A Deep Dive In Our Design Process For Social Interactions
Added 2024-06-28 13:54:07 +0000 UTCHello everyone! Jérémie here this Friday to do a deep dive into a core aspect of the game’s Live Mode, social interactions. I’ll talk a bit about the whole process, from our original goals, to the ideas we’ve considered and prototyped, the Together Card System, and more into the future! By the end of this post, I hope you’ll have learned a bit about where we’re coming from on that side of the game and where we’re going with it! As usual, this post is for Patrons only, so please do not share it where you shouldn’t! :D
🦸♂️ Paralives at Montreal Comiccon
But before we get into our main subject for today, a small announcement: Paralives will be at the Montreal Comiccon from July 5 to July 7! Along with 24 other indie game developers from Montreal, we will have a table with two computers there where people will be able to test an alpha version of the build mode. This will be yet another opportunity for us to watch people play the game so that we can take notes on the blockers they have while playing and the bugs that they encounter. Come say hi if you were planning to be at the Comiccon!
⚠️ Please note: Some of you might be wondering why we don’t send the game to you Patrons so that you can test it and share your feedback. The main reason is that Steam forbids game developers to charge money on other platforms to give access to a game before its release - including through Patreon pledges. Another reason is that it’s better for us to watch a few people play in person because we can see their reactions and ask questions in real time. Setting this up with many many Patrons would be less efficient and difficult, logistics-wise. We’re extremely grateful for your support though and we can’t wait for you to play Paralives!
👨👩👦 Social Interactions: Our Goals
From the very beginning, we had a few core pillars to work with for social interactions. We needed the whole thing to allow flexibility while not overwhelming, synergise with other game modules and work with two or twenty characters being part of a single interaction. There were also a few minor goals like giving the overall system a sense of progression and not showing too much text, amongst other things.
This is usually how we start designing a new aspect of the game, starting with core ideas that we often extrapolate from the core design pillars of the module (in this case, live mode) or the game as a whole.
First Prototype: Conversation System
The first system we came up with was chat bubble-based that looked like a modern chat system. You would keep the whole history of the conversation, choose answers, get replies and maybe even manage multiple group conversations, all in that interface.
Back in March 2023, we got this version working fairly quickly, so we could test how things worked
We quickly abandoned this prototype because while it had some interesting qualities, we felt it didn’t meet our goals enough. It would’ve been a lot of text to read, a lot of choices to make and it would’ve been quite hard to generate enough content for it to feel sufficient. It also didn’t allow for much roleplaying by the players, because if things are written down straightforwardly, it’s hard to make up a story in your mind that contradicts what’s on your screen.
From Conversations To Cards
We took some time to take a step back and answer a lot of questions. What is the ultimate goal of the social interaction system? How much player input do we want to require here? How do we manage progression through interactions? How repetitive can the choices be? It took us a fair bit of time and a lot of meetings, but we arrived at a system that answered all these questions.
Original mock up for the Together Card system. We usually use Google Docs for our design documents, but sometimes we just draw our mockups on paper too! The Together Card system arose from this kind of sketch.
The Together Card System
What we have right now has a lot of potential and accomplishes all the goals we had set out to meet when we started working on the social interactions for Paralives. You’ve seen it in this past post and in our Live Mode reveal video. Here are some examples alongside explanations of why this works well.
Without a lot of words, it’s easier to imagine what is being said, and it’s easy to see which characters are involved in a card.
Some of these are a bit silly and probably won’t be in the final product, but we can have cards appear based on where characters are, what info they might be hiding or their skills.
Looking To The Future
The system is a work in progress and it connects to everything else we’re making for the live mode. We need enough cards and situations to cover basic gameplay scenarios - friends, family, coworkers, lovers - and then we’ll build on that foundation to the Early Access release. We want to have surprises, interesting NPC scenarios and more! We can’t wait for you to discover everything about this system when the game is out! :D
Like most of the content in the game, modding support is built-in and you’ll be able to create your own cards as well, if you’re inclined. In the above image I’ve made a little social interaction “Discuss Patreon Post”, as a little joke.
That’s all for me today! Hope this gave you a bit more insight about what we’re doing on that side of the Live Mode! This is our 250th Patreon post, which feels pretty amazing to think about! I’m glad to have you with us on this journey!
Jérémie out!

This is so cool! Just a little request, can there be an option to tell people to leave? I know it’s SO ANNOYING when my Sims get into an awkward conversation because I’m trying to get them to flirt but a little kid just butted in and wants to be included 😭😭😭

2024-09-23 05:20:25 +0000 UTCIn some of the cards I think it makes sense though cause they’re more like a title, where each word would be capitalised. Once it becomes more like a full sentence though I think that’s a bit different.

2024-09-06 16:07:02 +0000 UTCone very small thing, please don't capitalise every word in the final game!! it looks incredible though

2024-07-30 19:55:23 +0000 UTCLove! The only improvement I might request would be a picture representative at the bottom of the card as to what the card does, so you don't always have to read the text but can glance and know what a card is going to do.

2024-07-12 20:30:38 +0000 UTCthe way i understand the concept is that it's less about saying something specific and more about the act of talking itself. You can still steer the conversation in a few more specific directions but for the most part, you're not managing the conversation, you're telling the Paras to chat. This way you're not overwhelmed by the options and sub-options of a pie menu And even more so, you're not pidgeon-holed into a specific script. Also i love that we'll be able to create our own cards so easily.

2024-07-10 20:17:47 +0000 UTCI love this Idea 💡💡 The fact that you use an fictive universal language with the card system is soo good👍❤️❤️. Reading through too many text is tiring and will lead to boredom really quickly.

2024-07-04 06:33:50 +0000 UTCI would love to see conversations with children or infants. Using flashcards is an awesome idea!💞💡

2024-07-04 06:08:41 +0000 UTCAbsolutely love that we'll be able to create our own cards rather easily ! Helps build our own personal world without needing too much helps from modders out there !

2024-07-02 22:51:56 +0000 UTCI have finally finished reading all 250 posts! I subscribed a week ago and I must say I had no clue the game this advanced! My only contact with the game was the first prototypes of 2019 and then the gameplay trailer of 2024. So I actually thought the game was not open world and it might have loading screens! In fact, a lot of people in Reddit agreed with me in that thought, so maybe it would be a good idea to showcase the free world a bit in a public video. In any case, I'm absolutely in love and I can't wait to play the game next year!

2024-07-02 15:52:50 +0000 UTCYeah, that would be awesome. I'm from Brazil, it's impossible to me to travel to Canada just for the convention.

2024-07-02 14:06:27 +0000 UTCThis is a fantastic way to both increase satisfaction levels of the players and also make it easier to build cards that are more flexible. I really like it. And the presentation of it is very well done. I do admit I'd love to be able to try the pre-alpha builds, though as mentioned distribution through steam isn't an option, though I wonder if distribution through Patreon is feasible if it can be exported as a single executable with gigantic banners of "THIS IS A PRE-ALPHA TEST" throughout.
TechPlasma
2024-07-02 00:59:18 +0000 UTCI wish I would live in Montreal or anywhere in Canada so I can go and try the alpha version but sadly I live in UK 😭 Will you by any chance share at least the video with us patrons who weren't able to go to the convention so we can see some glimpse of the alpha version tho? 🥺 I would love to see that

2024-07-01 15:15:13 +0000 UTCI swear my excitement for this game has only continued to build since I heard about it in 2019. I cannot wait to get my hands on it, but also love that you're spending so much time making sure that it's fully thought out :)

2024-06-30 23:47:44 +0000 UTCThe fact that surroundings influence the dialogue choices is one of the most innovative things. Skill choices were there before in other RPGs , but not environment I think. Will sure be fun to pick those picks !

2024-06-30 08:36:23 +0000 UTCI love the card system!! So grated you guys didn't go for the first concept as it could have turns things more limited, despite it works well in RPG games... Seems Paralives gives more thoughtful care about this central aspect of gameplay than the classic preachy "choosing the same interaction to fulfill one bar and gets more interactions available" system, and it's so incredible to discover more about the NPCs lore by this method! Really, reaaaally love it!!
Millena Xavier
2024-06-30 05:10:28 +0000 UTCMaybe a little option to randomize again?? 👀 This could be intersting
Millena Xavier
2024-06-30 04:56:23 +0000 UTCAlthough I agree with you about the gap between interactions may been too much, we can't forget the togetherness system allows our parafolks to comunicate while doing other stuff too! At least, they won't stop to chat while eating or doing push-ups, wich means that instead doing thing all by yourself, the gameplay encourages you to hung out with others =D
Millena Xavier
2024-06-30 04:48:16 +0000 UTCI think its cool that nicknamed exist in the game, and that characters can ask about real names! Unless that's just an npc thing 😅

2024-06-29 10:30:09 +0000 UTCI like the Together Cards much more after reading this post. It's not like I didn't like them before, but I was just unsure and didn't fully understand them before as I haven't really seen a system like that. Now that I understand your vision, I 100% agree that the cards work perfectly with it. I think my only caveat still is the timing. 1h for one interaction is a lot. If a Para sleeps for 8 hours, works for 8 hours, prepares three meals for let's say 2h, that just leaves 6h in a day to do anything else. That's a chance for only 6 meaningful interactions. And let's not forget I probably want to do something else with my Para like develop their skills, explore the world etc. That gives developing relationships this weirdly slow pace. I absolutely agree it shouldn't take a day to be able to marry and be madly in love with or be best friends. But knowing each other 5 years but only having 1 meaningful interaction a year also isn't the best in my opinion, because while the relationship is long, it doesn't feel deep. How about sort of dividing the Together Cards in 2. After half an hour of interaction, youd be able to choose small stake cards like changing the direction from friendly to funny, or strengthening the friendly atmosphere, asking about jobs. But after an hour, you'd get a stronger together cards like First Kiss etc. That way, you have more chances for small interactions, without letting taking the big steps too quickly

2024-06-28 23:50:17 +0000 UTCOh I absolutely love the direction that the together cards are going in. I'm all in on the together cards, they are so different from what we're used to. I also love the fact that we can mod in our own together cards if we'd like

2024-06-28 23:43:53 +0000 UTCThis is what I'm looking forward to the most, the way Paras will socialize and the depth of conversations! I love the card system and remember it from the previous post mentioned. I'm also stoked at how Paras can have convos based on where they are (amongst other things, I'm sure)! I can't wait to see how deep the rabbit hole goes bc modding this will definitely take it to the next level! #TakeMyMoney

2024-06-28 20:54:55 +0000 UTCI loved the mod interface!! It's so easy that I already know how to create a Together Card! Can't wait to make crazy interactions!

2024-06-28 20:10:05 +0000 UTCThank you for the feedback, we will be working on this!
Alex Massé
2024-06-28 20:09:37 +0000 UTCVery interesting post, thank you. Can you "ignore" Together Cards if you choose to? In the video it shows that you have to click on a tiny "!" icon to view them, so I guess yes, if you just want Paras to chat but with no meaningful "impact" in their relationship, you can just avoid clicking and ignore the Together Cards for the moment? edit: I see that this was probably answered in a previous reply: "you can also just leave them be and they will keep talking even if no cards are selected"

2024-06-28 19:32:44 +0000 UTCI am so excited about the comiccon! I literally squealed when I read that!! I absolutely cannot wait to see you guys!! As for the cards, I brought this up before but I really do hope you "uniformise" the way they're written, so that they're all imperative or whatever. Seeing the they next to the ither cards felt weird idk.. Anyways so excited!!!!

2024-06-28 17:37:37 +0000 UTCI like the idea of packs that can be introduced! It's not currently like that though but I'll keep the idea in mind!
Alex Massé
2024-06-28 17:24:43 +0000 UTCSo excited hearing more about live mode! I can really see the potential for expansion with the card system, can’t wait to see it fully in action. One thing I was wondering; since we can create our own cards, can we also create card packs? I think it would be great to make packs around various themes to use when you so desired. Anyways, great work y’all!

2024-06-28 17:13:29 +0000 UTCSounds like I’m going on a 12 hour road trip to Montrèal next week 🤔

2024-06-28 17:08:30 +0000 UTCHonestly love the card system since we can steer the general direction of the relationship but then having the para come up with 3 thoughts makes her feel more autonomous and alive. Plus the card library seems so expandable without a threat of ever becoming an overwhelming option cluster. Very clever!

2024-06-28 17:01:28 +0000 UTCI understand, no worries, thank you for the question and for your support, it's really appreciated :)
Alex Massé
2024-06-28 16:47:43 +0000 UTCOh, just for playtesting! Thank you so much for clarifying! Again, I hope you know this wasn't a complaint at you or a "gotcha" moment or anything. Like I said, 100% support not giving alpha access to patrons. It was just one of those things that it was bothering me that I couldn't figure out or find the answer to. Again, thank you so much for answering. This would have driven me crazy all day.

2024-06-28 16:33:45 +0000 UTCFrom the Steam website: https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/features/playtest "Q: Can I charge for access to my Playtest? A: No - the design of Steam Playtest is for free signups. And since Playtests can be deactivated at any time, it’s not OK to monetize them with in-game transactions, or sell access. If you’re ready to charge money for a work-in-progress version of your game, you should use Steam Early Access." Games like Hades didn't charge money on Kickstarter or Patreon for people to gain access to a playtest. They simply released on another store first which is different and allowed by Steam
Alex Massé
2024-06-28 16:28:55 +0000 UTCIt will be interesting to see what a full conversation with the system looks like.

2024-06-28 16:28:19 +0000 UTCYes! You could do that with the in-game modding tools!
Alex Massé
2024-06-28 16:23:53 +0000 UTCWe are working on ways to reduce these issues and we will be able to share more about that later on :)
Alex Massé
2024-06-28 16:23:38 +0000 UTCIt will have a chance to happen and there will be certain actions that you can do to increase the chances of it happening
Alex Massé
2024-06-28 16:22:58 +0000 UTCYes, for now, characters won't be able to develop relationships on their own but that would be a good option to add in the future!
Alex Massé
2024-06-28 16:22:02 +0000 UTCI'm sorry, this is such a stupid thing to get stuck on because I really don't care about access to the alpha build, but I'm so confused by your comment about Steam forbidding you to sell on other platforms before releasing on Steam. Unless I'm misunderstanding your statement,? Hades, for example, released on Epic a full year before it came to Steam. The Outer Worlds and Among Trees also released on Epic* first. Buckshot Roulette was released itch.io first. (These are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.) And, let me reiterate it, it's fine with me (and I feel I can comfortably say most of us) that you won't give us alpha access. I 100% agree with you that keeping track of play testing would be a nightmare and would probably do more harm than good. So this is not a complaint or demand about alpha access. This is about me being very confused and just really wanting to know the answer and having no luck at all with googling it. *Edited. This originally said Steam but it should have said Epic.

2024-06-28 16:17:24 +0000 UTCA dice to roll an randomized option could be nice, though, Alex :) Some people like the idea of things being organic.

2024-06-28 15:49:07 +0000 UTCIt's probably best to have clarification for that, but it's been my assumption that any and all mods will be shared via the Steam Workshop, not just furniture or clothes.
ladyteruki
2024-06-28 15:29:42 +0000 UTCTbh I always saw the hourly thing as sort of a conversation direction change. I don’t think it was intended to feel like a one hour joke, to me i imagined it was like when one random off topic joke shifts the entire conversation or something

2024-06-28 15:23:40 +0000 UTCIt would be cool if there were a way to export a pack of custom Together Cards for others to download. Maybe pair it with custom items and skills.

2024-06-28 15:23:20 +0000 UTCCan we override the cards that are currently in the game? Like if I wanna make a medieval or regency themed mod and don't want modern speech in it.
Thaaeroprincess87
2024-06-28 15:10:51 +0000 UTCLooks interesting! But will you always be limited to only three choices for the together cards? What If I don't want to select any of the available options, or want a specific action that isn't displayed?
Brooke H
2024-06-28 15:09:41 +0000 UTCThanks for the reply! Does that mean your characters can't autonomously make and develop relationships?
Ryn
2024-06-28 15:08:28 +0000 UTCI'm really excited for the together cards. Though in the trailer it showed one where you develop a crush, is that just a chance that can happen or is there certain things that have to happen?
Carelle
2024-06-28 15:07:26 +0000 UTCThank you! We are not planning on having Paras autonomously choose together cards for now. If your different household characters are in different conversations, you will be able to select together cards for every conversation but you can also just leave them be and they will keep talking even if no cards are selected
Alex Massé
2024-06-28 15:00:42 +0000 UTCWe will be tweaking the amount of time it takes to develop relationships since we don't want it to be too easy and we want it to be more difficult sometimes like when you have less things in common with a character!
Alex Massé
2024-06-28 14:58:33 +0000 UTCOmg I wish making friends in adulthood is this easy!! How lovely it is for us to see the progress of the game! Happy weekend!
Andie
2024-06-28 14:58:09 +0000 UTCReally interesting seeing how the system developed! I'm curious about how the system will work with free will and story progression. If you are actively controlling one para, can other inactive household members start their own interactions and choose Together Cards autonomously? Or is the Together Card system only available for the current active para?
Ryn
2024-06-28 14:49:39 +0000 UTCI like the system since i saw it, but i think your first idea with the conversations also has too much potential. Maybe it's because i'm most of a RPG gamer that i like that. The card system it's nice, also easier for you and it has its own potential. I'm wondering if there will be an option to has more cards than usual for developing a relationship. Sometimes it could feel easy, but I think it's more rewarding if you feel that it takes a lot of time if your parafolk and the other one don't have too much things in common, so you need to wisely choose cards for devoloping the relationship. I don't know if i explain myself correctly, but i hate too feel that it's too easy to make friends and everykind of relationship in games like this, i think your system can help this a lot. Thanks for the post :)

2024-06-28 14:46:24 +0000 UTCThis looks fantastic and I love that the cards have success rates. Reminds me of Disco Elysium's diceroll system and makes for such fun gameplay. Also stoked to see that the cards can be modded! Can't wait to see what scenarios the community comes up with 🤓

2024-06-28 14:40:03 +0000 UTCLove the card system. I feel it is much better than the chat bubbles previously. It is such a good idea to let people play and watch them to learn what needs to be tweaked! So smart! I can't wait to be able to finally get this game and play!! Great work being done so far guys!
Megan Runels
2024-06-28 14:34:57 +0000 UTCMultiple conversations can happen at the same time if your household characters are in different group at a given time. But a character can only be in one group of Parafolks at a time. It's easy to leave a group and join another though

2024-06-28 14:21:51 +0000 UTCI was worried about this issue as well! Maybe depending on which card is clicked, it could take a differing amount of time for another card option to pop up! like maybe "tell a joke" could last for a couple minutes, before the icon where cards are available pops up again!
Yuka Saki
2024-06-28 14:20:41 +0000 UTCI think it will be released in mid or late 2025. and I completely agree with that. I can't wait to play Paralives either, but please give the team as much time as they need. I would rather get a good and working game than a buggy game that was released way too quickly (we already have that) 🤗🤗🤗❤️
Josephin01
2024-06-28 14:19:32 +0000 UTCI really like the card system. I think nuance in the life sim space that makes Paralifes stand. How would it work with households of multiple Paras? Would you only be able to control one conversation at a time?
Kara Painter
2024-06-28 14:19:14 +0000 UTCThanks ladyteruki, glad you like the post and that you are looking forward to creating your own Together Cards!

Alex Massé
2024-06-28 14:15:03 +0000 UTCI am glad that the chat bubble type of conversation was abandoned. It would get stale really quickly, and implementing AI would just make it worse. The text cards are so much better, and I love how they sometimes have percentages for success!

2024-06-28 14:14:28 +0000 UTC"we will have a table with two computers there where people will be able to test an alpha version of the build mode" O_o I am so jealous but alas, I live on the wrong side of that ocean. Thank you Jérémie for this detailed post, probably one of the most in-depth in a while. It's very interesting, even in 2024, to learn about the process of how Paralives is designed ; we think we know because we've been following the Paratreon for a while, but oftentimes we don't know all of it ! To me it was definitely a great choice to step away from the "chat" version. First of all, it's absolutely too boring to read ; but most importantly it's devoid of consequences. The Together Cards outline very nicely what kind of interaction the Paras are having, and what is gained from each option (although so far we haven't seen a lot of negative outcomes, but I'm sure it'll come in due time). "Like most of the content in the game, modding support is built-in and you’ll be able to create your own cards as well, if you’re inclined" Very, I am very much inclined !!! You better believe I studied that last screenshot for five solid minutes XD It's something I'm really looking forward to, because while I can't for the life of me mod objects or clothes, I can and love to write. It's really great to be able to influence what Paras will be able to say (and the outcomes of these conversations) with our own Together Cards and I really look forward to that. Actually if we could have a future Patreon post describing all the ways we'll be able to create content for the game, as a recap, I'd also enjoy that a lot ! Once unlocked, it's really a fantastic way to answer questions (I have sometimes referred people to your replies to one of my past comments where you had mentioned we would be able to add our own Together Cards, since it's under an unlocked post, but that's not the same as an actual post).

2024-06-28 14:13:53 +0000 UTCThis is interesting. Quick Question: We're halfway through 2024, so 2025 is around the corner. Are you guys gonna have a more clear release date as soon as it gets to the new year? I'm just too excited for it!

2024-06-28 14:12:10 +0000 UTCI don't really know what to write about this because I'm completely unfamiliar with this sort of thing, but I think it all sounds really good. I also like that you have changed your mind and will use less text to communicate. For the same reason that was already mentioned (it wouldn't have been a life simulation, but rather a book with no options to change a story 😅). Thank you for putting so much love into it and adjusting systems that might not quite fit. 🤗❤️

2024-06-28 14:10:57 +0000 UTCThanks for the good feedback! I do agree that it could be interesting to play with the 1 hour delay so it's something that we might look into!

2024-06-28 14:09:01 +0000 UTCI love that we'll be able to create our own cards. Would it be possible to set up little scenarios...say like a scavenger hunt game where cards can pop up when a para is near a hidden object? That could be fun for players to share.

2024-06-28 14:07:28 +0000 UTCI love the idea of the toguether cards! I feel that the cards are a good way of abstracting and gamefying conversation. They make it fun in a game-like sense! I also like that there's the toguether bar to give a time restriction in between cards, so that the player can't progress relationships unrealistically quickly. I do think that having the time between each choice to be squarely one hour regardless of the card chosen can be a bit weird, though. If I choose "tell joke" or something similar, I don't think it would be realistic for that joke to be the main topic of conversation for a whole hour. I'd have to play the game and test it to confirm if it feels balanced or not though. In any case, congrats on the progress, it looks really good guys!

2024-06-28 14:01:53 +0000 UTCThe card system looks so much more fun than heaps of sub-menus to look through!

2024-06-28 13:59:18 +0000 UTCI’m glad yall went with the cards rather than the conversation. Feels more natural and less repetitive and robotic. Overall love it!
