It's the eternal question of preserving the author's intent versus preserving the reader's immersion. I think either extreme has it's flaws and I'm trying to find the best compromise, but alas it's a matter of taste.

your translation takes liberties in the sense that you use more informal colloquialisms that are common to native speakers. Not that the translation has been bad at all, which I have appreciated. but your take is enjoyable too.
