🧱 New Wall Tool Grid + New Build Mode Catalog Interface

Hello everybody, happy Friday! Jérémie here - after a short hiatus due to a medical leave - back to showcase what I’ve been working on over the last few weeks, notably The Grid and Build Mode Catalog UI Improvements.

Because we will have internal playtests starting soon, we needed to give a big push on missing Build Mode features and make tweaks here and there where we knew people might have some issues. Here are some of these new features and tweaks!

The Grid

We love our gridless build tools, and we’ve been using them for years now. This new grid feature is an addition that just gives more choices to the players and allows more precision while building. We want the whole Build Mode experience to be enjoyable whether you use the grid option or not, and everything will work no matter how your house is built.

By default, the grid will be aligned with the road closest to your lot, so you can build something that follows the street!

 Building a house with the grid can be faster if you just want some basic shapes, curved walls work with it too!

We also want the grid to be flexible and allow for even more possibilities when trying to build that dream home! If you build something in grid-less mode, you can change the grid to fit with any wall of your house, thus allowing you to build everything else using the orientation of that wal! You can also adjust its size if you want!

 If you hold shift on your keyboard, you can make the grid smaller while using it, so you can have more precision if needed

 Tweaking the grid mid-build to support different angles and sizes of grid cells


This is just the beginning of our grid adventures! We’ll be tweaking the look, fixing some bugs, but I’m already a big fan!


Build Mode User Interface Improvements

We’ve also rehauled how the Build Mode looks, going from an interface with a lot of text, spread across the screen and very small icons to something more visually pleasing, compact and easier to navigate!

I do wish those sound effects was optional, and I am not a fan of the jumping the walls do or the smoke, I find all of that unnecessary and annoying. I don't like it in The Sims either, I find the sudden loud sounds distracting and a bit jarring at times. Like when playing TS4 for instance, not just when building, but in live mode when some silly music plays or a sound plays because something not even related to my household has happened or when the cat or dog becomes scared or whatever of an object! I am big fan of having lots of options, meaning being able to turn each of them off if I want to or on if I like it!

I would love to see more of the baby/toddler/child life stages, the objects and hobbies and interactions they have. Will Paras be able to have multiples in one pregnancy? Will we be able to influence gender?

Ok so maybe not the question that everyone has but I work in IT so I am curious about your project management and team culture! Do you guys have snacks in the office? Do you do daily scrums? Do you talk a lot on video or have fun emojis in the company slack? Just something to think about sharing so we can learn more about your work life while you make the game of everyone's dreams.

I'd love to know if windows and mirrors will still be resizable? I don't expect doors to be able to be - pathfinding issues and stuff - but yeah. I really love the whole doodly chalky look of the UI as a whole - it's really easy on the eyes and fits well with the style of the game! Not a build mode question but a paramaker question - will you be able to set a para as like in between two life stages? This could be complicated though, so I don't expect it. Very cool game so far

these updates are amazing, congrats! i'd personally love to see a "longer gif" - doesn't need to be a fancy edited video at all, basically just a five minute screen capture - of someone starting a lot, opening the build menu, going through some build options, put down a room.. so we can see the full screen and what it currently looks like when building. the highlighting of specific features and ten second clips are great, but i'm missing a sense of what i'd actually be doing as a player when trying to start building a house

I notice the lot retains a half-tile grass space between it and the road. Can anything be done so that the Parafolk do not have to walk over grass between the end of their front path and the sidewalk or road?

Like many people here, I'm curious about aging. It could be a fun post to follow a Para from conception (to also learn about pregnancy, because we haven't heard anything about how it'll work either) till they die. This could also include some family gameplay like how will raising children work etc. Also we haven't seen any mean interactions, so a brawl between siblings could be a fun way to show some violence in Paralives as well

According to previous post and the roadmap, pets will be worked on after the initial early access release. But they did already show off an updated art style concept for the doggy once so maybe we’ll get more sneak peeks!

I agree the seperate grids on one lot are very useful, if you wanna have more than one building on a lot (like a house and a garden shed, or multiple buildings that make up a community lot) and also modern houses that sometimes have floors that are „stacked“ at different angles altogether

Love reading through other people's longer feedback posts. It'd be awesome to see a post or two on design philosophy, more modding tools, or the tough and easy choices of the cutting room floor as you suggested. I know another indie game devblog that adds a glossary at the end to make game design posts with more technical terms more accessible. With that in mind, something focusing on how things are made rather than how they will play is very appealing.

AMAZING! I can't wait to play around with the dynamic grids! I hope the build mode symbols will have hover text to say what each category is! Interpreting symbols can be really difficult for a lot of people including myself, and hover text would keep it neat while also being more accessible.

Hey Jérémie, welcome back. I'm glad you were able to take time to heal properly, and hope that you're feeling your best now :) The fact that the grid can be rotated (and only follows the road by default, but can be changed as seen on the last gif) is magnificent. It's particularly interesting if you have a building with two different levels that don't follow the same grid (for orientation and/or scale), as it really fosters creativity. It's not so much a constraint as it is an actual tool ! I was of the mindset that gridless building would be awesome (although I did hear people complain about fearing it), but I might actually enable the grid for some stuff. It's nice to have options. Paralives so far has been the game that wants to provide options, and that's really a key appeal of the game at the moment. The redesign of the build/buy catalog is nice too. "We’ll be also tweaking the items’ thumbnail style, size and more as things go along." Will we able able to scale the UI ? Some games allow for it and I think it's easier than trying to find the size that literally fits all. The colors are something that immediately appealed to me in this redesign, too (although I don't know how colorblind people feel about it), as colorcoding is really a thing that helps me more than icons in the long run, personally ; I click on "green", not on "plants", you know what I mean ? And the color palette is delightful. I'd even go so far as to recolor the horizontal dark blue bar according to what category/subcategory we're in, but that's just me. "What Would You Like to See in Future Patreon Posts?" Of course, gameplay is always a big interest of mine, and "big" features reveals are always a great time. But I understand that there might not be new things to tell us about all the time. It's been a while since last time one of the Paradevs made a "one week in the life", and with the playtests coming up (or even DURING !), it could be interesting to have another version of that :) I'm not always interested in a list of new assets (they're cool, don't get me wrong, it just doesn't get my engine running as much as gameplay features). I'd also love some dev updates on more abstract things. Like, how game design decisions are made, what is the guiding philosophy behind the game, etc. I imagine that focusing on making things ready for the playtests means working on bits and pieces here and there, that are harder to turn into a long post, so I feel like, every once in a while (not in all posts of course !), talking about the game and/or its development in a more theoretical way could tie things together. Maybe talking about things that WON'T be in the game ? It's usually as interesting as the things that get made, because it says something about what the game wants to be, and the very intentional decisions behind it. Choices is super interesting in game development, I don't know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ As someone who's interested in modding for the game, but more on the writing side, maybe a post about that. I remember you replied to one of my past comments that we could write our own Together Cards. How would that work ? What else can we write into the game ? How do Paradevs intend to foster creativity that is not asset-based (writing contests ?), and how, on the other hand, "bad" content will be avoided in such things ? And also of course, I'm hoping for some kind of feedback on how the internal playtests go. Like I've said in a previous comments, it doesn't have to be the detailed data that Paradevs will get from it, but at least some bullet points about how people who are not primarily part of the dev team (and maybe not even devs at all) will feel about the game would be very interesting to me. [...oh my God, sorry, that's a long comment !]

I adore the new build mode icons. So cute! Im beyond impressed with what you did with something as simple as a grid as well. Just the grid/no grid option would have been great for me, I never even stopped to think about things like changing grid orientation etc. You guys keep popping off 👀🙏

Great improvements! I would love more posts about social interactions and animations, which are core gameplay for my experience. I know they are also probably challenging to create, so other posts about any new features that polish player experience with building, buying, creating Paras or overall using menus are definitely welcome! I would love to know if a placed build can be moved or if the initial location is permanent unless the build items are deleted and you start from scratch. New objects are always nice too. All updates are good! 😀 Edit: another user mentioned genetics, and I agree! Things that make Paras and their stories unique always excite.

So question as someone who the grid sometimes give me a headache...maybe have it count the grid so I could do a 3x5 room without having to squint counting the grid? I would like to see relationships like breaking up between lovers or friends. Maybe another build video since so much has changed since the chalet build.

The grid looks super useful! Have you guys considered a drop-down/up/whichever way arrow for a slider to pick the grid size (maybe in increments of 0.1) instead of only being able to toggle between two sizes? And to answer your question, I would like to see more of how NPCs interact with the world. Would we see them only going to work/school, coming home, then doing nothing until they get a prompt from our household on a public lot or will we be able to see our neighbors go to the park on their day off or go on a date with their high school sweetheart or move and just exist outside of our decisions?

The main thing I'm curious about at this point is how the build mode handles different elevations. How does the player toggle between the ground and second story? What does it look like when a Para has to ascend through a ceiling? How are basements built? What does it look like building on uneven terrain such as a house embedded in a hill with a daylight basement?

I'm probably in the minority here but I would love to be able to choose between the "textual" and "visual" interface. I don't know if this will be possible though (your post makes this sound as this has already been decided), so perhaps at least a text that appears when the mouse hovers over the icon would be useful.

The new interface looks great! I'd like to see something on family gameplay. We've seen a glimpse of young Paras some time ago, but nothing really beyond that. I'd like to see how parents interact with their children (babies/toddlers/children/teens), how can the kids misbehave, how can parents discipline them, how do kids interact with each other, babies and toddler gameplay. What can they get up to? How do parents care for them? Perhaps you haven't shown us much in this area because it's not finished yet? That's okay. I'd love to see anything on gameplay. We've seen a lot about building, and furnishing and food etc, but less about general gameplay (particularly families).

One thing that I would love to see is like, object sets for example a set that has chairs and tables in a similar style that you see were made to fit together could have the same set name or like, a made up company name, so instead of eclectic duck side table, it could be the "(insert brand name or set name here) Duckie Side Table", and if there was a duck themed couch it would be called the "(insert brand name or set name here) Duckie Sofa". Definitely not a necessary addition by any means I think the current naming style is plenty good enough, I just find it nice when in game items reference back to the game's world! Also I guess would make it easier when you're searching for a set of furniture items, like if you were trying to build an office and you want the bookshelf that matches with the table and chair, searching the name of the set the items are from would bring up the whole office set!

I usually love to create persons and houses more than the life mode in itself (I hope that will change with Paralives!! :D), so I'm a sucker for any new hairstyles, or furniture of different trends, etc. Maybe a sow of the different age stages? The size of the grid by default is at 1m x 1m (but it can be changed through mods), and it's useful for curved walls because it's much easier to make perfect circles now!

Aw hell yeah!! I love the idea of a grid that can be added when needed, especially with the alignment with the street and the toggable size of the grid!! That's a really cool feature that will come in handy alot I think and it's also great for people who are less adventurous builders. Truly the best of both worlds! With the icons I think it would be amazing if there would be Text if you hover over the icon a little with the mouse maybe? I love icons personally, but I think having this would make it easier for some folks :) Anyways I am super excited where this is going and generally very very excited for the build mode. I'm a huge fan of the building aspect specifically so anytime there's a build mode update i get happy :D I'm excited for the rest as well though! Great work

Are the number of squares (big or small) standardized across lots? And how well would a grid help with circular buildings? Loving the new UI. Very straight forward and shows more or less what you'll find in that tab quite well, all while fitting the overall style of the game.

The grid tool looks amazing! 😍 I like the new interface look! The only thing I’m not sure about is the colors. Not sure what I would prefer instead, maybe something more minimal? Though it is already quite minimal so I'm not sure. I'm not very good with colors haha. The way it looks now gives me kind of “toy” vibes if that makes any sense 🙈 But it might also grow on me! For Patreon post ideas, I would love to see more builds of various styles, and more videos of creating a Para! Maybe a timelapse of making a new townie or something, so we can see the whole process of shaping and styling your para just sped up!
