🎒 Hackweek Project: Inventory, Stores and More!

Hi everyone, Anna here!

Today I’m excited to show you what JĂ©rĂ©mie and I worked on during our hackweek. For those who don’t know what it is, every year at Paralives Studio, we all participate in a special week during which we can work on things that are not necessarily urgent (or even planned for the release). It’s nice because it allows us to work on exciting features without waiting for it to be the top priority! There are also no meetings during that week so it feels good to be “free” to focus on the same thing for a whole week. We don’t have to tackle the big problems and design questions since we always keep our hackweek projects to a small scale.

Keep in mind that all of these features are very early prototypes and may not make it into the early access release.

As always, this post is for Patrons only so please don’t share it, thank you!

Inventory

The main thing we worked on is the inventory! It is not something that we can confidently confirm for early access for now, but it has been considered for a long time and it is the cornerstone that makes a lot of cool other features possible, like:

For now, the inventory is shared amongst people of the same household, because we didn’t want to complexify the feature and because it seemed more practical for the player. However, that might change in the future.

My Para-self wanted a little snack so I made her pick up an apple!  (Keep in mind that the interactions are still a work in progress!)

Since I got two apples, I gifted one to my Jérémie. (Remember that the interactions and placement of the characters while talking with each other are still a work in progress!)

Stores

Stores have been requested very frequently by the community and they are a big part of what makes a town feel alive and why players might want to wander in the open world more frequently. JĂ©rĂ©mie developed a special display stand that can be placed in a shop and displays items on sale! Every day, the items on the display stands change, so if you want to redecorate your house on a budget with this secondhand furniture shop, you’ll have to be patient to catch good deals!

Mustache Man made a great deal with this dresser!

For now, we only tried it with furniture, but there also could be clothing shops, grocery stores, libraries
 The sky's the limit!

Collectibles

Another feature that we thought would work well with the inventory system is collections. It is always always fun to seek little trinkets and try to collect them all! To do so, JĂ©rĂ©mie created a way to have spots that spawn items randomly in various places around town. For now, you can pick up mushrooms, rocks, or even fishes!

Here is the very first draft at a collectible UI (imagine those are precious gemstones instead of normal rocks!). As you can see, there are several (temporary!) categories of collectibles, and you can see which item you’ve already got in each collection. Also, yes, there’s a top secret category of collectibles that I can’t tell you about yet
 đŸ€«

Another cool idea we wanted to implement for a long time was the collection of movies and books. After reading a book for the first time, you would see it unlocked in the collection interface! This way, it makes it a little more interesting to try and read all the books of the world. There could be a rare book section at the library, where book nerds like Maggie often go to see if they can complete their collection, or maybe some could only be gifted by other Paras! The same could go with movies.

Of course, modders will be able to add a bunch of collection types.

Museum

Last but not least, we added a way to have a museum in the game, where any Para of the town can bring their collectible and admire them. Of course, the museum is grateful for your donations and will give you rewards for specific numbers of items donated!

On the left, you can see our temporary museum donation box, where you can automatically donate all your new collectibles. On the right, you can see that our 3 collectibles from before are automatically displayed! Again, this is really just a prototype and the look of the museum and its stands will greatly improve.

There’s a new icon on the UI to show which collectibles you’ve donated to the museum!

Without any fishes or aquarium items already in the game, we had to be creative to make a functional museum! I hope you like this uncommon cowfish in a scaled-up glass of water!

Obviously, we did not have time to polish all these features in just a week, so there’s still some work to do. For instance, snacks should probably degrade after a while of staying in the inventory, just like food placed in the world would. Additionally, to have a working book reading system, we would probably need the bookshelves to have their own inventory to keep track of what books are in them and maybe have a way of generating random books everyday for the library bookshelves. We have a lot of other examples of improvements on our to-do list but all of these features will have to wait a bit!

What did you think of all these inventory related features?

Do you like to collect things in games?

Tell us what you think!

Personally I enjoyed taking a little break from the build mode to work on this project since I love working on the live mode. I can’t wait to go back to working on it full time! Have a great Friday and an even greater weekend!

i will have two things in my inventory on paralives a stroller for my baby and a bike for myself

mollie

I absolutely looooove in game collectables!!!! Adding books and movies as a collection list would be so sick!! and I love the idea of randomly generating library books

Chance Fragodt

Poderiam acrescentar cinema no jogo ?

Estefani Oliveira

I'm loving everything I see! A suggestion for the inventory incon since it seems a bit out of place - you could do a garage door with a few boxes or for an individual inventory, instead of just boxes, you could do a purse or satchel or something of the sort. Maybe an option later down the road to choose a specific purse that fits your style? For collectibles- I know this is getting overzealous- but maybe a way to also collect clay for those who want to do pottery in game? I would love to be able to sit my para down and mix clay or star a piece of art !

MexiVenus (Juno)

LOVE IT!!!! The museum idea is BRILLIANT!!! The shop looks fun, too! I second what JP said about clothing stores! That would be INCREDIBLE!!!

Eleanor Swan

Oh fantastic, this is so cute, I love collecting things and I love natural history museums (I'm hoping the museum will be like this), plus a secret collection will be so fun to find, I can't wait to try this out and help my game museum build up its collection, so exciting! Also, the idea of degrading food and other perishable items in the inventory is great. :)

Christina Ozeki

I absolutely love to explore and collect things in games, that's a major motivator for me! So I'd love to get all of the features shown here early in the game. However, take your time to do it right. It would be great if you could make a robust collecting system in Paralives that was more interesting than in other life sim games--just like you have rethought so many other aspects of life simming.

Slippers

Sorry if it sounds I'm suggesting too much.

Thabiso Ptk💚

Also for the picking apple animation, I suggest the hand aim a little higher and for short Paras(kids), to do a little jump when getting the apple.

Thabiso Ptk💚

Clothing stores would be amazing. Take the concept from the sims 2 and everyone will fall in love with it.

Thabiso Ptk💚

Absolutely love the idea of the collections and museums!

BooDotBoo .

Stores! Especially the idea of the second hand furniture store. And the museum being actually useful! This game is gonna be amazing.

Thaaeroprincess87

is that like letting the cat out of the bag?

Faoiltearna Sims

omg yes, I love this! Weekly flea markets would be a great solution 😍 not too often and not too rarely, maybe you could even sell your pictures or collected items there yourself. I absolutely love the idea â€ïžâ€đŸ”„

Josephin01

I adore the idea of a museum where you can collect things and donate them and receive rewards! I find that incentivized collecting/museum systems -similar to animal crossing or stardew valley- really get me excited to explore those functions and the world, unlike non-incentivized collecting -like in the sims. I hardly pay attention to the collectables in the sims!

Ariel O'gwin

In Sims 3 you could drag an item between sims through their portraits, which I find convenient. We could have a way to select multiple items and drag them between Paras. I really would prefer individual inventories since I like my characters to exchange goods between each other.

Pri

I just love it ❀❀

Nathalie Carluccio

Give me an inventory and I will collect things, give me a museum and I will collect every thing

just a little bawn

I honestly love the inventory system especially as it pertains to stores. I would love to build a mall and have my teen sims go shopping after school.

Trinity Smith

I would like a Miki collection, since Chloe and Sonia already put so much effort into making so much Miki stuff. Or just like a mini figure/doll collection, I have some myself and it would be nice to collect them in the game too.

Kateƙina Králová

For the collections I'd love to have a Card Game Collection in Paralive like Pokémon Cards. You could buy packs of random cards and exchange them with your friends. And you could even play with them. It doesn't have to be a minigame like Gwent in The Witcher, but I think it would be fun to talk to other Paras to ask for playing the card game or even make tournaments. *.*

TyraStar74

Something like a flea market to buy used equipment would be cool too.

TyraStar74

Oh my God, let the cow out of the jar

Christoph Frederik

The furniture shop idea is amazing!

LightDeficient

Love the museum feature. It'll be a great place to use for storytelling and as storage/museum /gallery for generational play.

phoenix grey

I always like things that bring the world around us to life. I like the idea of museums, but I hope that each type of lot has a real interest and is not useless in game. Each lots should have purposes. I think the museum could be used for school outings. It would give them a use beside giving them collectibles and make the school system more variable while still being a rabbit hole. I also like the idea of a library and a bookshop. For the library, I hope we can have library cards and borrow books (or even films). If we have a skill for writing, it would be great to be invited to a bookshop for a signing and to be able to find our book in the library later (maybe we can give it to the library as a gift or if our Para becomes famous, the library will get the books itself). Merci pour l'update ! Bon mercredi à toute l'équipe !

Yunahara

We're going to have STORES in the base game? OMG. Paralives always makes me happy! I can't wait to see the custom strip malls and business lots people come up with. I feel like the fridge magically restocking itself in other life sim games is immersion breaking and not very realistic. I wanna see people fighting over the last Toilet paper pack at the stores like they do in real life. we need that everyday drama :D

JossGun Shipper

I can see the practical use of that system, though. While unrealistic, time is one thing that life sims have to speed up drastically for good gameplay. Having to wait for one para in your household to hand over an item to another could be inconvenient for the player if they quickly want to get things done. I do see the benefit of a per-para inventory in terms of it getting less easily cluttered (especially kids having items that are clearly for adults) and for realism, but I can see how the pros could outweigh the cons here

Maxx

The store idea is really, really good! I am already thinking about all the challenges that could arise from that... second-hand only, for example. I would heavily plead to make the inventory and collections system per-Para though. I don't feel like it is too confusing. In fact, I think it would be wayy more confusing if one of my paras could pick an apple on one side of the neighborhood and another immediately pulls it out of nowhere in their house to make an apple pie, for example.

Lianna

So loving all these ideas and cannot wait for the game. I would also think that having an old-timey General store like in Little house on the prairie would be awesome for playing back in time.

TnT_Terry

I love love love the idea of the stores!! And how different items can change, it makes the world feel more explorable and alive as you said, and I really can’t wait to see what it’s all about in time đŸ€—

Becky

Omg...to think these were merely side projects!?! You had me at discount furniture store! And while I don't necessarily tend to gravitate towards collecting items just for the sake of having it, the museum feature reminded me of Coral Island (and I love Coral Island), and that would be so awesome to have in game! And grocery stores?? đŸ„čđŸ„č💕#takemymoney

ZLoves

Yesss, that would be such a fun idea!! I love thinking of the paras running to grab some essential pieces before they have their first night in their new home lol. It would be so fun to see our paras race to get groceries before it's too late.

Trisha

I'm glad that you all had some time to switch gears and work on new ideas! I personally adore the idea of having a museum to display the collected items, many other games that implemented this in the past (like the Elder Scrolls 4 Shivering Isles DLC) had me spend an unreasonable amount of time searching the world and paying attention to the smallest item. It also gives players more reason to travel to a museum and truly interact with this community lot type!

Andra

What if, when your para reads or watches something, they will feel a certain way about it based on their personality and interests. And when they get a chance to discuss a book they've read for instance, they might gain positive or negative relationship with their conversation partner(s) depending on the opinion they formed on it, and perhaps discover personality traits or interests of other paras through these interactions. I'm no game dev, but I imagine some kind of a tag system could work for implementing something like this?

Heidi MĂ€kinen

The second-hand stuff you buy in store is the same "quality" of the new stuff you buy? I was thinking maybe you pay less money for it, but it has more chance to break, or you have to repair/clean it more often, or it gives less "furniture points" to a room? Just some ideas. I love the inventory and the stores projects!

Chiara

I personally love the collections the most! Makes each Para unique and gives them and the player a personal charming quest. ❀ I see that it could still be quite some effort until you are completely satisfied with the result, as you said. But so far, good job. I hope you can keep working on itđŸ€žđŸŒ

chantal99

Wow, I feel like collectibles is such a next level feature, thank you for focusing on it for the hackaton! One thing I love about collectibles is that you grow to learn your environment and then you know where that good mushroom spot is or that wild orchard. Or that moment of randomly coming across a spawn point - it just makes the world feel alive. I never have been one to try collect everything but this museum setup sounds intriguing, since maybe the museum would attract paras and interactions connected to the hobby. Either way very cool. Also, I loved the selection of plants demonstrated in past posts but trees producing fruit that we can pick? I just love that, just so lively and lovely. Plus the perfect setup for a scavanging para gameplay haha

Space Giraffe

I love the idea of buying furniture and clothes in Stores at a reduced price, I'd think it would be nice to have some fancier stuff that is exclusive to some sort of designer shop. I think collecting movies and books would be awesome, especially if it's tied to some sort of interest or club thing, like Paras that are interested in books, movies or videogames can form a club where they talk about them. Or talking about a certain book/movie/game being a togethercard when the Para has read them. It would also be cool if you'd have the choice to read, watch or play new releases together, when the game generates them. An empty shelf where you can put in your collection would also be really awesome. I am a bit torn on the Museum though, I love the Museum in Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley, like mailing Eugen the raw fossils and then getting them back clean a few days later was always great. Me and my sister were always really excited about that, however we also never liked catching bugs and buying Portraits. ^^ One on Hand I think the idea of completing the Museum is lovely, especially when doing it across several Paras, makes this a cool Community Effort that really elevates that feel of the game, on the other hand I think it runs the risk of being kind of repetitive, especially across several towns, so I'd have the fear that I'd end up with a lot of empty Museums. What could be done to counter that would of course be to have specialised Museums, or different Museums for different towns in general. The starting town seems to be more rural, so having a bit of everything makes sense, but maybe when there's a Seaside Town the Museum is more specialized in Fish and Boats, or if there will ever be some big city, the museum there is more interested in Art pieces. I think that would be a cool idea and not only make collecting for the museums less samy, but also make every pregenerated town more interesting/unique. But I kinda doubt that the amount of extra work makes this idea really feasable. :D One quick edit: I think another way to counteract having empty Museums for people that don't want to collect the stuff for it, either because it's their onehundreths save file or because they don't like it in general, would be an option to donate money to the museum. Basically to sponsor some sort of expidition where they find new stuff. EDIT EDIT: Collectibles as Heirlooms would be cool.

Fenriswolfer

I love all of these especially the stores! The small in depth features like this make a game feel so much more immersive and alive!

LadyJ

It would be so cool if you have the job of an archeologist/palaeontologist and you’re able to find arrow heads and dinosaurs bones hinting at the previous history of paraworld 😂 and the display them in the museum and get money. The precious stones as a geologist etc

Rin Canono

I also hope it will be possible to introduce it, although I'll keep playing the game if it isn't.

Lucie Baha

Exactly. Individual inventories of some form, even if they are just back packs or carried bags are really essential in my opinion. In fact, just carried bags plus furniture storage (instead of inbuilt inventories) would actually be great! I'd be quite happy with that, because it's realistic anyway. And yes, they are considering separate money for after release. Individual money is seen as not essential, and may not be for many people, but it is pretty essential if you want to play with people living together who are not family which, although I love family game play too, is a part of my game play. I like to have grown children go out and live separately for a while before they get married, because it makes for variation of game play lifestyles, but without separate money, they'll just have to live with their family until their are married, get married and move straight out into their new family home. It severely limits game play. It means we can only play with families and single person households. So I really hope they do implement it because it would totally change the game and allow us to have all sorts of households (flatmates, old people's homes, boarding houses, homeless people's accommodation, holiday hotels, even University Dorm if they implement Universities some day), and not only families. Plus, I want to be able to do pocket money for children and part time jobs for teens!

Fran Smith

yes i hope it won't be a big technical challenge to introduce individual inventories and for separate money it will be a big technical challenge for paralives team and that's why they are considering to introduce individual money after early access.

Lucie Baha

I hope it will be possible to do individual inventories in the future, because it will be more realistic and won't complicate the task at all, and it will be like the paras' portfolio.

Lucie Baha

Will collectables found be listed per Para or per household? I'm hoping it will be per Para.

Fran Smith

They said this might change in the future.

Lucie Baha

Collectables! I love collectables in games. I'd particularly love collectables if they had a lot of variation - different kinds of collectable found in different places (eg stamps could be found on envelopes but not on the ground). Ideas for more collectables: * coins: could be found on the ground, bought from a bank (if one exists ingame one day) or online (probably with random and rarenesses, different ones available each day). * stamps: could be found on mail, bought from postman (probably with random and rarenesses - different ones available each day) and you'd actually have to catch the postman on his rounds, found in random library books on opening. And of course, commonly found in other games, but still good! * gems: found on the ground, dug up at various sites around the world, fished out of the water. *fossils: found on the ground, found by pets and brought home. I love the mushrooms idea - I used to play a game that had an awesome mushroom finding mechanic - A Tale in the Desert, way back in the early 2000s. Way ahead of it's time, that game was. Mushrooms all had a preferred growing environment(rocky/sandy, height from sea level)/season moon state/time of day and rarity and number in a group. Their location constantly changed and finding them was really a challenge - people running all over the map trying to find them based on all these factors. It was wonderful and I still really miss that depth of mechanic. I've never seen a mechanic that had anything like this depth since! I know this is far out of the scope of this game, but worth the trip down memory lane. :-) And all collectables could be swapped between Paras, when they have found more than one. Also, this could also be part of the conversation card system. If both Paras have a collection of the same item, they could talk about it to increase relationship. Or vise versa. I love the general collecting for museums commonly found in farming games, too. My only concern is, that this tends to be a once-off thing. Once an item is found for the museum, that's it. I, and I know other people, like to play our life sims through many generations. This is generally limited to be useful only for the first generation. What game play do museums have AFTER everything has long been collected? What then? I used to just have every character have their own collections in that other (number 3) game, which extended collecting game play to future generations, instead of being finished on the first generation, with no point after that. Also INDIVIDUAL inventories! I can't imagine a life sim where there aren't individual inventories at all. It would make gifting effectively useless. There's no point of giving to someone who has access to the same inventory. Or it would just be a massive way to cheat - just give that same apple over and over again. And when I move my grown children, now adults, into a new home, that means they can't take anything with them. And money is shared too. How will that work? Will they just move out with the clothes on their back? That other game had no separate money either, so most people just bought expensive items and placed them in the moving person's inventory so they could sell them later, and thus create the illusion of some money taken with them - not great, but a workaround. I also want to play with flatmates too, which is already not really feasible with shared money, but shared inventory would make it just completely unviable. Family inventories make sense - food, soap, candles, miscellaneous shared stuff etc, but we need individual inventories in some form, even if they are only in the form of closets and chests and backpacks - that would be fine, actually.

Fran Smith

That works well if the player can manually set what books are on the shelf. But if library shelves, like the retail display, are set to random - regardless of the label - then that means the library would functionally need only one shelf, and there would be no way to narrow down what could be a tedious search near the end of collecting. Imagine a library organized like a rummage sale. Marking each book with a genre/category and then telling each retail-shelf what kind to display would help players find specific books and give a purpose to multiple shelves beyond aesthetics. Though I get that's a lot of coding and not priority.

BonaparteBardithion .

Instead of setting a genre limiting thing for a bookshelf, which would involve unnecessary coding on a team that is trying to make everything them implement count widely in game play, why not simply enable bookshelf labels so that people can label bookshelves themselves, including library bookshelves. Much easier, and much more functional.

Fran Smith

The other problem with just having a shared household inventory is gifting. It basically makes gifting useless. Mike takes a gift out of the shared inventory and gives it to Mary, who was the Para who initially found it and put it into the shared inventory in the first place. Or even if she wasn't the one who initially found it, she had access to it anyway and could have just taken it herself. Gifting is completely useless if everyone shares an inventory. It doesn't work. We NEED individual inventories.

Fran Smith

Or library books have a separate label, and have ongoing fees attached to them if they are not returned after a given time.

Fran Smith

Oh I love that! I really like the idea of a museum being something that's actually interactive rather than just being a static place. I think if this gets implemented in the game it would be cool if every item that got donated had a little sign from which we can learn who donated it! Maybe have some characters have a wish to donate to the museum to give an incentive to collect items? It could be the museum sending them a special item after a while, some money or maybe just that the para can learn some new things! I also love the idea of having functional stores in the end (because I would love to actually have to grocery shop). I did have some ideas for stores in the game! I think some of these things would be cool for a potential store feature: - big items like furniture which wouldn't logically fit into the inventory could be delivered next day or the same day via delivery while things like book, groceries others etc. go into the inventory - clothing stores! (I would love that specifically after a possible feature for multiple outfits is introduced) It's so much more realistic to actually have to buy outfits and it would give players and incentive to earn money to spend - maybe have special items you can only get in store that don't show up on the usual build catalogue? I think that would give an incentive to explore the open world to it's fullest potential :) As always, great work! I love the hack week results. They might not be fleshed out but it's honestly amazing to see what y'all can do within a week!

lias

I loved It, the possibilities are incredible. Stores, gift giving, libraries... I really hope that those funcionalities are implementei in the game, even If It's after early access.

Panthro Samah

I love the idea of a book collection as well!

Jessica Tourtellotte

Cowfish cannon in game when

Snowchimes

I think having exclusive furniture, clothes, etc that could only be sold in, in-games stores would be neat! Almost like animal crossing. It would def entice people to go out into the world to find things you can’t find in build mode :)

Madison Rains

The book reading collection sounds really good! In Sims, it felt really boring reading all kinds of books that didn't do much other than giving fun, and they all felt the same. The writing skill's book naming didn't feel meaningful either and I just put in random names. With collectible books, book series could also be possible to read, which I would love so much! And the books would feel more unique and different, as they would be counted differently for the collection. And the really old books could be the rarest ones!

Renikee

I love all of it. The theme with the museum reminds me of the Animal Crossing feature and I really loved that. I think the inventory solution is great, but I wonder what happens if a household member moves out. Can this household member not take anything with them? And I would love a second-hand shop, general opportunities to live greener, so being able to buy used technical equipment, clothing, baby, children and animal products would be great. I definitely love every single idea in this post and would appreciate anything!

Josephin01

I love that idea!

BreakingGaia

Personally, I don't see why the two have to be exclusive. What I know from personal experience is that I *hate* when developers try to force players to play a certain way. I love the game experience of going to a store to buy stuff, but that means that I as the player have to also make those stores or get them from others (in a sort of gallery fashion like in Sims). Sometimes, if I'm just playing, it's nice to be able to open the build mode and buy whatever I need. Especially when I'm building a specific house for a character I've created, and I'm trying to deck it out like they would have it. I think that there's no reason why everything can't already be unlocked in build mode (for a cost) for people who dislike retail systems, but also have enough gameplay to make retail systems interesting for those who would buy 100% of their para's things from a store in town, instead of forcing the players who enjoy build mode purchases to use the retail system or vice versa, which usually turns players off from using it at all. I feel like the only limitations here should be made by individual players, and since there's the ability to mod nearly everything, someone could make a mod that blocks build mode purchases if a player wanted that hard restriction, if not the developers put in a sort of toggle themselves.

Naitomeatori

A multipurpose plaque would be good for this and putting in front of public art like statues or on park benches.

BonaparteBardithion .

I kind of like the idea of separate tags for read and owned. Like a Para can borrow a book and like it, so the owner will gift them the whole series but it ends up sitting on the shelf a while unread. But there would also need to be limits on where a non-owned book could go to keep it from getting tagged as "owned". Like maybe a library book would only be in a Para's hand, never in the inventory, and it would need to be left on the library lot or disappear after a certain amount of time.

BonaparteBardithion .

What if, when a Para reads a book or watches a movie, it unlocks a short written story for you to read (if it's a book), or a short video for you to watch (if it's a movie). You could read/watch it through the book/movie collection UI and I think it would make it really worth it and exciting to read/watch them all!

Tauras Giedraitis

This is awesome! Now that I see a museum, can I make a suggestion to be able to add town history. Like be able to write a blurb about the donation on display that other paras can read about.

BreakingGaia

I mentioned genre tags for sorting reasons in another comment, but the same subcategories would also serve well for likes/dislikes. Maybe a Para would autonomously look for shelves with those genres/categories in a library.

BonaparteBardithion .

I adore the idea of collecting movies and books. It would be cool if the Parafolk could not be a fan of some books or movies

Sarah

Maybe there could be a separate category for player generated novels that gives rewards based on how many you've read instead of specific titles.

BonaparteBardithion .

The easiest solution to this is to not penalize players (such as losing achievements) for using cheats that unlock content or to have a toggle for displaying unlockable items. That gives people the option to access content freely while still encouraging engaging with the retail system. Other games have also had unlimited options at initial character creation, but once the game is started you have to buy the rest.

BonaparteBardithion .

Love these ideas! The movie/book collections sound so fun! I think it would be cool if it showed you not only which ones your para has read, but which ones you own too! Like you're trying to read them all and physically collect them all! (Bonus if I could make a library with all the books my para collects!)

Katie Bellissimo

Larger items like furniture in The Sims being limited to the household inventory did make it harder to bring furniture with when households split (ie a teen going to college). It'd be nice to put those things into a personal inventory for those situations. On the other hand, I understand realism players might not like putting a piano or queen size bed into their pocket.

BonaparteBardithion .

Yes! All of this is amazing!

Trisha Feder

I LOVEEEE the shops and the museum! The possibilities with the stores are almost endless: furniture, clothes, plants, books, you name it! It definitely makes the world feel so much more interactive and alive. It would also be so fun to have your paras be able to purchase a ticket for the museum and tour around! Will there be cheats to build on community lots?? Totally want to build my own museum 😅

My main problem with the shared inventory is that in the sims I used the individual inventories as a type of savings account the sim could take with them when they moved from one household to another.

Collecting is one of my favorite things to do, so it was exciting to see this! Big yes to individual inventories for collecting purposes!

Xo.Noe

I wonder how it would work to have shops around the world when all of those objects are available in build mode or in Paramaker (there even without having to pay?). Maybe you could integrate furniture or clothing that's not initially available in those menus, but I don't know if that wouldn't also limit freedom or be too complicated.

Kira W.

I wonder if the secret collectible will be postcards -- including using the art from ones you've sent out to Patreon supporters. :)

Jennifer

Omg I love this I have been praying you guys add shopping and stores!!! Please please please let us make custom stores and let use choose what the store sells. Please let us make custom collectibles too!! Hope you guys split up the inventories eventually but no rush with that. =)

Succukitty

Oooh... for the books and movie collections, I think it would be fun to have multiple different series for your para to watch/read/collect/obsess over, in addition to the standalone books/movies. However, it does seem odd to make reading every book/watching every movie ever made into an achievable goal - in real life we have countless of each, and people make new ones all the time. Will the writing skill, if there is one (please), allow your para to create new books? Would these new books get included among the collectibles? I'd love to see the gameplay-created books show up in libraries and bookstores if your para chose to publish it. Maybe even earn royalties off it! Also yes please @ the individual inventories.

S. Hiltunen

LOVE LOVE LOVE all of these ideas! Especially gifting things, second hand stores (and stores in general), libraries and book/movie collections!

BekkiRoss

Love this!

Chiara

Having an inventory is a nice QOL feature that also opens up the possibility for new actions like gifting. Even if it's not in the EA release I'd love to see it implemented in the final version. I also support having personal inventories along with a household one, especially for smaller items or instruments. Regarding books and movies: It'd be cool if there was a theater building (even just a rabbit hole) where you could watch a random film each week. If bookshelves get inventories, it would also be nice if you could set a genre for a given book and then set a bookshelf for a specific genre. That would make trying to narrow down the read-book search easier and make the library stacks feel more varied.

The museum is so animal crossing coded! Loooove it!

Maxx

Such exciting work! I do disagree that only having a household inventory is more practical for a player. What if a para wants to gift something to another para in the same family? It wouldn’t really make sense to give them something from a singular household inventory, which is why individual inventories, in my opinion, need to be implemented. Additionally, it would be useful if a para moves out to be able to send them away with a few items (like furniture) to jumpstart their new life - another reason for a personal inventory.

Matthew Geller

I would never get bored! I've always wanted something like what Paralives team is creating

Plutonian Ambassador to Earth

This is Sims meets Animal Crossing! I'm so excited!!! Eeeeee!

Plutonian Ambassador to Earth

I love this. I will jump on the individual inventory wagon. One reason is when my para moves out, I would them to take certain things instead of buying it again. Also it drives me crazy when my sim get a career reward and it is in the household inventory and I cannot take it with them when they move. So I just hope that maybe personal inventories can be a future project...thank you for all your hard work. Always makes my friday to hear ding that a new paralives post has arrived.

Maxayn Henderson

This is all so great! I really hope this all makes it in. Im surprised inventory is side project. Very cool seeing all the progress 👍

Esme Rodriguez

it will be much better if the bought stuff from the store being delivered to the house, and people have to move them to their places.

ShayminNasakura

An Animal Crossing-type museum collection? Oh my goodness, congrats an automatically adding hundreds of hours of playtime for me!

Sarah

i love how you take time to implement the features in the game and don’t rush it

Lula Insel

Oh that's a nice idea with the museum â˜ș

Sarah

I love the ideas around books! Being able to keep track of which books your Para has read, books in the library being refreshed so you never know which books you'll find there - amazing! I'm not that crazy about collectibles but I really like the innovations you've brought to the system. I'm so glad you were able to work on these features, and I look forward to seeing how they progress. Thank you so much for sharing!

Lane Brettschneider

Super impressive to see how much you developed in only a week. I really, really hope the thrift store makes it into the game at some point because that's a genius idea! I would find it so satisfying to buy things used instead of new, just like in real life, haha. I could see a system where more eco-friendly Paras get boosts of some kind from buying or owning used items, while more materialistic Paras suffer from it. Agree that bookcases, etc. having inventories would be good. Have you ever played Apico? The way that game handles object inventories is neat, you should check it out.

Nina

Oh this is just bloody amazing! I'm especially exited for the collectable museum. I never really bother in the *cough*s4-game*cough* because I already have all the achievements for it. But having my Para's collect and get rewarded for them that would be amazing. Makes me think a lil of StarDew's way And just everything! I do personally prefer per-Para inventories, but I could always just mod that myself later!!!

Star Zoë

Thanks for the reply, Anna ! "It's not the inventory UI, it's the collectible UI" Aaaah, that's what happens when you're dumb, you misunderstand screenshots XD Silly lady. It makes a lot more sense now that you mention it that we don't have it in our inventory anymore. "It's not really the same system! It's possible that wardrobes don't have a real inventory" Oh, right, because most clothes will be available at all times, and only a minority will need to be unlocked, right ? So it's a different system. "the icons we used in this post are temporary icons" Damn it, it makes it very hard to guess what that could be XD

ladyteruki

(from Anna) Thank you for your kind comment! - "WAIT, so even after donating it, it still appears in your Para's inventory ? That's interesting. Does it mean you can retrieve it ?" > It's not the inventory UI, it's the collectible UI! So when you donate an item, you don't have it in your inventory anymore or can't retrieve it. You have a special UI to see all the things you've been collected - "I suppose you're one stone throw away from wardrobes offering a similar system for clothes, I suppose ?" > It's not really the same system! It's possible that wardrobes don't have a real inventory, but when you click on it to change your clothes, it will just show you all unlocked clothes from the Paramaker, but it might depends on the character who made the interaction. - "Let me guess, the icon is not in Chloe's previous devblog post ?" > No, the icons we used in this post are temporary icons!

Anna

This is such a good feature! I love the in-depth look at this!! :) It warms my heart that this game will have collectibles because I LOVE collecting things in game. Cannot wait to see the redacted collectible ♄

SimplyDeeSims

I love collecting things so much! And I love the idea of displaying them in a museum!

Dawn Anemone

Similarly, in That Other Game 2ℱ, I'd always have the parents work hard to buy an expensive piece of furniture, then I'd place it in their YA child's inventory so they'd be able to sell it later and have some funds when they'd move out (for college or otherwise). Since it was not possible to donate money from individual to individual, that was the next best thing !

ladyteruki

And moving into a new place and shopping for furniture because your previous place was smaller ! So many options, really. But yeah, groceries is the priority imho. Oh the desperation of finding out the fridge is empty on a Sunday when everything is closed !

ladyteruki

I've never been big on collectibles but you have some interesting ideas here. But an inventory is a must for sure! :) I'm really looking forward to more live mode updates as well!!

Noeba

(from Anna) Thank you! No, it's not planned to have a weight limit for now :) I don't know if it will be possible to carry a vehicle though!

Anna

Hi Anna ! Thanks for this post, it's so exciting ! I understand that it's still WIP/unconfirmed/to be balanced/etc., but inventory is something I'm really interested in. I know it's also a controversial topic among players, but I love having individual inventories, having to buy everything my character(s) consume, and even having to think about storage. So this is pretty much a dream hackweek project for me to read about ! I'm not big on collectibles if they're just for the sake of completion, but if the collectibles have a use, it's usually different. So for instance I would probably not collect rocks, but I'd collect the different fish if I can cook them and they all have a different flavor (for instance a Para having preferences, or a bonus of some kind). Obviously the store is very interesting, and this early version already looks pretty smooth. A lot of the improvement feels cosmetic from this point on (like display stands, ability to maybe pay a person instead of paying at the stand, etc.), but the essential is here. Which is, wow, in just a week ?! "There’s a new icon on the UI to show which collectibles you’ve donated to the museum" WAIT, so even after donating it, it still appears in your Para's inventory ? That's interesting. Does it mean you can retrieve it ? "Another cool idea we wanted to implement for a long time was the collection of movies and books" THAT IS SUCH A COOL IDEA ! And so modern, too. I do that ! I do it for the TV shows I watch, at least (...are there TV shows in Paralives ?). Also having "unlocked" a book/movie/(show?) could be used for Together Cards, letting two people discuss popculture they both have consumed ! "snacks should probably degrade after a while of staying in the inventory, just like food placed in the world would" YEEES. Food decay is good. "we would probably need the bookshelves to have their own inventory to keep track of what books are in them" Once you have that system is place, I suppose you're one stone throw away from wardrobes offering a similar system for clothes, I suppose ? And a toy chest for kids/pets toys, a cookbook for recipes, etc., the system works with a lot of things once it's there. "Of course, modders will be able to add a bunch of collection types" I really, really hope to soon see a recap of everything that modders will be able to do in Paralives. I've been trying to keep a mental list and it blows my mind how it keeps getting longer, and there's always something I hadn't considered. "I gifted one to my JĂ©rĂ©mie" Aw ! ^_^ "Also, yes, there’s a top secret category of collectibles that I can’t tell you about yet" ...Interesting. Very interesting. Let me guess, the icon is not in Chloe's previous devblog post ?

ladyteruki

Would absolutely love this feature! And preferably an inventory per para, rather than per household. Or both. Could be a personal inventory that allows a para to carry (reasonably sized) items with them and a household 'inventory' that's a physical place in the house, like a storage room or attic (could just be a rabbit hole door). And give some items their own inventory, such as a fridge, freezer, bookcase, toybox, and closets. It could also serve as a great way to create a modern hope chest for young paras leaving the family home (with perhaps an option to 'collect all items in this room' for their childhood room to take with them).

Zedef

Soo hyped about stores! The rotational stock is genius 👌

tivicloud

Heck yeah, collectibles!

CzechMorticia

I love the Museum being inspired by Animal Crossing-like games with the donations from your collections! A very fun and smart way of getting players to enjoy collecting unique items. But I'm very excited about the cowfish, I'd love cows in the town, and you guys kind of have to make a proper cowfish now for the collectibles...🐄🐟 But as always I'm very excited about it all, it's so fun to see this game grow and all of your ideas and talent ❀

Amanda Hannu NĂ€ckros

I LOVE IT!! LOVE IT! LOVE IT!! LOVE IT!!! I've wanted a collection system since I heard about this game because I loved it so much in TS3. I... there are no words! 😭 ❀

Zahlea

YES!! The store and museum omg I'm so excited!! đŸ„°

Rachel

I love the idea of being able to donate to the museum. In other life sims, I never saw any reason to actually collect anything but this would make it a lot of fun!

Rosirose

SOOOO excited for this feature!!! I love collectibles in games, and i feel like it makes having an open world all the more engaging - like a real purpose to get your Paras out and about. Having little, silly objectives like these enrich the stories of our little guys ❀ inventory is a total must for sure

kayakwizardry

I absolutely love the idea of a book collection! đŸ„° As an avid reader it sounds really fun, although I'd never be able to make a list of my own collection, way too much work đŸ€

Eva-Maria

I'm so excited to hear about shops!! I would love to go grocery shopping especially. An interactive experience with it would be nice but just being able to go and restock our fridge sounds so nice!! The furniture shop is another cool idea and could be fun to add into playing families with shopping for nursery furniture!

Trisha

Awesome update! Will there be a mass or weight limit on the items our paras can carry in their inventory (carry a vehicle in inventory)? I like the store update though, I hope for an engineering or science skill to add with it (to sell crafted items).
