Jazz, Economics & Military History | Sunday Recommendation

This Sunday we’re doing something new! Ill admit, it’s a little self indulgent. I have a really broad range of tastes, but nowhere to share them. That’s why I’m doing the Sunday recommendation. I’d like to share the things that keep my busy with you - be it favourite podcasts, YouTube channels or even work music.

Hopefully you’ll pick up a few new things over the coming weeks! I’d also love to hear what your favourites are down below, so be sure to share!

Podcast

We’re going to kick it off with Planet Money. That’s a really dry title, but it’s a damn good podcast! Being a NPR show, the production is top notch, as is the content. It might seem like it’s a bunch of dull talk about stocks and shares, but it isn’t. You’ll get really interesting stories presented fantastically. Their episodes are quick, snappy and always leave you knowing a little bit more about something.

Where to start: You work in an open office. I work in an open office. …I’m sure we all have opinions on open offices. Here’s the story of one of the most famous ones: [link to open office NPR].

Music

I’m going to start off with something strange. Bohren & Der Club of Gore. Quite a name. Look at their song titles. They’re also… out there. “Prowler”. “Constant Fear”. “Maximum Black”.

Sounds pretty edgy eh? Well they are a Jazz group. A fairly different flavour of jazz. Dark and bleak, but with an unsurpassed moodiness. They are one of my favourite finds of the last year. So, next time you have some downtime, grab a drink, get your notebook, collect your thoughts out and enjoy.

Where to start: They’ve made this easy. “Bohren for Beginners” is the perfect place to start.

YouTube

I’m going to keep things firmly away from Warcraft for this. First, you probably know everyone and second this spirit of this is to go broad.

Today’s nod goes to two channels - Kings and Generals and BazBattles. They’re both historical channels with a documentary format. Kings and Generals put out a lot of content, especially considering their general polish and quality. BazBattles put more time into their videos, but upload a bit slower. At any rate, people who enjoy one will enjoy the other.

They both cover history through the lens of war, but do an excellent job of not only covering battles, but also covering the surrounding context.

The where to start section is a little tricky - ultimately it’s about what history draws you in the most.
