Al was just taking existing mass and shaping it back into a working radio. Ed was being kind of a dick to Rose in the church but it was intentional. He was acting the part of a faithless alchemist in the hopes she'd introduce him to Father Cornello. It's super funny that you say you hope the show doesn't get too dark just before Episode 4. I'm OK saying that because I know you're ahead on episodes.
