Yes! My immediate feeling when they emerged from the train and everything was overly bright and sunny was dread. And when I saw the missing fence... It is very ambiguous ending.

I am actually very surprised that you have not, understandably, entertained the sad thought that the ending is not a good one! When i first watched this movie i felt like i new how this would end the second they showed the mudslide. To me the fact that it was storming when Minatos mother and Teacher Hori arrived, but it was the most sunniest of days when the boys got out of the bus/train cart and the blinding light.. and then to top it off the whole talk about rebirth and dying the whole movie + the gate that suddenly disappeared that blocked their path... Now i can tell you though that the director apparently said that they intended for the boys to live, but apparently they also wanted to make it very ambiguous, so parents watching this would actually feel the worry that it could be too late (now i am not sure how credible these are) now i do have one of my weird "fun facts" again: Ryuichi Sakamoto is actually one of the biggest inspirations of BTS's Yoongi (Suga) - they actually met the year before he died and worked on a song together, and it is his piano playing featured in the song (Snooze) "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence" till this day is one my most listened to piano pieces, and the movie might interest you too, as it is quite queer and features Ryuichi Sakamoto as Capt. Yonoi
