BIGBANG Reactions

A few days ago we had a fun stream revolving around BIGBANG. Below is all the information shared with me before every reaction.

BIGBANG STREAM

By Mirvale, Emu, Justim/jb_epml and Powdersz

History

Bigbang debuted with a hip hop concept in 2006 with their song “la la la”. They consisted of 5 members named G-Dragon (Leader, Main Rapper, Vocalist, Face of the Group), T.O.P. (Lead Rapper, Vocalist, Visual), Daesung (Lead Vocalist), Taeyang (Main Vocalist, Main Dancer) and Seungri (Lead Dancer, Vocalist, Maknae). Seungri is currently not a member of the group anymore.

****the guy that you liked the flow of, is TOP and he started as an underground rapper!

Influence and achievements

Why is bigbang looked up to by practically the whole kpop industry even until today?

As a YG group, Bigbang were not popular right from the start. In fact, at this time YG was a really small company and bigbang were struggling to get by and were almost doomed to not succeed. Big 3 did not exist like it does today yet. Over time, Bigbang grew in popularity gradually until they became kpop’s biggest boygroup where they stayed for a long while. They worked their way up, and they are seen as inspiring for that reason. Bigbang actually MADE YG what it is today.

G-Dragon is the first kpop idol to write and produce by himself. This was very unique in kpop at the time. Because Gdragon wrote their songs with the other members also writing here and there, Bigbang were not seen as an idol group but as real artists instead.

Bigbang were the ones to introduce the first ever official lightstick, the crown/flower! Bang Bong (designed by Gdragon to differentiate VIPs from other fandoms)

- A short bit about hit song LIES (that you reacted to)

“Lies” topped Korean music charts for seven consecutive weeks, a feat only achieved by Seo Taiji and Boys prior to them. It was “Song of the Month” of August and September 2007. Beginning of electronic movement in K-Pop. Start of production of extended plays in K-Pop.

In 2012, Big Bang embarked on their first world tour, The Alive galaxy tour which marked the first time for the group to tour North America, Europe, and South America. In total, 800,000 people attended the tour worldwide. They were one of the first groups to do this.

In China, Bigbang is so popular that to this day, they are still the #1 kpop group there. People say that their fan presence in China is “like a wall”. They are with many and they are STRONG. When “Still Life” came out last year, they sold over 1 Million copies in their first day in China alone, becoming the fastest-selling digital single in China this decade. Still Life is also the first-ever single to sell 1 million copies after the "No More Mass Buying Rule" in China. It achieved this milestone in 30 minutes.

-MTV EMA award 2011

A few of their big awards

At their peak, they won 5 daesangs in one year.

As group:

G-Dragon:

Taeyang:

Bigbang’s biggest tour of all time was the Made World Tour. It is also one of the biggest Kpop tours of all time. This was their 2nd worldwide concert. The tour began in April 2015 and finished in March 2016. The tour visited an astonishing 15 countries, including China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Mexico, and the United States, just to name a few. In total, the tour was attended by over 1.5 million fans. They did 66 shows which is still a record for the most shows by a Kpop group during a tour.

Even in 2022 they are still going strong, even though they had a 6 year hiatus in between, topping charts with “Still life”.

Bigbang’s iconic discography!

You have already heard some of their iconic songs like “Fantastic Baby” and “Bang Bang Bang” and the song that made them successful in Korea called “Lies”. But, they have many iconic songs besides that. Especially their MAMA live performances can not be left out.

Last farewell

“Last Farewell” topped Korean music charts for eight consecutive weeks, knocking themselves off from the previous record they had set with “Lies”. “Song of the Month” of December 2007. Its also one of bigbang’s most memed songs by VIP with the iconic intro. Every time they are back, VIPS start posting this song.

Haru haru

“Haru Haru” topped Korean music charts for six consecutive weeks. “Song of the Month” of August 2008. It is one of their most well known earlier hits. Billboard hailed the track an "experiential masterpiece"[1] and named it the group's second best song. It is written and produced by Gdragon.

Blue

“Blue” topped all Korean music charts as soon as its release. Two million views on YouTube in less than 24 hours, the fastest record set for a K-Pop music video on YouTube at that time. “Song of the Month” of February 2012. It’s a slower song with calming sound and breathy vocals.

Cafe

This is known as a fan-favorite b-side and it also shows their versatility. Gdragon produced this song and together with TOP he wrote the lyrics.

Bae Bae

"Bae Bae" is a trap-infected hip-hop/R&B song, in style of country music that was noted for its "boundary-pushing elements" and sexual references which were unheard of at the time in kpop. There was a lot of fuss around the music video, but in a slightly good/funny way too.

Loser

This song is a mid tempo r&b song with lyrics that talk about self doubt and self hatred. A lot of people could relate to this song, and it also shows that bigbang dont think of themselves as “all that”. They show real vulnerability here, one of their sides that is praised a lot.

Member SOLOS

Every bigbang member released solos from pretty early in their career. We’ve picked the most iconic songs of each of them. Enjoy!

Gdragon - untitled 2014

Untitled 2014 was the title track of his 2017 album “kwon jiyong”. It's a slow song, that shows G-Dragon’s soft side. Written and produced by himself.

TOP - Doom dada LIVE

You have already reacted to his song Doom dada in the april fools stream last year, but this is TOP’s most iconic song. His live performances of this song might be just as strange, or a bit unsettling rather. TOP is known for loving art and creativity, he also likes to make memes of himself on instagram and fools around the most compared to the rest of the group. So, you know what to expect.

Taeyang - Eyes nose lips

Eyes nose lips, now one of 2014’s most memorable South Korean ballads, is a song that captivated the hearts of people all over Korea. Taeyang wrote the song himself and it’s about missing someone that you broke up with. But no matter how hard you try, you can not forget their face. At the time, he revealed  “I had this girl that I loved, but it didn’t really work out. It really hurt after we broke up and I was longing for her, especially the image of her.”

The big twist to this is, that the person that he wrote this sad love ballad about….is now his wife who he has a son with. Her name is Min Hyorin and she is an actress and model, who met Taeyang on his own music video set for “1AM”.

Fun fact: It stands at #1 in karaoke as the most sung song.

BIGBANG Reactions

Comments

Without the context of the many conversations in both previous streams and discord involving BB, I see how you might assume that we are "gatekeeping" the issue or "silencing" the victims but that is not true. We have discussed it many times at great length as a community in discord where in-depth discussions are much easier to have. It has never been downplayed and avoided. Everytime we have had requests for Cnblue, Beast/Highlight, and Ftisland (who all had members that were involved) we discuss the issue again. And the community as a whole made a decision for this stream to focus on only the music for this music reaction. Jim was given music to react to which is what he did. The Burning Sun scandal is a complicated issue that would need a dedicated stream to truly understand the events and issues to a level that the victims deserve. I personally don't believe in avoiding hard topics so I hope vvips will continue to submit the music they like and continue discussing sensitive topic in discord. You are welcome to join us.

Kitsune

The acoustic version of Haru Haru that they do live is a fave. Better than the original imho.

Honestly it’s really hard for me to watch Big Bang group content. I normally watch Jim’s videos, but I couldn’t do this one either. I don’t think every member is bad, but between Seungri and the Burning Sun scandal and Daesung and his sketchy AF building that he somehow didn’t know had floors of illegal sexual activity going on in - it always feels kind of dirty(?) to watch them now. Like there’s enough questions there to give me pause. It’s fine if people want to introduce others to their music (they’ve had a huge impact to Kpop and it’s impossible to get into it without eventually knowing who Big Bang is - if you didn’t already), but mods should at least accept that, that also means people might talk about (big) issues that have surrounded members. For someone to be able to voice their displeasure or their concerns/skepticism regarding this group and what their attitude/mindset towards women might actually be….to gatekeep that feels messed up to me. I’ve seen a lot of that lately though, along with fans still supporting Seungri, so I’m not surprised. I think that’s just something to expect now when it comes to new people checking out Big Bang. It’s usually the three D’s. The fans either downplay, defend, or deny everything because they want people to like the group, but they don’t have to do those things at all if they don’t allow comments about it to begin with. Who knows, maybe the mods are just trying to keep peace by not allowing it to even be brought up? I don’t agree with it in this case, but either way, there’s always gonna be 1 of the 2, so my advice would be to skip the BB group reactions going forward and just tune into Jim’s other lives that he does. (If you hadn’t already come that conclusion yourself). That’s what I do.

I think they realized that if I knew about it, my opinions would have changed (they did), or the viewers may have derailed me somehow. 99% of the time, I'm focused on the music and reading the lyrics. I'm assuming something must have happened when I reacted to BIGBANG in a previous stream. Anyway, sorry to let you down with this one. I'll work harder to vet streams moving forward.

I was watching this live and, personally, had to turn off. Which I have never done before for a Jim reaction. I feel like the team let him & us down on this one. Maybe they are big bang fans, and that’s fine. But having a note saying “if you talk about the burning sun issue, you’ll get timed out and then banned”……???? As if an issue affecting females shouldn’t be talked about amongst a mostly female base? I felt let down. Like a fcking ton. I like some of their songs, but it felt a disservice to Jim to not let him know the absolute crap that one of these people was involved in. It felt like protecting a child, which Jim is not. Of course, you don’t want the entire comment section to be on that subject. But…….sheesh. We are a majority female fanbase who were silenced in this. VERY disappointed in the team. Which I’m so sad to say. Seeing someone who was involved in horrid things towards women simply be praised? Felt gross af. And I don’t believe, as a GROWN ASS MAN, Jim needed protection from that. Just a disappointing time all around.
