Plein air paintings and Beaver sketches

Hello Patrons!! ❤️

Last week, Josh was out on a fishing trip in Northern Ontario with some of his family. As you might have guessed from his comics, he is quite the animal lover, so he didn't fish much - but he made tons of paintings while he was on the boat! To make these he went straight to paint - no sketching.

Ontario is so beautiful.

He also got his 6-year old nephew to paint with him and honestly, I think his paintings are so pretty! Look at this!

I think this kid has gotten some of the talent from his uncle. We love these as abstract paintings!

Also, remember the post I made about the dialogue process for False Knees comics? Well yesterday's beaver comic was definitely an example of a comic that took very, very long to decide on the dialogue. Josh started with the original idea, but it took many tries to nail the words just the way he wanted to convey the joke and the context. And you know that feeling you get when you start thinking about a word too much, and it starts losing its meaning and looking weird? That's what happens sometimes when he thinks about the specific words for too long, and then it becomes even harder to decide and the joke starts feeling not funny anymore, etc... That's when it's useful for me to pop in sometimes, because I get to see the dialogue and joke with a fresh eye and I can help him out with that part. He's often working on the wording about the time I come back from work, which works out!

Anyways, I thought it'd be cool to show you the process that went into this one:

And that's it for this week! Have a great weekend!
