ACES and Octane part2 (VIDEO TUTORIAL)

Wrapped up part 2 about compositing within AE.
I hope they wont change things in the future cause took me a while to figure out a simple workflow and did many many tests.

One thing it never made it to the video cause i had some issues was EXR compression. Supposedly we can change the compression inside octane and have much smaller files. Now that 2020.2.4 is out, I m gonna do some more tests out of curiosity.

Not sure about process in fusion/resolve/nuke sorry I only do AE :)

I hope you find this small series useful cause it can really elevate your rendering game.

Cheers!

hey bud, when u say wrong? I dont have issues with z pass it works normally here

Thanos Kagkalos

hey man, one issue that I've been having for a long time with aces workflow is the z-depth pass, for animation, when I render everything in aces and do the conversion in AE, the z-pass is always wrong(either fully white or full black), but it looks ok in the live viewer of octane. I was wondering if there is a solution to that?!

Kousha Motamedi

aces works only in exr and only as shown in the video. 8 bit is a format that takes no further adjustments

Thanos Kagkalos

I have a question. When you render an 8 bit jpeg in Picture viewer, the colors look same as in live viewer. But when we see it in aftereffects, the colors are different. So, in that case, can we get the colors to look correct using the 2 adjustment layers with OCIO and Color profile converter on this 8 bit jpeg image as well (like the exr workflow)? of course you can not do anything about exposure, but can the colors be retrieved?

Hi Thanu. This is so amazing! Never knew you could have a night shot from a Day shot! Super cool tips! Thanks!

Nikhil Shahapurkar

Its 2 ways, either EXR and u do everything in post or jpeg (never png, too heavy no reason, same 8bit info) and no post :)

Thanos Kagkalos

Love this ACES tutorials. I have some beginners question. What is a work flow with animations? You render out all frames as EXR aswell or as PNGs and if as PNGs how you can make this composting adjusments?

Vladimír Salač

Heya when images for final i export jpeg sequences. But I figured out that overall mp4s from After codecs are doing a much better job than native h264, especially when particles!

Thanos Kagkalos

How do you export your graded images from AE? I just tried DNX and PNG, both gave me not to complete same result as in AE. DNX has a massive color shift while PNG looks a bit washed out. Edit: H264 MP4 works flawlessly.

Stefan Pausch

haha true! Yea whatever is rendering related its on 15$ tier

Thanos Kagkalos

Dude, you need to promote your different tiers better... I just found out about the second tier via your comment on Silverwings ACES video. So here I am, joining the Octane party. :D

Stefan Pausch

Loved this explanation! Definitely gives me good perspective on ACES and enjoyed your humour explaining it!

Michał Hubert
