Censored Effect: Giving our Parafolks Some Privacy!

In Paralives, you manage and watch your characters living their lives. And just like in real life, sometimes, Parafolks will have private moments and they would be shy if you could see them naked or partly naked. Today’s post is about the censored effect in Paralives, a rectangle overlay that we created to display on top of Parafolks to give them some privacy! This post is for Patrons only so please don’t share it :)
When a Para takes a shower or maybe when they choose to sleep naked, we need to hide private parts of their body:
Showcasing the censored effect on Marvin in his birthday suit. Note that the animated GIFs in this post might not play for you if you are using the mobile Patreon app.
Using the toilet is also a moment where a Para might require some privacy, even if they are not fully naked. We hadn’t shown these toilet interactions yet so it’s a good moment to reveal them!
Maggie uses the toilet and the censored effect appears. The toilet seat doesn’t animate yet! It will open in the future when we will work on object animations. We don’t make the pants go down because that would be really challenging technically and also, the censored effect hides most of what is going on under.
Sebastian uses the toilet and the censored effect appears.
Bonus bug: Cool people flush the toilet like this.
Right now, the censored effect is a pixelated effect which is common in games and media. However, we are still unsure if we will keep it that way or choose a different visual style. Our modding tools support changing the visuals in many ways and here are some styles that we have tried so far:

We thought of other effects like soap bubbles hiding private body parts when taking a shower but we wanted a way that would work in any situation to avoid having to create too many different effects for many situations.
One more thing: I tried to add the censoring effect to the photo mode of the game. It could allow players to create funny scenes or make some people anonymous on pictures.
I played with different effects in photo mode! The stickers and effects are not final. Modders and players will also be able to add their own.
In conclusion, this censored effect will be frequently used in live mode so I’m glad I was able to make it work even if it was a bit trickier than I thought on the technical side! I’m sure some of you are curious and are wondering what will happen if a modder decides to remove the censored effect! Parafolks are like dolls so they don’t really have much to hide under their clothes anyway!

2022-08-01 17:09:29 +0000 UTCI've been thinking about it, and I think that since the arms are moving, regarding the pants and toilet use, that since the area will be obscured anyways, it really doesn't matter that the pants aren't coming down. For people upset about it, perhaps a scribble would be better, although I personally would prefer the blur (just a smaller square/circle so it only covers the area).

Just big enough to cover what needs to be covered, but not necessarily so much bigger than that? It seems now that the squares covers almost around one third of the body. Perhaps that isn't necessary? Just some thoughts. It will be great no matter what, I am sure!

Though I also feel like it would be nice to skip the need for a mod and let folks switch to doll/no censor mode if they wanted to? It's not exactly "realistic", but I can see how some folks might find it less distracting. Unless it's a rating issue, in which case could there maybe be a dev-released mod/patch for folks who want it? Definitely seconding the "let folks choose their censoring" at least, that would still go a long way if folks don't get on with one particular style/find it takes away from the gameplay.

Otherwise they could risk the game getting an mature rating and already limiting access for their target audience.

2022-07-30 07:48:31 +0000 UTCThe thing is that we all have breasts, and considering that the character model is not gendered, I find it weird to have to untick a "have breasts" box on a Para to not have a reminder of that inequality of treatment between genders. I have breasts and they aren't more sexual than a man's. Yes, it's good that we're getting a simple modding tool. I'm just a bit disappointed that an indie game with forward thinking still falls into that. I would prefer an option on the Paramaker of each Para to tick or untick for "blur upper body when naked", regardless of gender.

Then, if they are long pants, they would still show outside the pixelated effect, but not be apparent in the pixels. Just for pants - for dresses it wouldn't matter as they are still covering when sitting on the toilet. Is this feasible?

I understand that can be considered intrusive but I personally would prefer something to be found that matches the art style, rather than big ugly pixels that stretch (might I add) a very big area around the Parafolk and distort, potentially, more than just one person. Sidenote : only in the life simulation community is "toilet interactions" a reveal ! XD

Not that anything is wrong with human anatomy, but far as games go, if there isn't anything to hide then hiding it seems to have an adverse effect.

And about taking pants down while sitting on a toilet; one Sims 4 mod has this function in some way - the pants disappear once the sim sits on toilet and shows back after they stand up. I think that maybe this could be considered.

Suggestion for pixelation would be randomized motion animated use of pixels rather than static and, also have a slider to choose size . The big circle seems way to large at present

Is that a ratings thing or just easier technically? And since Marvin's chest isn't censored, would that also not happen with female paras (considering Charlie is base) or would it be different for female paras due to double standards for ratings?
