Typing this as I watch You have not met crazy sports fans until you've seen German football (soccer) matches. I'm not even a fan but things can really get heated. Queer rights in 2013 Germany: Pretty decent from what I remember. There were anti-discrimination laws in place. No gay marriage until 2017 but you could get a "eingetragene Lebenspartnerschaft" which was almost the same thing legally speaking, except when it came to children. General societal acceptance generally varies by region/social sphere so this is very much anecdotal, but I remember several openly gay couples who were legally partners under that law in the 2000s in my small hometown. But, as you can see in this movie, homophobia was (and is still) alive and well, especially in more typically masculine spaces. Mid-point: He didn't just call it a "one-off" as the subtitles suggest. He called it a slip-up. (There are a couple of subtitles I'm not satisfied with in this movie, but this is one I felt you had to know about) The gay joke in the showers in the original German: "Where does a gay eagle fly to?" - "To his Horst" (Horst is both the word for an eagle's nest and a male first name) Both queer resources and queer filmmaking in 2013 are topics I can't speak on. I was 12 back then and didn't engage much with queer culture, let alone figure out I wasn't straight until I was... 15? 16? Something like that. And yes, the "training" at the beginning and end of the movie was a periodic thing. In German, there's "Ausbildung", aka an apprenticeship/training to be qualified for a job, and there's "Fortbildung", which you can do to advance in your field/get specific qualifications. Marc was doing the latter. This film has been on my "to watch" list for ages, so thanks for giving me an excuse to finally do that! I think I read the ending of the film a little more positively than you. I'm not great at expressing my thoughts on it but I feel like while Marc is still in the same place, still separated from the pack, he has also advanced - he knows himself, and he's moving forward on his path. It's ambiguous for sure, but I like to think he's getting more and more comfortable with himself and his sexual identity - whichever that is.

Danke! Thanks for the reaction. I thought the sequel was funded, but that was 2019…. so [shrug]? Me: [watches Max Riemelt in Freier Fall reaction] Okay, if I -have- to watch Sense8 (B reaction) again… sigh. Work, work, work. 😀

Blue/green eyes r a typical German feature just like blond or brown hair. I have almost 100% German ancestry and my whole family including me have blue/green eyes and blond/brown hair! Obviously not all people here look like this tho lol Btw Kay’s last name "Engel" means Angel in english. It’s not an uncommon name but I thought it was an interesting choice for his character + the homophobic guy Marc is friends with, Frank Richter, his last name means Judge. Kinda funny choice
