2019-02-01 07:59:13 +0000 UTCI can tell you that the only reason I care about politics is pure self interest. I figure I don't have the conviction and really don't have the resources to start my own country, so, I'm basically always going to be 'owned' in some part by political operators. This is either via taxation, the bounds of the law or any system of control. So, considering I complete lack of desire to be a politician or an activist, it is better to have a comprehensive view of who owns me on a given day and select better owners if I can.

2019-01-31 05:08:37 +0000 UTCI agree, the issue Jordan seems to have regarding recruitment and meritocracy of institutions such as the ABC seems to be more from our current system of ranking candidates which is heavily reliant on your resume, references, nepotism etc. To counter Jordan's arguments though, looking from a purely meritocratic point of view one could argue that Asians are undeserving of university spaces because it is not their innate intelligence but usually money spent on tutors and unreasonable amounts of time spent studying (speaking from experience), forgoing other aspects of their lives and potentially living unhealthy lifestyles to attain a high ATAR. Bottom line is measures of aptitude and capibility are inherently flawed and it's difficult to capture the true worth of any person applying for a position/university. To add where are you getting this idea that somehow east Asian countries are more meritocratic than the west Jordan? You've studied in Korea so surely you know how much of a joke university is in Korea, it is notoriously easy and considered a glorified holiday for students after their tough entrance exams, before they become bean counters when they graduate. It's pretty much all a prestige game and arguably more nepotistic than the west. Another point of comparison, private universities in Australia are all pretty much considered shit right and all the well ranked and quality universities are public whereas in countries such as Japan and Korea private universities which are most accessible to the wealthy and well connected rank highly and contend well with more meritocratic public institutions in terms of prestige.
2019-01-30 10:58:34 +0000 UTCLoved this pod, guys. Jordan, if you want to get into philosophy, I don't recommend podcasts about philosophy. They usually make it slow and boring. I recommend books on or by philosophers. I mean, I haven't read any, but a trusted author might give a good interpretation. Honestly, I love philosophy so much, I get a buzz from a pseudo philosophical dialogue in an episode of Star Trek or Babylon 5, or a Terry Pratchett novel.

2019-01-30 10:19:07 +0000 UTCIs there not a discussion to be had about the importance of quotas in politics? Quotas ensure that policy is best representing the pubic. This I believe is the only place I believe quotas are appropriate. Jordan’s discussion in opposition to quotas had absolutely no relevance to politics. Would be interested to hear this further discussed. Also when will Mislav stop chanting ‘virtue signalling’ and going on rants about topics that he seems extremely confident on but is clear in his arguments that he doesn’t know what he is talking about.

2019-01-29 05:58:31 +0000 UTC1. Name of your new friday segment on youtube: 'Jordies 101 ways to survive the internet' 2. I believe that Irish guy with the Che Guevara shirt has defected to the 10 network and is actually paid to laugh at all the jokes at the studio 10 show. [EDIT]: Ive got an even better name actually 'Jordies hot topics' nice and simpler.
