I understand that reference

Oh hi there!

I thought it would be fun to share some examples of how I use reference images for my comics. Back in March, we made a post about one comic that I used dozens of reference images for. But often it isn't that complicated! I have been making an effort to use fewer images from the internet and more of my own. It's not always possible when I want to draw birds that are difficult to photograph, but it's been a rewarding challenge! Plus, it's getting me back into photography as a hobby.

This wintery example captures an ideal situation for me: I go out on a walk, get inspired by a setting, take a picture, and use the picture fairly truthfully. I didn't put any detail into the forest in the background because I knew it would crowd out the bird.

I don't always have the clearest reference pictures. It can be difficult to get crisp pictures of wildlife, especially if I'm taking pictures with my phone. But when the reference pictures aren't the best, it gives me an opportunity to make up details within the scene without worrying if it matches reality at all.

I took this photo of a grackle in the river using my phone through a pair of binoculars. It's a finicky set-up, but very portable and cheaper than expensive photography equipment!

Expensive photography equipment also works! I got myself a 55-200mm lens for my Fujifilm X-T20 for my birthday (as a treat) and I'm having a blast with it! It's not quite powerful enough to catch the skittish birdies, but it's great for the usual visitors in my backyard.

February 1st is 24-hour comic day, and this year I took the chance to use a different style. I believe I painted everything using india ink and water, though my memory for this year is pretty hazy. I also took the day to paint a variety of scenes, some comical, some just quiet and observant. I wanted to capture some highlights during the day, but also the slower moments.

False Knees started as an autobiographical comic, so it feels natural to return to that on occasion. I enjoy painting people–especially the shadows on skin and clothing.

Because of the way I painted things, I remember this being a sunny day. Going through my photos, it was obviously overcast. Art is lies.

There was a lot of posing for this strip. I tried over a dozen other positions before settling on this, my final, idea. Lady observes.

I have hundreds of images of myself posing for dumb ideas. I only wanted to share this one to show off my flamingo poster.

Did you know that a crow is roughly the same height as a bottle of window cleaner?

And finally, here is Lady playing her favourite game (she's a gamer):

I was just wondering about your reference images! This post is enlightening and enlivening! Especially love the bottle of window cleaner in a tshirt - amazing.

This is really helpful. I struggle with drawing from imagination but I'm ok at drawing things I look at. Maybe your reference technique is the marriage of the two? Thanks for sharing!
