DC Movie Mark Out 3 - The Suicide Squad

The Suicide Squad

Good news everyone, this one doesn't suck. 

It almost feels redundant to attempt an in depth review of this movie because everything that needs to be said can be expressed by simply pointing at the previous suicide squad and saying it's not like that one.

The action is better, the soundtrack is better, the look is better, the tone is better, the villain is better, the story is better, and the characters are better. This one has a shark. 

The shark is awesome, Idris Elba is less obnoxious than Wil Smith, and John Cena is both cool and hilarious, really stepping out of his comfort zone considering for the last 20 years he's been playing a version of himself that is superhumanly dedicated to being the opposite of those things. 

Unsurprisingly the only annoying part of this movie was Harley Quinn, the character everyone loves but nobody actually understands except for Paul Dini and myself.

One egregiously crappy scene involved Harley getting tied up and "tortured". I put tortured in quotations because it certainly looks like a torture scenario, except that Harley has no visible damage except for a bloody nose. The scene is presented as if we're really supposed to feel bad for her, like she's got mousetraps on her tits or something, but she clearly does not. 

She escapes from this predicament by wrapping her legs around a guy and choking him.  That part at least, i can buy. The character has always been a gymnast and not afraid to do some killing so it makes sense she could do that i guess.

But it takes a hard turn into stupid-ville when she starts John Wick-ing her way to out of the building past dozens of armed guards. They didn't even try to make it seem like she was in danger here. She just cuts a swathe through them like she's Wonder Woman or something. This irritates me because she is not Wonder Woman. 

Imagine how much better this scene would have been if Harley were forced to fight her way out with a reasonably human skill set. She'd be getting her ass kicked and just barely escaping by her wits, there might actually be some excitement and danger, and you might even find yourself endeared to this character more by seeing her struggle.

Ah fuck it, that part sucks but the rest of the movie is good so who gives a fuck?
