First off, I gotta say Shikamaru always cracks me up, even if unintentionally. When he said "I preferred him when he was in a coma" I laughed out loud. I forgot he said that xD But now, Gaara... Personally I don't think Naruto would've ended up like Gaara even if he didn't have Iruka and the others. For one thing, Naruto and Gaara still don't have the same personality at their cores, but also Gaara had to put up with much harsher abuse. Naruto was teased and shunned (at least by the adults), but Gaara... he was constantly that assassination target of his own father. They're both very similar, with Naruto harboring the Kyuubi inside him and Gaara harboring the Ichibi, but what Gaara went through personally was to a much higher degree of messed up, so it REALLY messed his mind up. At the worst, Naruto would've had a much more bitter attitude, or he might've been strong enough to overcome the mistreatment himself, but I don't see him ever becoming a killer. Also, when I saw Gaara's full backstory (and especially seeing a full AMV of it to the song "My Immortal"), it made me cry :(
