Artist's Workshop - Brighton Hamlet and White Bastion
Added 2021-05-19 04:59:41 +0000 UTCI've been wanting to keep you updated on the work I have made with the artists. So I decided to make a continuation of the previous Artist's Workshop post and make a series of blogs with this tag.
In the previous post, I stated the ethos we used when creating art for the materials produced here, and I introduced you to Rubén, showing you the behind-the-scene of the layout art and illustrations he has made for some quest fronts. In this post, I will introduce you to the new artist, Fernando Gallarday, and some more work he and Rubén have been making for the Quest Fronts magazine, namely The Brighton Hamlet and the White Bastion fronts.
Side note: Fernando is an excellent, excellent artist. He's a professional engraver from Perú who can adapt to almost any style, as you can see in his portfolio. You can know more about him here.
In order to not overload the blogs, I will show only a selection of work-in-progress images. These ones and the rest will be uploaded into a Google Drive folder and I will give access to it to patrons of the Lorekeeper tier. You will also find there some discarded artworks and sketches.
BRIGHTON HAMLET
This will be the first quest front in the first issue of the magazine, so we gave importance to it by showing it in the landscape. The challenge was to make something narratively cohesive that would fill these negative spaces.

Originally, the concept was to make a camp of deserters in the foreground that would fully cover the left page, and the Brighton hamlet in the distance, located in the space of the right page. However, that was not feasible because the dimensions provided by perspective and distance would not be so distinguished.
It was Rubén who come up with the idea of change perspective with this sketch.

Fernando took the idea and elaborated on it. You can see a video on his Instagram of him drawing the deserters.

WHITE BASTION - THE CULT OF BONES
The White Bastion settlement is ruled by the Cult of Bones, a religious group led by an elderly woman. The instructions provided to Rubén were to present the members of this cult. The theme: bones.

The second art was simpler: an entrance to the Hotter's Cave. The instructions provided to Fernando were to convey the idea of danger, and a troll in the threshold.

We wanted that skull to be the exact same one used in the layout, made by Rubén.

The third art of the White Bastion quest front is very important because it is intended to be the one that closes the magazine. The concept is to show the White Bastion in the frozen hell that is the northern region. Fernando was the one in charge of this image.

There's way, way more work-in-progress images and discarded concepts for these quest fronts, but I don't want to overwhelm these post with pictures, so I've uploaded them all in the Google Drive folder.
In the next Working with the Artists blog post, I'll show you the work-in-progress art for the following:
- Quest Front - A Somber Coronation
- Quest Front - Unresting Dreams
- Quest Front - Daín's Mount
- Quest Front - Issue #1 (Cover)
