RE books: 1984 is primarily a criticism of the USSR and the way they politically flipped from ally to enemy. However, there is also a criticism of McCarthyism and other oppressive political movements of the time pre and post WW2. Also, in terms of fiction...you can really read anything to add to your knowledge 'bank' and vocabulary. The key is to examine it critically. Most popular books have themes and allusions worth exploring. You don't have to just read classics. However, just reading one genre is only going to offer a limited scope. (Also, fun fact: Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard and Twilight by Stephanie Meyer are considered acceptable texts for English courses at a high school and at a university level)
