017 - Rising Through Grains

In this tutorial we'll talk through filling a scene with grains (without blowing up your computer). We'll simulate them using Vellum. In the final section we'll talk about instancing workflows with rs proxies to make the scene manageable and fast to render.

Make sure when you object merge it in you try different "transform" options on the object merge. There is "Into specific object", "into this object" and "none." This changes the way it is imported and sometimes can cause a mismatch in position.

Hi, Paul! Love the tutorial! I am having few hiccups with the system. If I bring in the bottle animation, it doesn't match the one I setup in the sim, I tried to reset the pivot etc. Thanks!

I mention it in the tutorial, I think? But, this totally works, except for the viewport, it's incredibly slow and nearly impossible to move around in becaues it's trying to display the full geometry. I think if you pack the geometry and show as a single point then it'd work just as well.

Paul Esteves

what if on copy to point you do pack geo and of the obj level before rendering you tick Instance SOP level packed Primitives? Is this method still slower and has more memory consumption than RS Proxy ?

Hello Paul, I've encountered an issue where my textured object in Cinema 4D with Redshift loses its textures when imported into Houdini. Could you create a tutorial on how to successfully transfer C4D objects with Redshift textures into Houdini?

Not really to be honest. The latest redshift is supposed to have fixed this, but I haven't found this to be the case. There is also the option to lower the amount of vram redshift can use (in the advanced tab). Supposedly this helps. I keep forgetting to try this. I end up always just restarting houdini to fix it.

Paul Esteves

Hey Paul You mentioned your redshift was having a Vram leak and not going as fast as it usually does. I think I'm having similar problems. Do you have a fest fix or a solution for this?

Hey Oscar, thanks for the heads up. I am aware of it.. At the moment the options to stop it are not great. Option 1 is Vimeo, which is a terrible platform and the only way I could use it is to buy a pro account, which I'm then locked into forever if I want to keep my videos on there. Option 2 is to host them directly on Patreon, but currently they have a 720p resolution limit, so, that's off the table. So, I rely on people's good will and understanding that pirating my tutorials will just end in me having to close patreon because I can't maintain it :'( I hope it doesn't come to that. :)

This is exactly the kind of stuff I want to learn! Very practical and flexible setups I know I will use for projects, thanks a lot Paul! On a sidenote, I noticed that you can press "Watch on Youtube" and be directed to an unlisted video on youtube, and if you copy paste the URL on that video you could send that to anyone and watch it without being logged in or anything. Maybe it was just a bug, but if not it would be pretty easy to pirate your videos, just a heads up!
