AFTER/MATH

Hello Patrons. Here's a treat in progress. For years, John Tynes, Shane Ivey and myself have been noodling over the following: what would a game set during Lovecraft's End Times look like? When Delta Green had finally lost. What would the world look like?

The standard vision is Deep Ones crawling through Times Square and Cthulhu squatting on Madison Square Garden, but, as usual, we didn't think it would look like that at all. Such a concept is foolish, because such beings measure epochs like we measure minutes. Even if Cthulhu stirred in 2029, it might not even begin its ascent for 100 years after that, or a thousand. Still, its mind would affect the world during this time.

There would be a vast amount of human time where the world fell into madness first...That's what this game is about.

I began writing a background for it years and years ago. It supposed the following: what if, one day, people just started going mad, more and more, until the social order collapsed. Near the end of that collapse, those few that remained sane began to see evidence physical reality itself was no longer stable. Even math and science seemed to shift and change without apparent cause, randomly.

Those few sane Survivors struggle to find safety in a world filled with Revellers — human madness taken to baroque and complex levels never seen before.

It is a game of resource management, risk, and unnatural horror. It's The Road made by A24. Not too long ago, I began to put together the mechanical system for the game. You'll note it is somewhat unforgiving (this is on purpose).

What's here: the core mechanics and loop for the game.

What I plan to add in the future:  deep mechanics for psychological horror, a Hexcrawl survivor game of travel, scrounging, and dealing with the mysteries behind the End as well as the madness of the Revellers, with the general goal of staying alive and finding your way to safety.
