Big Eden (2000)

Pt. 1: Vidyard, Wetransfer

Pt. 2: Vidyard, WeTransfer

*The actress who plays Mary (Veanne Cox) is from the 90s Cinderella. Now you can yell at the screen every time I try to remember. <3

I also want to mention, I adore Louise Fletcher in this. She was known for playing villains - most famously Nurse Ratched, but personally I knew her most as Kai Winn from Deep Space Nine. This movie convinced me what an amazing actress she was that she could play those roles and then be this amazing, lovely character in Big Eden. Also, my fave line of your react was about not talking to people over 60, lol. They were dropping heavy truth bombs for sure.

Finally watched your react today, and I'm so happy you enjoyed it! It is one of my all time faves and I am right there with your bewilderment that this one isn't more talked about. Also, your reactions to the scenery. The location was definitely a Main Character, lol. I kinda want to visit there some day.

This movie is a special one, so happy you got to see it, and I got to remember why I loved it, I saw it a few years after it came out, I see Shelter and Beautiful Thing on sweepstakes so you HAVE to see them if you haven’t, they are required viewing, both ahead of their time. Thanks

Post-watch: I’m so glad you finally got to watch Big Eden! I’ve been watching queer media since the late 1980’s and films like this were very few and far between for a looooong time. Big Eden will remain one of my favs.

Ok. I have now found my new fave autumn movie. And it's queer and covers a lot of my fave tropes. Could not be more happier <333

Thank you for reacting to this film. I am also old enough to remember when it first came out, but I had forgotten how funny and poignant it was. It has such a hopeful tone, which is quite different to a lot of queer media produced at the turn of the millennium. I laughed at the 'I have one job' comment, but to be fair, so few people seem to know about this film. It is a totally underappreciated gem.

I am so so glad you loved this movie. It’s just so sweet and kind but emotionally impactful as well. I love how subtle it is too. Pike is the softest character but soft doesn’t mean straightforward and the way we slowly get to know him throughout the film is one of my favorite things about it. I knew the moment with Sampa was gonna get you cause it gets me every single time I watch it. I especially loved how it was shown that Sam and Pike were friends and how comfortable Pike was around him. Even though Sam and Henry never had that direct I’m gay conversation, you know Sam approved of Pike and thought he and Henry would be good together, and I like to think that gave Henry comfort after Sam was gone. The detail of how the store and the cabin models fit together just emphasized this. I loved your summation of how this film was turning the homophobic small town trope on its head but still a very queer experience because Henry’s journey to accepting himself is a very queer one. The way Jim and the boys and Widow Thayer just want things to be nice for Pike 😭 The way they don’t pressure him to define himself overtly and instead just support him on his journey 😭 Another fav moment of mine is how the widow just rolls with learning Henry is gay and just organizes a get together of men without blinking an eye. So good. Also I love love love the old school country soundtrack - when A Thousand Miles from Nowhere starts playing with that shot of driving thru the mountains it just tells you exactly where this is and it doesn’t need to say a word. The fact that it was filmed entirely on location around Glacier National Park gives it so much authenticity too. And lastly, the fact that all of the characters are normal looking people, not wearing obvious make up, not models. Pike and Henry and Dean are just like, mid 30s, maybe 40 year old men who are trying to live their lives. The costuming felt so authentic and timeless as well and really added to that overall normal small town feel. I grew up in a small town in Michigan near the big lake (Lake Superior) and so much of this film felt like home; I think that’s another reason I relate to and love it so much. This got very rambly lol but I guess I’ll end by saying thank you for a wonderful reaction and I have no idea what to put in for the sweepstakes now 😂

This is one of my favorite movies, I'm so glad you finally got to see it. Also, your reaction to the "Did I teach you shame?" scene. Man I felt that. It's exactly how I felt first time around 😭

I remember watching this when it was new, yes, I'm that old. I was a big fan of Arye Gross since The Experts and Ellen even Hexed. Pike on here is the best. His store boys and the widow all trying to help him get Henry is just perfect. With her severe face I was worried when the widow started to try and set him up with the women. But then after finding out he was gay by the women, she went around and found all the gay men she could, I just loved her. Even though she couldn't cook. She just wanted to be a matchmaker.

Yay! 🥳 🩷
