Long comment incoming… I love Annette’s dynamic with Lena, it’s so interesting. I haven’t really seen anything like it before (most stories don’t bother to give even half as much nuance to individual perspectives like this, even outside of anime). It’s obvious Annette always agreed with Lena’s opinion about the 86, but the way she copes is literally by just refusing to believe there is any possible way to help, and Lena is a direct challenge to that. She harbors an immense sense of shame due to her behavior as a child, which has resulted in her constantly looking for ways to reinforce the notion that nothing can be done. Meaning that anything that suggests she COULD have done better is extremely anxiety inducing. She was wrong, she doesn’t actually hate Lena, but she hates what Lena represents to her. Very complicated relationship (shown in a very short amount of time btw), and another example of the writer being quite bold all things considered. Personally, I think the reason Annette kept hanging out with Lena is because she wanted to believe there was a chance deep down, but the more time passed the less likely it seemed, which is what led her to finally push her away this episode.

2024-02-13 23:12:13 +0000 UTCTo answer your question about what other countries think, I think it was briefly mentioned that San Magnolia has been unable to contact any other country ever since the Legion went out of control. Those butterflies are EM jammers, the Legion took out all satellites early on, and they have air superiority. The ParaRAID also isn't useful because it was tech developed after the start of the war, which presumably the other countries don't have. All San Magnolia can figure is that the other countries also came under Legion attack, but unknown if they're still fighting or have lost. So, similarly, any other countries would have no way of knowing if San Magnolia is even around anymore, let alone the pathetic way they're pursuing this war.
