C4D ui and plugins (QUICKTIP)

A lot of people ask me about my custom UI and what these buttons are + what plugins I use, so here is a quick-ish one about it :)
And here are the UIs I use in c4d 2024:
https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/ixsfcv6t1ncquo4g7pe4n/h?rlkey=st6m0qnr0ultc10u53v0otpzy&dl=0

I will slightly modify them for 2025 and update this post. Have a great weekend ahead!

Cheers!

Yes unfortunately as one version i run into a nasty UI bug that was shutting c4d down and I prefer spending 1 hour in every version and start clean (render presets included) rather than issues later. RS also caused problems with ready presets, octane same, so its kinda unfortunate necessity.

Do you set up your UI every year after Cinema 4D releases a new version? It’s quite tedious, isn’t it?

Simone Nucci

word! I dont wanna waste time in anything other than being laser focus on work/ideation. This is also part of how to increase your dayrate, how to double book and still have a life. A lot of people underestimate "presets" and automation. Then again there are people that have OCD with that and get into "analysis-paralysis" mode and do nothing haha

This was a great topic to cover! i have a lot of similar settings and i think its because of my years in 3ds max :D there are a lot of default c4d ui elements that made sense for me back in r17 when i started but i really wanted to marry the "best of" 3ds maxes shortcuts to c4d and i came up with a lot of similar things :) Learning shortcuts or setting up custom UIs is a huge thing for me. i'm always filled with rage when people don't care to learn a faster way to work. Fisrt of all you can work a lot faster, but most importantly when i have an idea i want c4d to feel like i was using a pen and paper for sketching. I want the program to feel like i can get the concepts in my head into the program as fast as its possible. If i have to click 15 places by the time i create something the idea is already gone, contaminated or it morphed into a different thing. Knowing the tools and the fastest way to put it on paper or "sketch" out ideas is one of the most important things imho

Thank you sir, great ones. I may add here that in some occasions they layouts from previous versions cause crashes and instability. Same as render settings. So my advice is, if you feel that c4d misbehaves more than usual in new versions, remake the layout and render settings. Its a bummer, but I always do it myself since i run into some very weird issues from time to time and since then I have nothing to worry about.

Thanks for all tips! My additional tips I find usefull with working in C4D: 1. With new C4D sim system (2023+) - if you have two or more GPUs, set simulation calculations (in project settings) to GPU which is not connected to your monitor/monitors (=less overloaded). It makes heavier simulations start faster while loading to GPU. 2. Set a good, tailored to your needs, default scene file with: - few different render settings aspects ratios (like 1:1, 16:9,4:5...) and main parent setting to control them, - render outputs and passes in relative paths token system (ex. /"project folder"/renders/...), - layers , - obejcts/folders (CAM LIGHTS ENV GEO...) - Viewport HUD/Project settings you use (FPS, display mode). - You can also save some specific render engine settings in default file (for example Octane default settings - PathTracer with 1000samples as default and so on, alpha chanel on, bla bla...) Everytime you open C4D you have it. It saves a TON of time in the long run. 3. Most of UI layout and settings you want to migrate to other versions can be stored in *.l4d (Cinema Pallete) + default scene file. Keep backup file of UI layout and default scene file somewhere else than C4D folders so in case of reinstall or wiped c4d user folders you can comeback to your custom ui fast without rebuilding it.

thanks !! will try :)

Layers is also useful when rendering out via takes as you can hide objects in the scene

Yann Verbeke

Also set those on 1-2-3-4 πŸ‘Œ Got a A4 Wacom tablet in its box for the past two years, guess it’s time to give it a try

Yann Verbeke

I have custom shortcuts yes, i use 1,2,3,4 Ha, I mean its the same thing tablet or mouse. But in the long run, tablet just helps you with wrist. It saved me honestly i was about to go for surgery

Thanos Kagkalos

you are welcome :)

Thanos Kagkalos

By the way, isn't it strange there are no shortcuts to switch between Model / Polygon / Edge / Point ? Did you make your custom shortcuts for those ? And lastly, besides your wrist been broken by too much gaming, do you recommend using a tablet to work better/faster in C4D? (my wrist is starting to ache :-) )

Yann Verbeke

This is amazing! I learned so much and it's about time I use those shortcuts and buttons way more. I looked into MagicSolo and discovered NitroSolo. This tool is amazing as it solos of course, but also centers to world origin and if your element is rotated, it will bring it back straight which is so handy to continue modeling it. Merci!

Yann Verbeke

Got you, thanks!!

they also locked the good capsules behind Maxon One subscription :( but yea geometry axis, segment, backdrop, select facing are some of the great ones for me

Thanos Kagkalos

Hmm, yes performance might be an issue. But there are some really useful and simple things that I guess a lot of users are not aware of. Like axis transform or segment (I was still using Helix for creating a line before I watched your tuts :-)), or some capsule tools made by RocketLasso are also very cool, and so on. I don't know many of all this stuff.

Frame Ant

Takes I do not use. I dont remember if there are layers specific video somewhere, but its very simple: u place the objects/materials u want into a layer and then u can disable/enable the layer. This helps declutter the viewport and work faster on heavy scenes + see ur animation real time. Provided that, u have layers for your objects. Under every post there is a metatag which if u can press it, u can see other posts with the same one. Also while this needs an update https://motion-punk.com/patreon its a good way to browse through the amount of videos in this channel. I hope that helps! cheers

Thanos Kagkalos

Im just for few months here, lots of videos, probably i didn`t saw the previous one :) is there anything about takes and more detailed video about layers?

Overinch.Creative

thanks!

Thanos Kagkalos

Thank you very much! Amazing stuff!

Yevhen Bilenko

Thanks! Dont sweat about it though as capsules suck in both performance and other stuff many times. Almost nothing in c4d scene nodes makes sense, they need to either delete the whole thing or rewrite it from ground up

Thanos Kagkalos

done it in the past but yea needs update from time to time, cheers!

Thanos Kagkalos

cheers!

Thanos Kagkalos

Yeah, VERY COOL! Thank you so much! πŸ˜„ All my questions are answered, hehe. And I realized, I really have to dive much more into these scene node/capsules things. I also find it confusing sometimes, they are so seperated - almost hidden - from all the other object stuff.

Frame Ant

Great! Thanks

Niclas Bergman

Finally, thanks :)
