The books are very readable and I have reread them several times while waiting for new seasons to start. Can you imagine stopping the seasons right here?? We fought very hard for continuing the show as it is so good, one of the best TV series in the last 60 years IMHO. When this season ended in June of 2018 we at least knew S4 was in the works but we had to wait 18 MONTHS to see it!! At least you only have to wait 3 days! LOL. I love this episode so much, so well done and the ending is almost Shakespearian. Julie saved planet Earth from anihilation by driving Eros into Venus. Melba (Clarissa) saves the entire solar system by reversing the buffers the way Ren showed her to "not" do in order to power down the Behemoth. So thrilling and so satisfying every time! JPM introduced us to the protomolecule, his daughters save humanity from being destroyed by it. Can't wait for S4!

I bought the books... but couldn't bring myself to read them so far... :) Maybe after the show is finished completely.

Drummer's storyline is based on another character in the 3rd book with similar circumstances however a different fate. So book readers were ecstatic over the last minute save by Naomi. Drummer is a fan favorite.

This is the last episode produced under SyFy who canceled it prior to Amazon buying the rights This is also the end of the first trilogy ( or Act 1). Everything led up to this amazing finale and I like to thnk of the first trilogy as "The Work". There are 9 books in the series with the 9th coming out in a few months to complete the story. S5 will be available on Dec 16 and pre-prod is underway on S6. Let's hope they can tell the entire story.

Well I'm glad you explained all of that, because I didn't get any of that from it

Love Ashford: Not a villian, just a complex character with a different (very understandable) perspective on what to do. As for the protomolecule: We now know for sure what it is. Self-replicating space-probes (also known as von Neuman probes) constructed to travel millions of years through our galaxy on carriers like Phoebe until they enter a star system which fits certain conditions. Than the protomolecule activates its program, self-replicates and accumulates enough material to build a ring portal to connect that star system to the portal network (the "ring space"), essentially building a road to that system. Nothing more, nothing less. Of course we still can't be sure for what purporse this road was built (and if the existence of humanity as intelligent species is one of the conditions for the protomolecule to become active) More importantly: The protomolecule has to have some sort of AI to assess conditions and make descisions. Same for the automated station within that ring space. So how does the protomolecule AI react, when it tries to send a message to its creators (about the finished new road), but gets no response? The civilization that built the protomolecule is long gone now, seemingly killed millions of years ago by "something" (maybe something discovered while building the ring network)? So the AI tries to find a way to connect to its creators (and fulfill its purporse) or at least understand what happened and assess the situation? We will see...

I don't know if anyone touched on this in the comments from previous episodes, but I think a quick explanation of Melba's super-strength is apropos. She has an endocrine enhancement implant in her mouth. Per The Expanse wiki: Endocrine Enhancement Implant - Control module for a full Endocrine axis conversion. Affects the right posterior parietal cortex, the right prefrontal cortex, as well as fronto-striatal circuits to alter the subjects perception of time. Saturates the body's system with a synthetic compound as well as enables the Endocrine system to over produce hormones that, when mixed and activated via control mechanism, create an extreme state of hyper physical and mental awareness in the subject. So when you see her bite down and blink rapidly, she's activating the implant. It's mentioned very briefly in the show, but explained further in the books.

The civilization that built the Rings is gone. Wiped out. What could've killed them? That's what I'd like to know. Gonna need a ride. EXACTLY well then..see ya in season 4
