Anyway, wow I forgot how much of a perv Hiruzen also was. I didn't remember him saying that to young Jiraiya at all xD And yeah, Orochimaru and Tsunade were really something to be able to actually get the bells from Hiruzen. And if you pause and go frame-by-frame at 18:36, you can see Kisame running by after Sasuke runs by. At first I'd just thought that it was Sasuke running by again. And that editing was so good how they made it look like Sasuke was knocking on Naruto's door. I knew it wasn't Sasuke this time, but I forgot how convincing they made it. And damn that last scene IS menacing and intense, even if he ends up acting a lot more passively in the next episode than his stare here made it seem. It's just... his eyes. They're so... piercing... Another thing I like about Itachi is he and Koyomi Araragi (from the Monogatari series, my favorite anime) are the two characters I can cosplay as with no effort. If I keep the back of my hair long, I can style it like Itachi, and if I cut it shorter, I can style it like Koyomi. Even got an Akatsuki cloak if I feel like going out and being menacing for the day. (I never do though, and I've never been close to any conventions...)

In the manga version of this scene, when Itachi and Kisame talk about "going toe-to-toe" and "if we faced each other, both of us would be killed", they were talking about Naruto based on solely on the fact that he had the Nine-Tails inside of him. They only bring up Jiraiya after that, saying "HIS guard is one of the Sannin", so you know by the wording used that the subject they were talking about was Naruto. They didn't know how strong he'd gotten. I mean, if you look at when Jiraiya actually showed up, Kisame was all for fighting him, which would be strange after him saying "I'm pretty sure you (Itachi) could go toe-to-toe with him, but I'm not sure I could". Kisame didn't seem to express that sentiment when he was actually in front of Jiraiya. On top of that, Itachi said "If we faced each other, we'd both be killed." So whether he's talking about Naruto or Jiraiya, Itachi's saying that in a 1v1 fight between him and them, they'd both kill each other. But then he said "Even if there were more of us, the result would remain the same." No matter WHO Itachi is talking about, this line doesn't make sense. We KNOW that this "more of us" is the rest of the Akatsuki. If Itachi and Jiraiya are so close in power that they would both kill each other, there's no way that adding the other 8 members of the Akatsuki would still result in a tie. "Jiraiya = Itachi" can't also = "Jiraiya = Itachi + Kisame + Deidara + Sasori + the rest of Akatsuki combined". This makes especially less sense when we take Orochimaru into account. Orochimaru and Jiraiya are on about the same level, and by Orochimaru's own admission Itachi alone is stronger than him. So if we take all these statements and showings literally, we have "Itachi > Orochimaru" and "Jiraiya = Orochimaru", but also somehow "Jiraiya = Itachi" and even more bizarrely "Jiraiya = Itachi + the ENTIRE Akatsuki". The math simply doesn't check out, especially when, after Jiraiya shows up, Kisame displays a VERY different opinion of Jiraiya, and even Itachi doesn't disagree when Kisame suggests that a retreat wasn't necessary for Itachi. In fact, compared to Deidara going after Gaara (which I know you've seen so far), Itachi's "attempt" to get Naruto was very passive. Back when I first saw this, I thought that it was weird and believed he may have had a more sinister motive behind coming to the village (or if not more sinister, at least an additional or different reason). He didn't seem that into grabbing Naruto at the time. He was a lot less confrontational than Kisame or Deidara was. It didn't look like Jiraiya was the one who chased them away at all, and even in these scenes did neither the anime nor manga say that Jiraiya was the reason they left. I'm getting a bit ahead of myself here because that actual encounter isn't until next episode anyway, but like I said, this was a big debate for the longest time that I was actively a part of. I like Jiraiya and all, but nothing he did against them nor up until this point showed any promise of doing any better against Itachi than anyone else had been shown doing. Next episode I'll point out another detail I noticed that shows that the fight would've been over if Itachi had wanted it to be. But at the same time, people who are fans of Itachi can tend to severely downplay Jiraiya as well because he's really goofy. His dance/introduction in front of Naruto didn't help make anyone take him more seriously xD He really likes to show off. He's so much like Naruto. And here I was really feeling bad for Sasuke. He didn't quite have the gifts that Naruto had, and it made him feel inferior. Had it not been for the massacre of his clan, I don't think he'd have cared. But he was hell bent on getting stronger, so seeing a "loser" like Naruto getting so strong so fast really hurt and made him feel worthless. It's rough. But it LOOKED like he did 4 Chidori bursts in his training here, or at least 3. And without his Cursed Seal too. So... that's improvement! And I can't EXACTLY fault Sakura for not believing that it was Naruto who saved her and not Sasuke, given the impression Naruto had made on her compared to Sasuke. But at least Sasuke had no problem in telling her the truth.
