I was so pleased to see some of my favourite early migrators in the tree outside my apartment window yesterday. I often see a pair of Golden-crowned Kinglets hopping around the spruce this time of year, presumably feasting on insects who were thinking they had finally made it through the winter unscathed. All of a sudden, the female flew right into the window. Gently, I thought, but who knows what it's like navigating the world while weighing 5 grams. She was definitely stunned, and sat on a branch for a few minutes contemplating life. The male even stopped his frantic hopping to, as it appeared to me, keep an eye on the sky for the both of them.

I'll have to put some stickers up on this window to prevent this from happening again! It's never been a problem before. I think because the tree is basically touching the glass, most birds don't have the time to build up any kind of harmful momentum. I'm not a biologist though, so what do I know.
