Norman's character has been one of my favorite things to write because I always try to change him. He started off as this cocky, arrogant straight-ish, masc character, but eventually evolved into the quirky and shy ball of embarrassment he is today. And I like him like that.

I think Norman represents more of how I project myself in public: grade-A socially awkward. But I think what I tried to change most about Norman is his confidence in his openly Gay self. Sure, he gets embarrassed by sexual situations and screwing up his spells, but he never tries to hide himself for his gayness. That's a trait I wanted Norman to have because it's something Young Jimmy needed growing up.

I sincerely hope someday a gay teen or young adult will read this story and realize it's okay to be yourself. Unapologetically gay, that is.

The darkness surrounding Norman also plays on that gay fear and anxiety. The struggle within oneself to live happy and free. It's one of my favorite gay metaphors in this comic.
