions assumes that the future is set in stone and none other action than killing him is able to prevent it. And of course it comes from a perspective where we already know the outcome. Our team in the show doesn't has the luxury of time traveling hindsight. The machine is only predicting, that "Samaritan going online" could be really bad but its still only calculating "probabilities" and also calculating "chances" to prevent it from happen. There is no 100% certainty in any of this. I liked Harold argument here. Killing the politician now is crossing a line that can't be undone. There might be a better or other way in the near future which we just don't yet see right now. But what if there is not? Of course we also don't know if the machine really wanted to kill the politician. That's only what Reese assumes, but he might be wrong.

This show is fantastic, I don't understand why it's so underrated. Thank you for watching and getting invested in shows that are not very popular on reaction channels but are worth watching, like POI, Orphan Black and X-Files. It's a pleasure to rewatch these shows, I think I'll be a patreon for a while. By the way there's another show I'm sure you could apreciate if you haven't watched it yet, you have the sensitivity to understand the deeper layers of it, it's "Six feet under" (I found only one reactor to it). Keep up the good work!

One thing I’ll say about my own opinion of what Finch’s thought process is: I think that while Finch of course knows that people died on the relevant side of the numbers all along, the difference for him was that there was still a person making those decisions, and the machine wasn’t the one saying “kill.” The machine says “investigate” and a human operative makes the final call. Interesting then that getting this number meant a human still did make the call— Finch.
