DM is actually pretty dark. People do die and there are some gruesome scenes. It's not like they all get resurrected. You get the mix of dungeon crawling tropes too but in the light of food it does have a comic feel sometimes, but it is actually a serious story with deep lore. The cooking and eating are a vehicle for the show not the star.
