I know what you're thinking, me. Yuck and no thanks. One look at this character, the art style, and the expression on it's face is enough. Nimona isn't just Tumblrcore, Tumblrcore is Nimona. This is peak tumblr, the zenith, the ultimate expression of something that should have died years ago. Is it a rotten film? No. Not at all. I'm just saying it wasn't on my radar, and if it had been, I'd have wanted it off.
But I'm not really that picky. I'll watch anything, no matter how much it makes me puke. And while it may look repugnant in screenshots, the animation has a great bounce and life to it. The story is predictable and the main character is exactly how as irritating as she appears. Yet there is passion here. I won't over-intellectualize it. It's fun.
This is the final film to come from Blue Sky, the Ice Age studio that is apparently dead now. It nearly didn't come out but Netflix picked it up. I don't know how much was done by them before they went out of business and handed it off, but it's probably the best thing to ever come from there, which might not be saying a lot, but it's something.
Let's all give a little salute to Blue Sky Studios. I remember nothing about any of their other films, except that the very first Ice Age featured the masterpiece known as "Send Me On My Way" by Rusted Root, and that's enough to earn my respect. Let's play it one more time while we lower them into the ground.
